Small, friendly, with wonderful food.
We’ve been here a few times during lunch service on a Sunday & their lunches are outstanding. Despite being small this restaurant doesn’t feel like you are on top of each other. My advice is to book well in advance as it’s extremely popular. If they have space for walk ins they’ll accommodate.
Price wise it’s very reasonable.
Wine list is good. They often have details of daily food on Instagram. 5* service too.
Great tasting food, well presented and great service. I had the venison for a main and it was well sized and very tasty, following the pheasant balls as a delicious but light starter. The chocolate and beetroot brownie was equally good! Highly recommend this place!
This is becoming our must visit restaurant when staying with family in Newcastle. Close to the West Jesmond metro station, this small, friendly bistro in a residential area is exceptionally good.
Every dish we've chosen has been delicious and we'll try each other's dishes as we enthuse about the flavours & quality of the food. It specialises in venison, locally sourced, but the menu is suitably varied and great wine/drink list.
The service is excellent and price reasonable. Our recent visit was about £200 for the four of us for three courses & drinks.
Booking is recommended as it is a small, popular restaurant, owned by the chef, I believe.
Incredible food and beer courteous service. Lots of game on offer.
A hidden gem...
Those venison bon bons are put of this world! All the food we had was beautiful and the service was great. Such a lovely cosy little bistro with lots of charm. Hats off to Max the chef as the food not only tasted amazing but was beautifully presented. We will definitely be back next month to sample more of the menu.
Lovely, small, intimate restaurant with relaxed and friendly staff. The chef hunts their own game and sure knows how to cook it. Great value for delicious and creative food. Have been twice and will keep coming back regularly!
This place is one of a kind offering game and foraged vegetables. The food is outstanding. Their game kebab is amazing and we keep coming back for more. Try their venison, pidgeon or grouse. The menu changes according to availability. Could not recommend any higher.
The food here is really great, been here a couple of times and all of us were very pleased with the whole meal. The lunch menu is a little limited and the prices are fairly high, but you wouldn't expect such consistently great cuisine to be served in this small and fairly hidden restaurant.
Excellent food, impressive in its care for details. They even had a knife with an antler handle that came with the venison. Great wine selection and super friendly service. It's a hidden gem.
A perfect night for our anniversary. The food was fabulous, a great bottle of wine. The staff were attentive without being in your face. See you again soon. xx
Excellent food, the mussels and venison bon bons were amazing. The pork belly and the venison mains were better. Really nice staff, great service all night! Will definitely be back. Also made a massive effort to make a birthday special. Thank you!
Had a lovely Sunday lunch here today. Venison Bon Bons to start which were very nice followed by Roast Beef for the main which was gorgeous and the portions were big too which is great! The service was great, the staff were very friendly and attentive 👍
Really, if you love game and foraged food, this should be 4 1/2* . . . near enough 90%.
Anyone living close to this good and good value neighbourhood restaurant should consider themselves blessed.
I suggest you make the most of it while you can as I'm sure that the gifted chef and hunter-gatherer, Max, will be looking to spread his wings in a much larger and more prestigious environment in the not too distant future.
I was sufficiently impressed with my selection from the carte on the Tuesday (10/09/19) . . . a terrine of hare and ham hock followed by excellently timed, tender, rare venison fillet with fine accompaniments followed by a small (3) but good selection of cheese . . . that I returned my perfectly adequate house Rioja, bought an excellent DB Languedoc (no details because, unfortunately, it was the last bottle and can no longer be re-stocked) which could be kept for my remaining 2 nights in Newcastle as I booked them after my first mouthful of venison! I was lucky enough to be offered a menu dégustation on the Wednesday night (Not normally offered but it was an unusually quiet night) which provided an eclectic and outstanding selection of fish, offal, game and fungi. I added a tasty Montagny to my Languedoc. These also accompanied my final meal: a lambs' sweetbreads starter followed by a tasty corn fed chicken and then the cheeses again. Thank you all at Bistro 46!
Great food at reasonable prices, certainly the place to go if you like game as often has various cuts of venison on the special board.
A must try starter is the venison bon bon with puffed pork, it is a fantastic dish.
Great food and drinks. Excellent service and friendly staff. Good atmosphere. Would highly recommend booking in advance as has limited seating available.
Would recommend this place to anyone. Really nice food. Well cooked and nicely presented .Excellent service nice atmosphere . Will be taking friends and family back for more soon.
One of the better fine dining restaurants in Newcastle, thus place is a hidden gem with all the trimmings, I had the wild northumbrian pigeon for starters and venison for the main, well presented and cooked to perfection and they have a very good wine selection worth every penny, would highly recommend this place.
Amazing servixe amd food. staff were very attentive with regards to allergies with our table. Would definitely recommend a visit its a little treasure.
Great food. Good wine. Good service. Good value. Do those things right... what else do you need? Great place
