UPDATED REVIEW:
Further to our review last year (as below) another fantastic visit.
We really love this Wetherspoons.. in a great town. Plenty of seating within, to the rear and also at the front.
Lovely staff.
Food once again.. perfect.. Afternoon small Fish & Chips.. Spot on.
One can not complain about this place.
We can not wait to return to Newbury and The Hatchet Inn.
.......
Previous Review: A fabulous Wetherspoons in a great location.
Staff very friendly, very clean and tidy all round. This is an old building so stairs and parts of the upstairs sometimes feels crooked (no it wasn't the alcohol).
This Wetherspoons is also a hotel..
We have previously stayed and must say a brilliant location to visit the market town of Newbury and beautiful canal.
Enjoyed a lovely Korma, it was a Thursday and who can say no to a 'Curry Club'.
Overall... thoroughly recommend
Lovely bar. Nice staff. Large garden area. Awesome food. In a great location - we did a wonderful walk around the town and a long way beside the beautiful canal.
The only downside was we had room 103. This should clearly have a single bed in it - the room is way too tiny to have a double bed in it. Hopefully they will take note of this comment. I would definitely go back, but would have to stipulate not room 103!!
The Hatchet Inn is located Market Place in Newbury. I’ve had a beer in a couple pubs near to The Hatchet before but never been in. In Newbury today I thought hmm I fancy a pint I’ll give it a go. Why have I not been in here before.. When you enter what strikes me is how large this pub is inside. It’s big. It’s also … cosy and welcoming. All the usual drink suspects and guest ales! Fireside was on tap today and I recommend that. And it’s a Wetherspoon so prices are very competitive read ‘not overpriced and reasonable’. A few fruit machines scattered about if that’s your thing. Decor good. Staff friendly and attentive. This will now be my go to in Newbury. Recommended.
One of the nicest spoons I have ever been in.
Staff keep the place clean and tidy, food is lovely and actually hot (which is rare for spoons I find).
Food came out quickly, staff were very pleasant.
Lovely breakfast, great value for money highly recommended
When will I learn to check when booking a wetherspoons hotel. No lift. No disabled access to the upstairs. Stairs narrow and quite steep. Room 105. Small double. OK for one night. No parking on site but plenty in and around the pub.
The Hatchet is typical of the Tim Martin Wetherspoons offer. Great prices, particularly the beer, unfortunately this tasted a bit sour, like it had been in the pipes too long. Food was great, served quickly, a nice tasty meal also at a good price. Staff were lovely too ...But why are these places losing popularity? Martins desperately Brexity vibe, now it's failed, maybe?
We stopped here on route to our holiday for a lovely full English breakfast. The large breakfast more than met our needs, and the staff were very accommodating in letting me change the eggs for something else.
Family had lunch in the Hatchet couple days ago while visiting friends in Newbury. Really nice pub, friendly service, child friendly. Great outdoor area. Recommend!
Nice rooms much better than I expected ,friendly staff and good cheap food
The senior management team have done a splendid job with this one
Good size frontage terrace and a larger rear one. Clean inside with plenty of opportunities for privacy.
I had a Ghost Ship low alcohol due to driving.
I can imagine that this one thrives on most Saturdays especially when the racing is on
Nice place great atmosphere. Food was very good, large portions for the price. I really liked the staff they are super friendly and helpful. Would definitely come here again. If you are visiting or live around the area. check this place out. I believe you will like it.
Visited this place during my trip to Newbury. Good atmosphere and friendly crowd. It's open till midnight or a bit beyond as well. I was disappointed with their tap beer - tasted watery. But the good was great and great value for money.
This was a cheap and cheerful stop over, the room was clean and comfortable- but incredibly small, the view was rather undesirable with a constant waft of food from the air vents.
However, we were happy with that as we didn’t pay much for the room and we’ve stayed in much worse!
It doesn’t have any parking so bear that in mind when booking.
Very friendly staff and good value basic food.
£1.50 unlimited hot drink refills, free wifi and plenty of usb and wall sockets… Comfy seats by big windows, this place is great for working/ reading during the day.
Cheap food and cocktails, it gets wild in the evenings. A diverse place for working from home’ers, families, party goers and hard core drunks, this place is perfect for pretty much everyone.
Quite quiet on a Sunday early evening. Service very quick and polite staff throughout our meal.
Will be coming back.
