It is now more than half a decade since John Campbell decided to leave the Vineyard at Stockcross and the 2 Michelin stars he had won there. He had a short stint helping the Dorchester group launch Coworth Park Hotel, winning a star in the process with his eponymous restaurant. Campbell subsequently parted companies with Coworth Park and heading into the sunset. That was until he was tempted out of his self-imposed retirement to open up the Woodspeen in 2015. Unsurprisingly, with a chef of his immense talent at the helm, the restaurant quickly won a Michelin Star within a year of opening. Although Campbell was very much present when we visited, the day to day cooking is left to his head chef Peter Eaton who worked with him at Coworth Park.
Really beautiful modern interior and really generous portions for both the main and desserts. This Michelin star restaurant does not disappoint and all four of us patrons were thoroughly satisfied with our meals. All three courses were super tasty - I had the artichoke soup to start, the sea bass as my main and the coffee custard tart as my dessert. The wine list is quite extensive which is always helpful and the staff were very professional and friendly. Would definitely give this place another try (if I'm ever back in Newbury).
This is a beautifully designed restaurant in a quiet area just on the edge of Newbury. Ample parking and beautiful views of the valley beneath. Outdoor and indoor seating is available. The food is beautifully prepared and presented, just incredible. The service and relaxed atmosphere is wonderful. We visited for our anniversary and will definitely be returning for our next special occasion.
