This experience was amazing!! I booked this as a surprise for my boyfriends birthday and he was so happy. We booked the casual tea time. The staff are lovely and talk through all teas and snacks in such detail, it’s amazing how they remember so much and are so knowledgable. The atmosphere is very calming and I have never experienced tea quite like it. We left feeling very calm and chilled out and wanting to experience it again! We also bought some chocolate. If you’re thinking of going then you should!! It’s well worth the money and a one-of-a-kind experience. Thank you Cha-ology!! <3
Just ‘wow’. What an amazing experience from the moment you walk in; it’s hard to imagine somewhere so peaceful in the city centre.
Our booking was their ‘quiet’ tea service. The servers took our coats and throughly explained all the options available before seating us at one of the tables.
I can’t believe how good the tea was! I enjoy a lot of teas of different varieties at home, but this stuff blew us both away. Some teas like the hojicha had an almost tropical flavour, other teas were savoury in a way I didn’t know tea could be.
The snacks/food were also excellent, and surprisingly filling! Definitely recommend the sakura mochi!
Our service lasted around 2 hours. The server’s timing was excellent even though my wife and I were having two different menu options. Each tea/dish came with a card with some information and a QR link to further reading. Given the small maximum capacity of the establishment, it felt very intimate and personal. Given all of this, I’d say you definitely get your money’s worth.
I couldn’t leave this review without commenting on some of the negative ones I see here; reading some of them initially left us feeling a little nervous about booking. However, our experience could not have been better, the staff were amazingly friendly and clearly very very passionate about the tea and food they serve. We had no issues taking photos of our food and drinks (following their guidance on photos and phone usage).
If you’re feeling nervous about booking like we were, I’d honestly not worry and just book it. Respect their requests (which they politely remind you of upon booking and upon entry) and just enjoy the vibe.
P.S. When we booked online by their site was down, but they responded to our email literally within minutes to help us book.
Fantastic experience. I found this place by searching Matcha and at first I was a bit hesitated because of the reviews. I saw negative reviews regarding to their strict rules. However, the owner replied to the negative reviews with patient. I can tell how much they care about and how serious they are for the experience and tea they want to provide to us.
So please read their house keeping rules before reserving.
Overall, the experience is 10/10. The staffs are friendly, welcoming, and dedicated. With each course of new and snacks, the staff will explain and tell you the story behind. The way they make tea and explain can truly tell you their expertise in tea. When you get there just sit down, put your phone in silence, and enjoy the whole experience. Definitely will visit here again!
CHA-OLOGY is a fantastic little gem hidden in plain sight in central Manchester.
I have been several times over the years and they never fail to disappoint. The tea, the food and the service are all top notch and the owners clearly pour their heart and soul into the place.
Mai and James lovingly describe the history of the specific teas they have available from information about the cultivator to the growing process through to the preparation method. They also seem to personally know each of the artists who make all of their tea ware and crockery and they normally have a few pieces for sale.
I'm a big fan of the casual tea time where I like to go with my other half for a tranquil break from our busy schedules. The space is extremely welcoming and calm.
I've also been for the quiet tea time and brought a book to read for a cosy few hours of peace and quiet.
I highly recommend anyone experience CHA-OLOGY for themselves it is brilliant through and through.
I was impressed with today's experience at @cha.ology. Everything was made freshly, meticulously, and innovatively. Each tea offered so many new sensory pleasures all set in wonderful, minimalistic space. I've never been a fan of red bean, but this certainly converted me. Thank you to my friend for inviting me, I highly recommend this place if you are a lover of tea and Japanese culture.
I also bought my partner some fresh chocolate truffles so he didn't miss out!
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Cha-ology's quiet tea time in Manchester and I couldn't be more impressed.
From the moment I walked in, I was made to feel welcomed and the staff who went above and beyond to make sure my experience was personalised and peaceful. The tea ceremony highlights their seasonal Hanabiramochi paired with Seiju matcha, and finishing with Matcha and Hojicha Nama Chocolates that were particularly memorable. I appreciated the opportunity to learn about the stories and origins of the food and glassware, which transported me to Japan right in the heart of Manchester.
I highly recommend Cha-ology to anyone looking for a unique and tranquil tea experience.
Wow! 10/10
What a truly fantastic experience!
We went to a quiet tea time experience and it was absolutely fantastic in every way, how often do you get time to relax in this busy world?
From the second we arrived into the tea room we were treated with a lot of courtesy, kindness and respect, and the atmosphere of the tea room was really calm and welcoming.
Before we sat down, we were guided through the menu choices in great detail about the tea, and selected what we fancied if you weren't familiar with any of the teas or options you needn't worry as it was all explained . We had also mentioned on booking we were vegan and were catered for in every way and didn't feel like a bother whatsoever, the staff are fantastic!
We got to choose specific tea ware for our Matcha and were shown to our designated table. The decor was such a brilliant, minimalist touch which instantly added to the meditative feel of the whole experience.
Our teas and paired sweets came out, and again our hosts described in great detail the flavours and origins of the ingredients. All were delicious, and we experienced flavours and quality ingredients that we normally would never get a chance to try.
Once we had finished, our hosts came over and talked about each artist behind the teaware that we chose, explaining about the origins and the type/style of pottery and brought other examples over of their work, really great touch which added a lot to the experience.
We left feeling well and truly spoilt and relaxed, having had a completely different, experience that took you into a little piece of tranquility in the heart of the city centre.
Please don't for a second read the bad reviews, the guys here have something truly special in the heart of Manchester, I'm that impressed we've actually booked to go again.
100% recommend.
Booked for my sister's birthday and had an amazing experience. The tea and food were incredible and the server was extremely knowledgeable. 2 hours of quiet away from the hustle and bustle of Manchester city centre was very welcome. Will be coming back and recommending to friends
I've visited the tea house multiple times for casual tea, Sunday takeaway/collection as well as some of their special tastings. The quality and attention to detail is next level, consistently excellent every time. Easily one of my favourite spots to visit!
The hosts (J&M) work directly with the tea producers, and all of the teaware is carefully selected by them. It's a lovely little gem if you'd like to relax and enjoy delicious Japanese tea and wagashi. The atmosphere of the space perfectly complements the experience.
The website is regularly updated and the owners have always been very helpful in responding to my queries. Similar to other reviews I agree that if you read up on the rules before you go, be respectful, you will certainly have a great time!
Gorgeous, immersive experience we would never have expected to stumble across in central Manchester.
Situated next to a main road, initially we questioned the location of this spot. However, as soon as we stepped inside, the curtains shielded the view of outside, the soundproofing was great, music was playing quietly and we completely forgot we were ever next to a main road in the first place.
The staff were friendly and attentive and talked us through every tea or sweet that we tried, as well as telling us the background story behind the ceramics that we had picked out whilst trying the matcha course. There was so much narrative and care in every little detail of the experience that we really appreciated as the customer.
The teas and sweets themselves were of high quality and offered a range of different flavour profiles; we liked how you could choose between a fixed seasonal menu or pick out your own teas and sweets too.
The whole experience felt so considered and authentic - we highly recommend.
Please ignore all of the negative reviews - if you can’t stay off your phone for 2hrs, then perhaps this experience isn’t for you. The staff were lovely and clearly care about their practice deeply. (We took a quick photo of every course, which the staff took no issue with.)
