Wong Wong’s Bakery may be a humble cafe without comfort or luxury but it has all you need to leave satisfied yet with your wallet still heavy. The interior of this place hasn’t changed since I discovered it around 5 years ago and I find this part of it’s sustained charm. Sat on the corner between Yang Sing Restaurant and Kwok Man Restaurant on Princess Street, you would be forgiven for missing this place, even if you walked right by it.
It’s officially Springtime!!💗
To celebrate this I went down to Chinatown. I’ve been craving Chinese pastries for a long time now and decided to save this trip for a special day.
After some minutes of getting lost lol! I finally looked across the road from the one leading to the entrance gate of Chinatown and spotted Wong Wong bakery!!
Delighted I went up and picked up some of my favourites; Roast pork( Char Siu) Bun, a pack of the mini sponge cake & flower cream bun!!
Honestly when I got home, wished I bought more portions!!Everything tasted perfect; from the fresh and soft buns to the sponge cakes which were milky and the sugar level was just right!!10/10 across the board!
I will definitely be making a trip downtown again this time with more CASH, as it’s a cash only policy.
A perfect way to start this new season of spring 💗💗
P.s: this alongside my favourite bubble tea from Ohayo was a combo made in heaven. Please check out my review on there too!
Absolutely delightful egg tart with a perfectly flaky crust and tasty custard filling - sheer heaven! The peanut butter “pancake” was amazing as well: just the right ratio of crunchy peanut butter filling to mochi-like pastry. Highly recommend this bakery!
A really nice quaint bakery well tucked in Princess street.
Got great cakes , biscuits and pastries.
Contactless/ card payment not allowed not allowed only cash or bank transfer.
Prices are very reasonable and their cakes are to die for.
Overall a brilliant place for a quick snack and carry some bread home to munch on later in the day with some high tea
Good Chinese bakery. The egg custard was flaky, fresh and warm when we visited. We also got some bread. You can also see the chef making and decorating the bakes in the back. Visited whilst visiting Manchester chinatown. We got the chestnut cake and matcha cake.
Handy hint: it's cash only!
I popped in here for a browse and walked out with a Mini Custard Mooncake 🥮
It’s a very interesting bakery: from pineapple bread to char siu-filled buns, there’s definitely at least one thing to pique your curiosity.
Delicious birthday cake made with fruit. So light and fluffy. The sweetness comes from the fresh fruit which balances the cake out really well.
This was my first time trying and will definitely visit and try some other items this bakery sells.
Great place to grab a Hong Kong pastry. We had egg tarts, thousand egg pastry and bubble teas. All tasted great! Egg tarts were even warm and there was a queue the whole time when we were there enjoying our tarts. Popular spot!
Best Chinese bakery in Manchester. I often pop in for a peanut mochi (the boxed ones just don't compare) or a bun. This week I got a birthday cake from there. It is delicious, the fruit is very fresh and the ordering process was quick and clear. The staff are really nice too.
Was in the area and the smell brought me inside. What a large selection of buns and cakes! The only inconvenience is that is cash only so had to go back and get my wallet.
Best Chinese bakery I have ever been to, the staff is super attentive
- mango mochi £1
- mango pancake £2
- pandan coconut bun £2.10
cash only but definitely some of the best chinese baked goods and sweets in the uk! they have such a wide variety and everything is affordable and always fresh😋
Discovered this place recently and have been back multiple times since. I often get the roast pork pineapple bun for a quick lunch as I work nearby. The egg tarts are excellent too. I’ve not tried the cakes yet but they look great and they even do full size cakes for birthdays/special occasions.
Overall incredible food, the most friendly staff, and such great value compared to other places in the area!
Only thing to consider is that it is cash only.
The shop itself is very neat and clean.
All the bun and pastry in the shop are well packed, and the way they pack is hygienic.
We had 4 buns from this bakery shop (don't remember the exact name, try my best to give them the right name!).
- Pork floss bun
They are generous with the pork floss with this bun, not only the surface has pork floss but also inside the bun.
The saltines of the pork floss is perfect (to me). In the middle of the bun, after few bites, there's pork floss mixed with something I think it's mayo (?).
It taste good with the mayo, but it becomes too rich after few bites.
- Honey and pineapple bun, Mexican bun
The reason why I put these 2 together is because they basically have same base of the bun, just the surfaces are different.
For Honey & pineapple bun, it's pretty average, not too bad, not too wow.
For Mexican bun, the surface has combination of saltines & sweetness at same time, not sure what flavor it supposed to taste like, it's pretty average as well.
I wish the flavor of these 2 buns can be more flavorful as they taste kinda similar, just different textures on the surfaces.
- Custard bun
This is my favourite one out of 4 buns we got. As you can see from one of the pictures I uploaded, the custard in the middle isn't that much, but the flavor is really good and tasty! I just wish they could put more custard in the middle!
Tips:
I usually microwave my bun for about 20-30 secs with 80% power (if you don't like your bun cold, you can try it).
I don't do it to all the buns, only some specific flavor (I didn't microwave the pork floss one as it has mayo).
Overall I like this bakery shop and would love to go back to try other items they have.
Down parts of the shop are they only accept cash, and you don't see expired date on the packed buns.
You probably can ask the staff about the expired day, just it's inconvenient when you have long queue behind you are waiting.
Since covid pandemic, we are trying to avoid using(touching) cash, unfortunately like I mention above, this shop is CASH ONLY.
Hong Kong milk tea is good. The bitterness does just make.
The egg tart is well cooked. It is the type of puff pastry and it is freshly baked. The egg custard is good flavour and the texture of the case is crunchy.
The pineapple bun is a bit soft and spongy. It may be due to the content barbecue pork inside. But it is still good and I guess it will be good with a slice of cold butter.
The place is clean and there are seats for you to enjoy the pastries and hot milk tea, just like cha chaan teng.
I went to Wong Wong Bakery today to get cake for my friend’ s birthday. The staff were helpful and she understood what I needed. I also brought some breads for myself. They are big and looks good. The only thing to mentioned would be that the store only accepts cash. they do have bank transfer option anyway so it is not a big con.
Great Chinese bakery: excellent food with clear allergen listings, at a great price (~£3.50 per filled bun)
They only take cash, and have a small space to eat inside (you can also obvs take your buns to go).
Really enjoyed the pork and pineapple bun, and something I've forgetten the name of, but was functionally a tuna-mayo roll inside a nori sheet, with savoury candy floss on the sides (not being sarcy, was genuinely ace!)
Lovely Chinese bakery with very competitive prices
I got a last minute birthday cake for my boyfriend and it tasted amazing! So much better than just grabbing a pre made cake from Tesco or any other brand- I got the fruit and cream cake and it was so fluffy! The fruit was also amazing and fresh and I loved that they put it inside the layers instead of just the top- it was a lovely surprise when you sliced open! I also didn’t know that it was cash only and they were very kind with the customer service and directed me to the nearest ATM, while they packaged the cake for me. Truly made my boyfriends birthday a lot better since he was already having a bad day at work. Definitely coming back here again!
