I used to come here late night when I was young. Get the chicken sweetcorn and cover it in the chilli sauce. Combine that with the mango rubicon.
I've just been back after 13 years and it's still the same! Pizza comes out on the old skool conveyor grill. Boss man there chatting away - taken over the business from his father, keeping the prices low and serving the same great late night pizza. For £4.99, you cant beat it.
It's kind of like Manchesters answer to american style pizza pie before the NQ got dead posh.
And the artwork on the pizza box is so iconic.
Happy memories came flooding back after returning to Popolino's. Respect to the management keeping it to It's authentic roots.

Awesome place with awesome and tasty pizza with friendly staff. Highly recommended.

I was a bit skeptical when I walked in here at 6:30pm as it was almost empty while the other restaurants next door were at least half full, I ordered a seafood pizza and 3 spicy wings, turned out the pizza was quite nice, and the wings are not bad at all.

i can't fault this place. it's great after a night out and opens very late. The food is affordable and arrives quickly. it's a good portion of food and it's exactly what you're looking for on the way home haha.

Used to be my regular back in the year 2000-2002 , when studying in Manchester. If any one knows of loxford tower😮💨🤢-3 minute walk from there!
Doesn't seem to have changed much since.
From the other photos i see on reviews here, it still seems to be as great as ever.
Prices still seem student friendly!
Pizza used to take no more than 5 minutes from placing order. There used to be the conveyor grill, in front, so you see every pizza that comes out of the grill, each looking tantalising, hoping that is yours, especially when you are the hungriest - during busiest hours! After pub.
I think that grill is still rolling out the pizzas after so many years!
Hope to come back one day... Haha.

May be my new favorite pizza spot. Very reasonable prices for very high quality pizza. From the first bite I get a taste that all the ingredients are well sourced. Staff are all really friendly too, always a great purchase.

I LOVE Popolino --- That is what my tee-shirt says! Yeah when I was a student I loved this place so much that I actually bought that Tee-shirt for a quid!
If ever I happen to go on a night out in Oxford road now, I can't help but go have that ridiculously cheese and super amazing spicy chicken and sweet corn pizza for 4 pounds! Btw the staff know me so well that the minute i enter they say it loud -- Spicy chicken and Sweet Corn with extra cheese! (That always brings a smile on my face). Well to be fair I was their regular customer for 2 whole years!
This place is clean, safe and the pizza is delicious! They have so many options of toppings that I am sure everyone will find something they like. Most importantly one big crunchy and cheesy pizza is just for 4 quid (You can easily share that between 2 people).
The other reason for my 5 stars is the memories I have with this place, it always takes me back to those good old uni days! *sigh* I hope to someday have a re-union with my old pals here.
Verdict: I am a fan and will always be one! :)

I was out bar hopping one night with a friend who's a graduate student at the University of Manchester, and at the tail end of our evening, we got hungry and decided to stop in at Popolino for some inexpensive drungry (drunk and hungry) food.
Despite my very low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the pizza tasted, though granted when you're drunk pizza always taste great ;-)
Our pie was made quickly, they used very generous amounts of obviously fresh toppings, and the crust was surprising crisp and flavorful.
Bottom line: While they aren't worth making a special trip for, there's no question the pies here are Worlds better than you'll find in chain pizza joints, and less expensive to boot!

Don't really know why I am writing a review for a place you'd usually only go if you stumbled in there drunk.
I just thought I'd say that a sober experience there is not so bad either. The pizzas are only £4, and even if they are not the most amazing pizzas in the world, they are worth every penny. Plus, if you go before the boozy rush, you'll always get a seat (and by that I mean you'll probably have the whole place to yourself).

I stumbled into this place after a night at Manchester Academy. Popolino's is a fast food pizza type place perched on the Oxford Road near Manchester University.
My friend and I wanted to grab some food before we grabbed a taxi back home. The menu isn't the biggest I've seen, but it had everything I wanted so all was well.
I went for a chicken ceasar wrap with chips. The wrap came in this foil sleeve which was a welcome change to paper wrapping in which the sandwich or kebab disintegrates and gets cold as you take it home.
Popolino's has seating too and is nice and cheap - £3 for a wrap and chips isn't at all bad. A good place to come and grab something in between lectures during the day as well as a late night eatery.

I'd definitely agree with the other reviewers about Popolino's being the best pizza takeaway on pizza takeaway row - the parade of shops between the bars of Grosvenor Street and the Man Met Union. It looks cleaner and nicer than the other restaurants on the inside and out and has always been open on my walk home from a night out in town.
I have a friend who used to go to Popolino's after every single night out, whether or not that meant a half hour trek across town or a couple of bus rides rather than one. He now has a well-paid job in the big smog, but for him no trip to Manchester is complete without a visit to Popolino's. As Rebecca points out, Popolino's sell hoodies, assumedly as they have jumped on the 'we are a student institution and students like hoodies' bandwagon, just like Gaff's in Fallowfield. I'm surprised this trend hasn't caught on with Aleef and Abdul yet, but I suppose there's still time.
I've never actually had a pizza from Popolino's as I tend to stick to some variation on chips for post-night out nosh, and Popolino's chips are good, though much the same as Abdul's chips. Next time I'm trying the pizza.

If I'm drungry (drunk & hungry: you're welcome) I want a lot of something hot and cheap (there's a joke there that a cruder man than I would make). Popolino fulfils all these requirements. One of the better takeaway establishments on Oxford Road, it's cheap, brightly lit, and gives you the energy you need to avoid falling asleep on the bus-ride home. I'd recommend sticking with the pizzas and wraps, for the rest of their range is rather average.

There's a checklist for me when I'm trying out a takeaway after a few beverages.
Is it clean?
Does the food smell nice?
Is it clean?
Are there chips?
Is it... clean?
On takeaway boulevard, part of the student Mecca that is Oxford Road, Popolino with its cute name and its neat and tidy ambience ticks all those boxes. But this isn't just a late night stumbler. It's open during the day so you can enjoy its hot and tasty offerings when you're out and about. The wraps are a huge success, my favourite being the cosy cheese and beans one with sweetcorn, lettuce and tomato - a generous lunch for only £3.
I've yoinked a veggie burger or two from here a couple of times and always been happy with my purchase. There are so many different combinations of pizzas it's mind-boggling, but for us non meat eaters there are tons of different options for every mood, for example there's mushroom and green pepper or mushroom and sweetcorn, each £4 a pop. The specials have a bit more on them but most of those are less than a fiver too, so you can't complain.
Popolino's is also on the 'Eat it Now' website, another version of Just Eat I suppose, so you can order your naughty snacks online and eat them in your pyjamas. My, that sounds tempting after a couple of wines at home with Charlie Brooker on the box. Where's that website...

I love popolinos! They literally have the best pizzas all over Manchester and nothing can change that sentence of mine!
Their pizza's are soft, crisp base, cheesy to no extent, and the toppings are delicious and plenty! The place is a good for staying and having a meal, with huge Lcd screens playing the latest match or anything that you'd like really. Just request them and they're always happy to let you watch something you really want to. The staff is friendly and talkative.
They've recently come out with these great 'I love Popolino' tees for just £1 and hoodies for £15, they're really great, just like the I love London tees only this one's dedicated to a pizza place, which I think is rather cute!
Really really popular with students and they always have great deals on their food, works out very cheap!

Watching football in a nearby pub, hungover, we were dismayed to find that, due to closure because of the Leeds v Man U fixture (apparently there's a rivalry there, I did not know that) earlier in the day. We were ravenous, and Popolino's came to the rescue at half time.
There are a lot of takeaways and fooderies on this parade, but I went to Popolino's for two reasons. Reason one; you can say Popolino in a funny Italian accent. Reason two; they have t-shirts and hoodies saying 'I heart Popolino's', so business must be good. Good business, good food.
Well, the food was OK. As a secret KFC fan, I ordered fried chicken and chips. It was mediocre at best. Once I'd eaten the crispy coating, the chicken was revealed to be dry, and yet somehow slimy. I didn't finish it. The chips were good, but chips are chips, really. The boyf's cheeseburger didn't go down much better. Thin, flat, processed patty in a lacklustre bun, topped with the biggest insult to foodstuffs; processed cheese (or 'plastic cheese' as the brother used to call it).
I won't go so far as to say I won't go again, but next time I'll be trying one of their pizzas. The menu is wide and varied, and cheap. I'll be staying away from their faux KFC, though.

Another addition to the crowds of takeaways in the heart of Manchester Metropolitan's campus is Popolino's pizza. They do decent slices with anything on from vegetarian to meatalicius numbers and even halal specials. The crusts are thick and the cheese is plentiful, students seem to love Popolino's with its selection of big hearty lunches of pizza to the post club munch. The restaurant has a nice feel as you walk into the big granite stone building and the staff are friendly.

perfect place to grab a pizza for students! cheap and filling! working hours are great too!

Cathy is right! They seem like nice blokes too. A Veggie Hot and a portion of fries please.

In contrast with some of the other yelpers here I have not had a positive experience of Popolino's and would say that, if anything, it is the worst of the parade of takeaway pizza establishments along this stretch of road. The pizzas are served on bready bases and although I will admit that they are artfully cheesed (just exactly the right consistency and depth of cheese throughout the entire surface area of the pizza - well done, sirs!) the sauce is very sticky and sweet like mulchy strawberry jam. Their selection of wraps are the far better bet here (with the best, the homely cheese and beans wrap, already having the backing of yelper extraordinaire Emma-Louise) but their chicken wrap is outshone by the spicy tikka wrap at my beloved Babylon just a few doors down. And that's it really, there is some alright stuff on offer here (although for my money it is certainly not the pizza) but why would you bother when Babylon is only a couple of skips along the road.
CathyThompson
pretty decent pizza here
