Superb selection of wines, but can be pricey. Nice outdoor seating in a quiet place near the cathedral.
Good place to stop for a drink both during the day and (unbeknownst to most) of an evening too. Decent selection of wines and some craft ales too.
The owner was friendly and welcoming and even gave us a heads up on some choices at the restaurant we were visiting that evening.
Recommended.
Wine retailer and bar. Sat outside on a gloriously sunny day and had a couple of Estrella. We weren't on the wine that day. Great selection though. My wife wants to call in again to try the wine but it will have to be another sunny day because I couldn't see anywhere to sit inside. Beer selection is very limited but wine selection is vast. Staff are lovely and very helpful. Everyone sat outside seemed to be enjoying their wine and the sun.
I visited to purchase a bottle of wine as a gift. Before this, I hadn't actually realised it was a shop as well, but I am now so impressed that I will make sure to return to buy myself a present! James was extremely knowledgeable on the wines on offer and guided my choice brilliantly while still taking care of those seated outside. Even better, he had his favourites, which showed a genuine love of the wines rather than a generic appreciation.
Excellent wine bar in a great people watching location. Can just sit and relax the day away.
The selection of wines is as to be expected... Strong. It was a sunny day so the outside seating was well utilised. If not particularly comfy and th service was quick and friendly.
Location is interesting considering its proximity to Sinclairs which is known for its value. This is not and the price was a little off-putting for ordering more than 1
Young guy working there is a really positive influence and the reason we returned later in the day. Then we encountered the misserable owner. Enough to make us spend our money elsewhere. Customer skill score? Minus one. Otherwise wine choice is good if maybe 20% over priced. Good location.
Hanging Ditch is a hidden gem near Manchester cathedral. We were heading to a concert in the cathedral so dropped into here first. It's small so unless it's good enough to sit outside you may end up standing. The selection of wine is outstanding and the staff incredibly knowledgeable.
Top class wine merchant hidden around the back of Manchester Cathedral, and well worth the short diversion away from the more popular shopping areas. A good selection of high quality wines from around the world: if you want to splash out on something special, come here. The staff are passionate, knowledgeable and approachable.
They have an on premises licence, so you can stay and drink your purchase in the shop or at a table outside. A few wines are available by the glass, as well as nibbles and platters to go with it, and tea and coffee.
Intimate wine shop and bar.
Great range and although not a lot on the 'wine by the glass' list, there are enough to cover most tastes.
Big price difference between take home or drink in, so just be aware.
A lovely spot, especially on a sunny day. Great wine selection, either to drink in or if you want to take a bottle home. They also make a nice cappuccino:)
Very nice place to visit, great location, service is good. I found the wine (and beer) range (for serving at the tables) a little limited though. Quite a good range available to buy in the shop.
Great place to stop in for a glass of wine. Jazz soundtrack adds to the relaxed atmosphere. Also appears to stock an excellent selection of spirits. I'll definitely be coming back.
Good wine shop where you can also sit and have a couple of glasses! Right by the Arndale and has often has a few tables outdoors that look over the cathedral. They do close at around 7pm though, so it's not really an option for the evening
Discovered The Hangingditch yesterday evening. Ashamed I've not been aware of its existence before. The staff are very friendly and the selection of fine wines and spirits is amazing. We plan another trip soon.
In a corner by the cathedral, this small but well formed wine bar/shop offers great choice, expertise and occasional events that combine knowledge and taste to broaden the palate.
Looking for Mead in Manchester seems to be unreasonably challenging.
Of several department stores and a few other wineries/delicatessens this is the only place that had any.
The reason for 4 stars is one of the assistants in the shop insisted that the only mead they had in was of superior quality - as it has been purchased as a gift for a friend this was important.
A quick check on Amazon reveals this is not so clear cut.
Unlike the mead that had been tried by my friend (and hence the choice of gift) the one recommended by the assistant was questioned a number of times by Amazon users.
The final say will rest with us tonight I suspect - looking at the colour of the mead it isn't that promising.
Unfortunately an example of the semi-empirical benefits of web based shopping!
I've always had a lovely time here, especially when the weather is nice, where you can sit outside and have some of their great beers and wines. Knowledgeable staff, good stock, it's great.
Wine shop and bar with large outside space. They always have a selection of wines by the glass and you can choose from any of the wines in the shop for an extra charge. Always a good selection and a perfect place to spend an afternoon in the sun.
