For a restaurant/hotel in the middle of the gay village I wasn’t expecting the food to be great and I was happy to be proven wrong! Great tasting dishes for the price set. Always a great bar to have a drink with friends 👍🏼
Really enjoyed it. Helen and I stayed overnight on a Sunday and enjoyed both dinner and breakfast here. The staff were terrific, the cocktails lovely and both meals were very good. I had the devilled mushrooms on walnut bread, lovely and full of flavour and H had the smoked duck, a generous portion that she thoroughly enjoyed. For mains H tried the vegetarian curry which she said was really tasty and I plumped for a fillet steak. Perfectly cooked with an punchy peppercorn sauce and served with great hand cut chips. This left us so full that we failed on the dessert front altogether!
Breakfast was similarly good, my only complaint being that the temperature of the individual component parts was a bit variable. We loved the penthouse room and, on the whole, had a great time. We. Will return!
Excellent vegetarian option: mushroom suet pudding to die for. Go and soak in the atmosphere and a fab meal inthe friendly metrosexual environment.
Really good and not expensive. Try the spicy chicken!
My favourite village drinky place. Not too expensive, decent atmosphere and great service. For extra pointage, it sells white Rioja by the glass which is both unusual and a massive winner. Went today in the sun and well, the team were on form and made sure we were well watered.
I didn't eat there but the look (and smell) of the roast dinner was almost tempting to ditch my plans and eat there. Best place in the village for all round gayness. Love it.
This is a great spot in the summer with the outside seating or for an intimate dinner with friends family or a hot date in the evening. The moules mariniere and the rib eye steak with Rockfort sauce is to die for, as is the southern fried chicken. If you have a sweet tooth don't miss the chocolate salva : )
Decided to go here with two friends to have lunch basking in the sunshine. Had a very friendly waiter who was very attentive. We asked for pimms and it came out in a jug full with orange, cucumber and strawberries - delicious. They have a good extensive menu, with a choice of sandwiches, sharing plates, salads & main meals including pizza and pasta - we found it very hard to decide! In the end we ordered two fish finger sandwiches, a salmon & cream cheese sandwich (all with salad) and sweet potato chips & fries to share. Service was really quick and the portions were great! We all thoroughly enjoyed the food - I would definitely recommend the fish finger sandwich.
The food was great value for money and it was a great atmosphere to sit outside. Would definitely go again and recommend.
Discovered this my first day in Manchester as I was staying at the Velvet Hotel and was too hungry to explore.
The interior of Velvet is so cool and trendy, it was such a comfortable atmosphere. And of course, it didn't hurt that our server, Matt was friendly and incredibly good looking.
I ordered Paneer and my husband ordered the Sea Bass. His Sea Bass was amazing - cooked to perfection. My Paneer could have done with a little more spice, but I understand things aren't usually spiced to the extent I'd like it.
I'll definitely be back when I visit Manchester again
Love love love it here. The staff really accommodating as my boy wonder sausage and chips and it wasn't on the menu but they sorted. Cocktails well. My mum had 3 and even my dad liked the beer so all in all. A nice afternoon. Also the 50% of food in January was a great offer. Next time trying breakfast
I can't really say enough good things about this bar. Located on Canal street, this establishment is everything you'd expect given its namesake. Lush, velvet upholstery and chaise longues perch on a backdrop of flocked wallpaper and decadent light fixtures. The music is laid back, the lighting is low, overall creating the ultimate boudoir experience.
Don't let the fact that its in the Gay Village intimidate you should you be straight - it's one of the most welcoming bars in the town centre: the doorstaff are very friendly and the bar staff are expert cocktail makers happy to indulge you in your every whim. Not only that, but the drinks remain reasonable with all cocktails at £5.45, Champagne cocktails at £6.50 and a cocktail pitcher at a mere £14.95.
Velvet's eccentricity continues up the stairs and into the toilets - the former being a live fish tank, the latter housing TV screens in each cubicle. I haven't tried the restaurant yet, but my friends that have all concur - the quality remains despite the very reasonable prices (including a two-course meal offer at £12.95). A great hang out.
Very very good. A group of 6 of us came here for dinner. A few had been before but it was my first time. Everything was good. There are quite a few champagne cocktails, which lets face it, are just fun. I had the hake which was amazing. Great staff. I felt bad for the waiter, as a few in my group asked for separate checks and it turned into a big production. But he was super nice about it, although I felt terrible! Highly recommend.
Would time have withered my love for Velvet? Would it 'eck, like. From the glowing reviews you can imagine that I had absolutely no qualms about munching here during Laura N's visit after we'd had a few conference calls thanks to the hotel's free wifi, and having enjoyed a bit of light relief via BBC Three hilarity (Reality TV programmes about male halves of average couples remodelling the homestead while the oblivious female stays out of the way are always guiltily pleasing)... and you'll be getting a review of the hotel proper after this, that's a promise. I did after all spend a couple of hours in one of the rooms; it may not have been a night, but it told me everything I needed to know.
After a late lunch we were in the mood for light picky food, so we ordered up a pea and mint risotto with grilled halloumi cheese, a spicy salmon salad, some battered prawns and onion rings with alioli to share. The onion rings were light and fresh without a hint of grease, and the alioli mayonnaise didn't hold back on the garlic. Great for us, not perhaps for anyone who might have been talking to us! The battered prawns were more tempura than the breaded nature of the onions which made for a nice contrast, and they were served with a spot on sweet chilli sauce. Meanwhile the risotto was light, gooey and glutenous without that stale stickiness that can so often plague dishes of that kind, and the salmon melted in the mouth like a dream.
Our wines were delicious and the tap water was served without fuss. Speaking of service, waiters were friendly and patient and there was only a slight snag in terms of the bill collection which did nothing to hamper my enjoyment of the food. This really is top notch stuff. People come to this restaurant from all walks of life, whether they're staying at the hotel or not, or whether they're even affiliated with the Gay Village... it really does draw the crowds. I felt underdressed in my jeans and Bear Paws with my ridiculous green eskimo jacket but I was welcomed with open arms. Plus the decor is, as stated before, delightful and sophisticated. Velvet's definitely in Manchester's restaurant top 5, there's no doubt about it. As smooth as its material namesake, you can't go wrong with this one.
Velvet is amazing. I will say this another bar that has fallen victim of its own success so make sure you get here early.
The food is amazing and the service is second to none. You will find the place really easily as its just off Canal Street. I would recommend this place if your taking a large party of friends out as the place is really well set up for this type of occasion.
If you get here early enough you can get the early bird deal where you can get two courses for twelve pounds...amazing! Great food, great staff, fantastic location.
First time staying in Manchester and my wife booked the trip as a surprise for are 2 year wedding anniversary - my wife made a little comment about why we was going on booking and the hotel left chocolate and a nice little note ( unprompted) - nice touch from the staff. - see photo
Location is perfect and has a lovely atmosphere in the area. Everyone is super friendly and welcoming.
( we paid around £180-£200) for a Thursday which I think is super fair! And good value for the quility of the hotel! - just be aware the weekends are around £200-£300 which is way way to high! The perfect price for the hotel/ room we had IMO is £150-£230
Signature Duplex Suite is the room we booked!
Highly recommend -
Conveniently located in the heart on Manchesters gay village. The hotel exceeded all our expectations from the friendliness of the staff to the rooms. Was worried the room would be noisy on a Saturday night, with Canal Street right outside, but honestly, I could not hear a thing.
Check-in was smooth and efficient, and the rooms were beautiful, with the small touches really thought about.
The staff were very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble.
Would highly recommend!
fantastic welcoming staff, high spec rooms, fabulous location. on a work do but stayed here as wanted to avoid bland hotel chains so tried Velvet for the first time. this hotel was cheaper, far nicer with character. a great place, highly recommend to everyone for any type of event.
Brilliant location, good price too for the duplex suite! The bed was amazing and slept brilliantly!
Disappointed by cleanliness, there were toenails, screws, nails, dusty everywhere with dusty handprints on sofas, hairs left in Bath, limescale in kettle, knobs missing, windows filthy and extortionate prices for snacks in room,
We probably wouldn't stay again for those reasons.
Really loved the warm welcome from reception staff and also the friendly helpful service at check-out too.
The breakfast in bed option is a very nice touch and the food was great!
Bedroom, bathroom and balcony were all beautiful and very comfortable.
Will definitely be choosing Velvet from now on when we are in Manchester.
Been here twice, the first time we were upgraded to an absolutely amazing suite, but all the rooms are beautiful. And ALL the staff delightful - at reception, in the bar etc.
In the heart of the gay village so it shares canal street with all the booze spots and live entertainment you could ask for; also right near M Picadilly station (like, a 5 min walk away) - you just can't go wrong.
Primo place, primo location.
Great weekend stay here and really enjoyed this hotel. We found the room decorated and furnished well. Little touches like the Illy coffee machine made my mornings so much better (creature of habit when it comes to coffee as soon as I’m up).
Bath was brilliant. As a taller guy I struggle with usual smaller hotel baths but this was great with plenty of length and depth - a small touch of my own Penhaligons bath oil and I was in heaven!
Bed both large and very comfortable. As a personal preference, the only downside to the room was the centrally controlled temperature. It was set to 22c which as someone who loves the cold is too warm for me. Would have opened the window but….
The location is very central to Manchester and a vibrant and busy area with a number of bars and clubs nearby. Therefore expect some club/music noise up till around 3am on Friday and Saturday nights The double glazing keeps most of it out but there is some residual music noise… I had no issues sleeping through. If you want total peace and quiet maybe stay in the country or somewhere not in Central Manchester.
Would recommend this place and might even be back again…
Absolutely stunning elegant classy rooms we stayed in superior king so cosy I really didn't want to wake up would of been lovely for a full weekend stay....The bed was the comfiest bed i have ever stayed in ... I added some add ons to make it extra special was so pleased with the set out..they was a little confusion over the price of the add ons but was corrected the following morning and refund issued immediately....the bar was pleasant and staff was approachable and super friendly. Would certainly stay again...a 5 stars from me and the husband 💫💫💫💫💫
Great little fin. Was out for my partners birthday and we both loved it. Great staff, great drink (despite my Mrs deciding to drink bloody Mary's all night 🤣) but she loved them. Only slight issue we had was the blind wouldn't open in the morning but tbf, it was a grim rainy day anyway so no dramas. Will definitely be returning here. Loved everything about it. Cheers guys
Lovely hotel at the heart of Manchester. Wonderful reception staff. Room was clean and comfortable. No issues at all and would happily book again.
Lovely chilled out bar, and staff were very welcoming. Will definitely consider coming again!

I love this hotel. So comfortable and great quality. I’ve stayed most weeks this year and will continue to do so
Always have a nice meal in the restaurant here and the staff are very friendly and attentive.
There is a good choice of menu and the Sunday lunch is pretty good too!
Thanks to Thanos and Maggie, I had the most unforgettable stay at Velvet. I was a very last minute booking after a mishap with another hotel, and had such a warm welcome. Thanos gave me an upgrade to the duplex suite after he heard about the other hotel, and it was the best hotel room I’ve ever stayed in, and will ever stay in.
The bed was phenomenally comfortable, and the bathroom was beautiful. There were L’occitane cosmetic products, and a beautifully hot shower.
Everything was sparkling clean, and I felt like I could shut the door and the world disappeared. For a Friday night in Manchester, that’s a very hard thing to achieve. I never wanted to leave that room, not even to go out and explore the city.
Room service was so delicious, including an amazing cocktail.
Thank you so much to Thanos and Maggie, as they made a very hard afternoon into the best two night stay in Manchester.
We had a wonderful experience at the Velvet. Every staff member we encountered were delightful and eager to help!
I would like to personnaly thank Sinead and Rabab for their great service and for making us feel so welcome.
Thank you!
The hotel is perfectly located on Canal Street - we came back home with amazing memories.
Will definitely recommend to my friends, family and clients
