Lovely log cabin of a restaurant underneath the arches close to MEN/Victoria Station. We are no experts in Japanese sea food so asked the excellent , friendly servers to recommend some dishes. Great sashimi and sushi and an excellent tuna and chickpea curry. Washed down with a great bottle of Italian rose and a small flask of sake. All for 90 quid.Highly recommended. In a city where Spanish and Italian restaurants tend to dominate this a great alternative.

This sushi place is a little off the beaten track but is definitely worth the short journey. If the oysters are on the menu they are perfect. Do ask if they’re not on the board. Variety of Tunas is also great to try different styles.

Me and my friend had a nice dinner there on a weekday. The staff were very helpful with the menu, and gave us some good suggestions. Everything was so fresh and tasty definitely the best sashimi and sushi in the Manchester!

The place is quite small and quite, and it was fully booked on a weekday. So book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Went there for a dinner without a reservation but they a place for two near the bar so it was OK. First thing you might notice about the menu is prices are very specific, not like rounded up prices. Had 10 pieces 3 different kinds of sushi and I loved them all. Second best sushi restaurant I have ever been. First one is in US so I wouldn't bother. This is the best sushi in Manchester,UK!

...can taste the quality of the ingredients, which the peeps at Umezushi take great pride in - sourcing only the freshest and highest quality fish from Manchester's best suppliers. Also, I know it may seem like a little thing, but the wasabi was bloody gorgeous.

You're unlikely to find Umezushi by accident, situated as it is, in what you'd expect to be a lock up garage under the arches in a back street just off the main road to the MEN arena. Indeed, we hadn't found it by accident. We'd been given the heads up again by Mrs Petticoat , who highly recommended it, so I knew it was going to be special. Mrs Bacon, Dr Gambas and myself were meeting Ms. Arroz there who was stuck on the train from London which was delayed due to the snow. It was freezing outside, but we were given a warm welcome by both charming waitresses and the affable owner, Terry. It's quite simple inside, and we settled in the table by the radiator to keep warm and watched the sushi being made in the open kitchen. I was gutted that they'd run out of Estrella Inedit Beer (made with the assistance of the godfather of modern cuisine Ferran Adrià .) As I've not tried it yet, and as it was half price happy hour till 7pm, this beer would have been cheaper than you could buy it at in

The first course was a ‘Pan Seared King Prawn and Scallop’, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented with a lovely sweet sauce and just a hint of chilli and spice. The accompanying wine, a white from Egger-Ramer; a family run estate which has been handed down from father to son who produce wines using only native grapes. The fresh and crisp wine complimented the dish perfectly.

Where Umezushi really excels is with its Tempura – some of the lightest, crispiest batter I’ve had. It was particularly pleasing to be served Sea bass roe.

Umezushi... a small, simple, striped back interior ensures your whole concentration is focused on the balanced exactness that is the mainstay of Japanese food and which is recreated perfectly here.

Umezushi is one of the best sushi places in Manchester. Maybe the best - although I have not tried them all! It has won numerous awards including their chef Terry Huang winning the Chef of the Year award at the Manchester Food & Drink Awards 2016. Its located near the Manchester Arena, down a side street. Its a hidden gem. I am show many people don't even know about it. Its a very small restaurant and only has about 20 covers. The last time I went, it was a group of about 6 people and we ordered several things, which I can't remember exactly the names of what ordered. But all good! As well as the sushi/sashimi etc, we also ordered some side dishes like edamame and also a delicious Taiwanese pork rice. Was so good! Delicious! I would highly recommend going - its not cheap, but its well worth it. The first time I went to Umezushi was for a Yelp event and we got to try many different things. We also tried some plum sake which tasted SO good.

I enjoyed Umezushi last night, very good sushi but not world changing. The highlight for me was the hamachi nigiri and wagyu sushi. The hamachi melted in my mouth, possibly the best I have ever had. The wagyu was seared and had a brilliant charcoal infusion. I wish I had ordered more of both. I had the tuna sashimi combination, which included fatty tuna, mid fat tuna and lean tuna. While it was good, and I LOVE tuna, it wasn't great. The fatty tuna was seared, and probably too seared for my taste which lost its greatness. I also had a combination of the sushi specials, lobster, king crab and a minced tuna/quail egg sushi. Again, very good but not earth shattering. The presentation on the tuna/quail egg, though, was fantastic. Service was great (I sat at the bar), friendly and helpful. Good sake selection, both by the bottle and flask. Small restaurant and enjoyable.

I had been looking forward to coming to Umezushi for ages and I was so glad I finally got myself organised and made a reservation (it's very small, so you probably won't get seated without one during peak times). Despite being small, the chairs met with bf's approval (he doesn't like ones that make him slouch forward). Also meeting with approval was the plum/sake (?) that we drank. Service was highly efficient, friendly and helpful. I really like it when those working in a restaurant can give you good advice on options and are clearly enthusiastic and proud of their product (which they should be, in this case). We decided to try most of what was on special for the sushi. I don't generally like white fish sushi that much but I thought the kingfish had a nice flavour. The salmon sashimi was predictably good although not the best I've ever had (thank you chef Shimizu for putting the bar impossibly high). However, let us talk about the really good stuff: 1) Otoro (fatty tuna) 2) Wagyu beef sushi (on special, which is a shame as I want to eat it every day forever 3) EEL (i.e. UNAGI) both in nigiri and kushiyaki form GOOD LORD these three were good. As an example of how good they were, we ordered them all again. They are some of the most delicious things you can eat in Manchester today. The eel in particular was beautiful seasoned and cooked. The tuna was fresh and rich in flavour. And the wagyu to me tasted liked really excellent quality meat that had been perfectly prepared to be both extremely tender and tasty. Can't wait to go back!

Thanks to Yelp, I got to finally taste the best authentic sushi in Manchester at Umezushi! I've heard many good things about it and one of these was that it's listed in the Michelin guide! It's not 5 minutes out from the hustle bustle of Exchange Square but it's pretty isolated, tucked under the arches on Mirabel Street. I was slightly surprised that the place was already quite busy and still waiting for reservations to arrive! Luckily they found us space at the sushi bar, which I've decided are the best seats in the house! It's like the sushi chef is making sushi just for you! We got the Shikkoku black lager (actually lager, didn't taste like a porter or stout despite its looks) and a green tea for drinks. To start we had miso soup and then we were each served the prettiest bowl of sashimi of Argentinian rock shrimp, Hamachi (Japanese amberjack) and lightly pickled mackerel - the Hamachi was meaty and melty, the prawn was firm and sweet! We were then served 8 nigiri each in two sets. They were salmon topped with wasabi tobiko, Toro (tuna belly) topped with yuzu tobiko, scallop topped with regular tobiko seared Toro (topped with plum I think?), octopus, Wagyu steak, grilled eel (which I later learnt at a Yelp event that it's completely home made), and sea urchin. All were amazingly prepared to a high standard of presentation. The fish were fresh and sweet! (Still not a big fan of sea urchin though!) The picked cucumber and freshly pickled ginger that the sushi was served with were great to cleanse the palate with between sushis. Our 'stew' course was a consommé made with fresh abalone which had been slowly cooked so that it wasn't too chewy. This was sooooo nice! The soup looked clear but it was packed with flavour! The abalone pieces were meaty and had a good texture. Following this we had a 'grill' course of a small piece of Wagyu fillet steak that had been cooked over charcoal for added flavour. The steak was cut up into little pieces like melt in the mouth meat chocolate! Mmm. Try that from the specials menu if you don't take the tasting menu! To end with, we got melt in the middle chocolate pud and vanilla ice cream. It was made very well but I was expecting a more Japanese style pudding (with green tea/red bean/black sesame). Still, the night felt really special because of the quiet surroundings, immaculate presentation, polished service and really good quality ingredients! Five well-deserved stars! I'll definitely be coming here again!

Great little restaurant. Amazing food, and friendly helpful staff. The menu can be a little overwhelming if you don't know the different types of sushi, but the staff are happy to explain it to you. If you sit at the counter you can watch the chefs at work. The food us always delicious and they stock a mind boggling array if sakis.

I lived in such close proximity to this amazing sushi restaurant, but only discovered this thanks to Yelp! We came here at around ten on a Friday night, and it wasn't busy so managed to get a table from walking in. The sushi was incredible!! Really fresh and light. I think we definitely over-ordered - we had a small sashimi, the large sushi platter, extra vegetarian sushi, pickles, seaweed and edamame peas. The sashimi consisted of scallop, tuna and salmon and melted in your mouth. As we couldn't finish our platter they very kindly bagged it up for us. Staff were awesome, really sweet and knowledgeable about the dishes. It is quite pricey, and I think we went a little crazy so next time I would try one of their tasting menus.

The unagi don was way too sweet and the salmon head was way too salty. I think they should remeasure the amount of sauce they supposed to use cause the seasoning was really bad...... But the sashimi and sushi was really good and if you are a sushi stan, this will be perfect place. The 4 star is generally give to the sashimi, the environment and the services.

TL;DR Great Sashimi and Nigiri roll. VERY inexpensive lunch menu for the quality. Keep in mind that this is purely for their express lunch menu. I went in thinking I would get some crappy subpar fake overpriced sushi experience that's littered around Manchester...and going in for the lunch menu that was around 1/4 of what I would probably pay for dinner, I was basically setting myself up for failure. Oh boy was I wrong. I ordered the Tuna-don, gf ordered the Salmon-don, and we ordered the Umezushi Lunch Roll. Obviously the fish was of great quality, and if they gave us their crappier fishes...it just means their fish during dinner would be that much better. However the reason this is at least a 4 star venue is because their rice. YEA!! THEIR RICE! I would literally come here just for their rice now. This is where I fully conceptualized the importance of the sweet-ish vinegar-ish sticky-ness sushi rice's role in the whole experience. It's so good I can just eat the rice and be satisfied. If the rice sucks, it doesn't matter how good the fish is..the maki and nigiri is ruined. The rice needs to be at least on the level of the fish. This place shoots to 5 stars because their express lunch menu is so affordable. Under 20 pounds for 2 people at a sushi joint. I left feeling the onset of food coma. This was already a foodie destination as one of the only serious sushi places, but the express lunch menu makes it a place you should definitely visit.

Run by a lovely Japanese family, this place is incredibly hard to find but worth every step! Slightly pricy for the a la carte menu but if you ever dip in for lunch they have a fantastic lunch special menu in the price range of £8-9. Food is tasty and you can tell everything is fresh. Definitely a perfect place to take friends of someone special as the ambience is very contemporary and quiet.

Randomly walked into this place, its one of them gem places. Hidden but highly sought after. When we came in the place was booked. Small tiny place but that's Japanese for you. However the host/waiter said we can sit at the bar. I ordered as I always do miso soup and sashimi before hitting for every single item on the kushiyaki menu and whatever they had on the specials menu. The special menu changes from day to day depending on what they get in so I'm sure it is fresh produce. On that day they had cobia collar which was really freaking good. Good selection of sake and Japanese whiskey. Service was slow on that day but only one waiter on floor so its expected however we didn't have to wait for food the chef would just hand whatever was ready over the bar. Sushi and Japanese food/drink lovers need to hit this place up.

I love Japanese food and there really aren't enough Japanese restaurants in Manchester. Had wanted to go to Umezushi for ages. This is a small little joint under the arches near Victoria station- it's a bit out on the edge of town but worth the trek. Went early around 5pm but the place was fully booked from about 8pm onwards. It's not cheap but the food is excellent. Make sure you get the aloe Vera juice, could drink that all day!! Ordered a bunch of dishes including miso grilled aubergine, salmon head, tuna uramaki, crab uramaki, miso soup and Taiwanese pork rice. All delicious. They have a specials board which included things like snow crab, tuna tataki and salmon teriyaki. The main menu has a variety of sashimi, udon dishes, sushi rolls and tempura. Prices vary from about £4 per dish to £15. They also have set menus and sashimi/sushi platters. Joshua the waiter was lovely and very helpful with choosing dishes. All in all a great meal and casual setting- music is a bit serene but had a great time. The prawn tempura looks INCREDIBLE- didn't get it but saw some people on the next table eating it.

Gorgeous little Japanese restaurant with an open kitchen where you can see the chefs prepare the sushi / sashimi / tempura of your choice. We ordered a couple of things off the menu, but mainly were on the hunt for some fresh sashimi. We were not disappointed, the tuna and salmon were amazing. Incredibly good quality fish which tasted very fresh. We had a couple of sides and also a miso which I have to admit is probably one of the nicest miso soups I have had. We were very pleased with the quality of food at the end considering it all only came to £18. The staff were pleasant, food came very quickly and the atmosphere was chilled. We noticed they do a variety of selection boards and also some great looking set meals which we are keen to try when we are a bit more hungry. It is a pretty small place so unless you're heading down super early, make sure you book! Great place, will be heading back in the new year to check out some more things on the menu :)

The true meaning of a hidden gem, and one that I would not have known about without Yelp! Umezushi is snook away and you'd be forgiven for walking straight passed without even turning up the street - but trust me, proceed, turn into their street and experience some Sushi sensation! Terry, Hannah and the rest of the staff that run Umezushi are really fantastic. Incredibly passionate and focus on providing an amazing experience for guests. The sushi if fantastic, fresh and full of flavour, and there is a good choice! Tip: Try some Sake - they have an amazing selection!

Wow - what a fantastic place this is! If you love Japanese food then make sure you get yourself here for a fantastic range of sushi, tempura and some of the best BBQ ribs I've ever had! Just tucked in by the Manchester Arena under one of the bridges, space is limited so booking ahead is advised. Food is cheap, drinks are great value (£3 an Asahi) avid service was with a smile! Definitely up there with Yuzu as my fave Japanese in Manchester :-)

Been now a couple of times and after some initial teething problems they have reached a great standard of both food and service (for Manchester). It's easily the best sushi place I have tried in Manchester and apart from a daily changing fresh fish selection for sushi, the also have hot special dishes. Recommend the tempura whitebait - lovely batter, great dipping sauce and a good sized portion too. Don't be put off by the location. It's worth going a few steps out of the city centre for.

Finally got to try this out yesterday! Its quite a small place and so easy to miss, inside its a very cosy with an open kitchen. First impressions I was a bit biased. .four British looking men stood behind the high counter which failed to give that "japanesey" feel...the menu was set in nice parchment paper with sketches of sushi. .which was a nice touch..skimming the sashimi / sushi menu it did seem a little pricey. I settled on sea bream sashimi and a spicy tuna bowl for main....the seabream was a tasty and presented beautifully but the portion was tiny for the price. The tuna bowl was the best value for money..at £14 it came with lots of sushi rice and a good topping of sashimi tuna. I was quite full after this even though I was tempted by the special board! Overall this place definitely a must. .would have perhaps felt more comfortable with a non open kitchen with japanese people? This is somewhere to go for super quality sashimi but you will pay for it...

I would probably score this a 4.5 out of 5 if Google would allow, so it's a 5 based on this system. However, let's get this straight - the food is excellent. We booked it as part of a joint birthday celebration and it's probably the best sushi we've ever had. We're both sushi fans and ordered off the a la carte menu. We had the luxury sushi platter coupled with a few other dishes including the salmon head on a recommendation, which was a delicious surprise. Highlight of the sushi for me was the Smoked Eel (unagi) and the prawn. Even the sides like the fresh pickled ginger and vegetables stood out. Why the 0.5 retraction if I had to? I feel the service and venue could be better to match the quality of the food. We will be back though.

The dining experience here with my other half was exceptional at Umezushi. If you were to come in the evening, then booking an table would be recommended. Even though we booked a table for 3 persons on the rigid booking system online, we informed the staff on arrival an individual could not come and they said it was no problem. Service was professional, straight forward and informative. Despite as every table had customers; it was worth the wait as we knew our food was being prepared meticulously. Every piece of fish or seafood served was fresh and amazingly flavourful, no 'off' smell. The Otoro (Fatty part of Tuna) Nigiri just melted in our mouthes and what a delight it was as well as the Tiger Prawn Uramaki. This was followed by the 12 piece sushi platter that was amazingly prepared that each piece was just an art in its own. We paired our food with a simple green tea and the portion of fish was generous. Sadly for food of such high-grade, we cannot expect the price of our meal to be cheap, and this is the only Con. Would certainly recommend and go back for more.

Such an amazing and cozy place! Very small restaurant with Japanese atmosphere. You can see all the raw fish selection and the cooking process, the food comes out very quickly and sake menu is very rich and tasty. We got Large sashimi platter and then had 8 extra pieces of white fish and scallop sashimi - fish was SO fresh, it was melting in the mouth. We also had salmon+avocado and king prawn maki which were bigger than average ones you’d expect in a Japanese restaurant but they were delicious as well. Pineapple dessert was quite weird, probably not my thing but I’m 1000% coming back again
