I was so pleased to find this gem of a place whilst visiting for a few days. The curries were delicious (vegan friendly) and the perfect amount for a solo traveller to take away in a box and eat immediately with a view of the sea. Served with a good sense of humour and a smile. When I visit Lynton again I know where I will be going first for my dinner. I highly recommend :)
We visited Lynton today and came across this wonderful place.
Being a curry fan myself, the wife and I bought two frozen curry’s and fresh pilau rice. One vegetarian and one chicken.
Everything was as authentic as you can buy, the flavours were complex and so delightful. Luckily we live only 20 miles away, so we will be back to try something new.
What a find! So please to have found this. Really lovely and friendly too.
This is an ideal place to get wonderfully seasoned Indian food take out. We took dishes to our rental, added some naan and vegetables, and had three fantastic meals.
Also loved the chutney. Ours was mango.
We have multiple connections to South Asia, and this food was also authentic.
Cooked with love.
Love the amazing food here. It's our second year of getting our curry here, when in Lynton. Wish there was great food like this where I live.
Coincidence? Not sure, but just before leaving home for a trip to Lynton my wife said she would really love to have an authentic Indian meal, not like the standard oily yellow slop from Brick Lane, but a well cooked wholesome vegetarian home cooked one, so when we saw The Spicy Mare and read the reviews, we had to try it and boy, it was fantastic! Delicious and well cooked with fresh herbs sprinkled on top, each dish with its own taste and aroma, we will be back!
The Spicy Mare has become a firm favourite, must visit when in the Lynton & Lynmouth area.
We’ve enjoyed many dishes-most recently on this occasion, Goan pork, beef rogan josh, dahl and sweet potato and spinach curry.
The food was delicious, with layers of different flavours -we could taste the individual spices and the flavoursome meat and vegetables.
The dishes were so tasty, with just the right amount of heat-I like to be able to enjoy the taste of ingredients, without overpowering heat, for me these were spot-on.
Husband made a point of commenting on the tenderness of the beef and pork (which Ilona mentioned is from a local farm).
The quality of the ingredients and the skill and care in preparation (from scratch) shines through in every aspect of the meal. The rice tastes amazing (how I wish I could cook rice that way) and with the giant naan really helped to make the meal.
Ilona sells homemade chutneys and the mango chutney has become an obsession 😊 with a few poppadoms and a pre-curry G and T. Heaven.
We bought a tiffin tin, which Ilona refills. Portions are generous and as well as being sustainable and reducing plastic, it also reduces the bill, as a discount is applied when the tin is used! Win-win!
Queen Street in Lynton has a fabulous foodie vibe.
We’ve genuinely loved every dish and appreciated Ilona’s passion for the product….
The Spicy Mare is something very special.
Lynton and Lynmouth, the Valley of Rocks and the Cliff Railways are discoveries in itself.
But the biggest surprise of this twin city snug into the windy coast of Devon awaits behind an unassuming shop front in Queen Street.
Ilonas home-made Curries are a delicacy swept down from the heavens. Indian food prepared with love and care, and always the perfect amount of hotness. Even if you are not hungry, stop by and have a chat with the host. Being far travelled she fits perfectly into the neighbourhood, like she never did anything else. Ilona is like the sister you always dreamed of having, and her food is out of this world.
Discovered this little gem through a quick Google for a takeaway option on our holiday and picked it up after a coastal walk around Lynton. Fantastic food and very friendly owner. Believe the 5 star reviews. Delicious
Food is great, home cooked and healthy. Menu changes every week and portions are big. I loved the curry and dhal. I went twice during my stay in Lynton, would highly recommend
We discovered this delicious place when visiting Lynton last year and put it high on our "must visit again" places. This year we made it a priority to visit and it did not disappoint! Delicious food which you can take away in traditional tins. Easy to carry and it stays warm too! Our favourite activity now is to take away some food and then have a picnic nearby on the church ground overlooking the bay or next to the railway. Or take it back with us to the campsite which worked well too.
We had the aloo gobi, coriander naan, rice, and dal. All equally delicious!
