We were lucky enough to secure a reservation at a restaurant serving traditional Indian cuisine during our stay in London. Despite being located in the busy area of Soho, the restaurant provides a serene and cozy atmosphere that feels like a small oasis amid the hustle and bustle.
The restaurant has achieved a remarkable balance between spice and flavor, resulting in every dish being a delightful treat for your palate. The food is cooked to artistic perfection, and every dish is seasoned perfectly, tasting as good as it looks. The flavors of the food complement each other wonderfully, resulting in a delectable fusion that tantalizes your taste buds.
The service is outstanding, with friendly and efficient staff who offer excellent recommendations for the best dishes to order. I was particularly impressed by the freshness of the food and the quality of service, which made for one of the best Indian dining experiences I've had outside of India. Both the tandoori chicken and chocolate dessert are exceptional choices.
Our server was extremely helpful and friendly, and the prices are in line with the area. To be honest, our bill was slightly cheaper than I had expected it to be.
Food for excellent and their service was impeccable. Highly recommend the lamb and prawn toast. They have a great selection of drinks and cocktails as well. Better than Dishoom!
This is my third Gunpowder location and once again, it was a great experience. The service is always impeccable and tonight was no exception. We were sat at the back of the restaurant where walls are covered with red velvet curtains. I am already intrigued. I posted a pic of the menu. We had the crab as a small plate and everyone should order it, simply put it is special. For the main pumpkin and shrimps. Both remarkable but the shrimps were another level. For dessert we had the dark chocolate one, a thick ganache which again was very satisfactory. Long story short, book yourself a table and have a great time at the soho gunpowder location! Bravo!
Insanely brilliant food!!
The ambience is a bit dark and old especially in the seating area inside.
But the food is so worth it! I think we ordered almost everything in the menu! The starters - prawn toast, the aloo chaat, soft shell crab, beef, lamb etc all were perfect! The egg masala was very good.
I liked the service as well. The staff was patient and very proactive.
It is a must go to place!
love all the food, we all really love the lamb chop, tender and juicy with so much flavour, kids love ❤️ it, they cook lamb chop very well, better than many western restaurants we have been to! other food are too spicy for my kids. we all love the triple chocolate brownie with ice cream. tandoori chicken was great too, love the sauce. service was great, friendly and efficient staff, restaurant manager 👍🏽👍🏽 love the potato salad, beef and prawn too🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ definitely will go again! we didn’t know where to go and luckily we walked into Gunpowder
Great Indian food, not the traditional curry but well balanced dishes. The mixed grill with chicken, shrimps and broccoli was an explosion of flavour.
Gunpowder is a spice that is different from other spices as it is often consumed as a condiment by itself. Gunpowder aims to bring that same gastronomical experimentation to Indian cuisine and serve it in a quaint, no frills eatery in Soho. In a classification of Indian eateries in London in a 2*2*2 matrix (clientele: Desi-as-they-come vs Pan-London cosmopolitans; food: experimental af and uses venison and other atraditional ingredients or traditional ingredients atraditionally vs dhania-jeera-pyaz-lehsun brigade; and setting: easy vs hoty-toity) this fits in as mostly desi-highly atraditional-easy seating category and it's definitely worth a visit.
INCREDIBLE FOOD!
Traditional flavours from India, my friends still shock for the quality of the food. I’m not exaggerating when I say the balance between spicy and flavour was absolutely perfect in this restaurant. Every plate allows you to enjoy the spice while you can still taste the chicken and the vegetables. The flavours were “competing”with each other while perfectly balanced. Just delicious!
The place is small and cozy which is perfect for an environment like Soho full of noise and movement everywhere. It’s like a small oasis’s. The service was brilliant, super smooth and friendly. They advise and they let us know the best plates to order. I was particularly impressed with the treatment to my celiac friend who they kindly advise what she should try and what wasn’t suitable for her.
I’d recommend people to book in advance but definitely a 10 out of 10!
Celebrated our son’s graduation, Super delicious food. They were very kind to bring a brownie with icecream with a candlelight for our son. 5 stars
Went for a light lunch before it got busy at 11:30am.
I got the ginger and cucumber soda, which was quite good and almost made me order a 2nd. I didn't order it as I was trying to keep light on the smaller side food wise.
I also got the chicken tandoori chop and that was the perfect snack for lunch. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was easy. The tomato sauce... I think it was tomato.... was great and compliments the chicken. There was a small side salad with the order which was perfect.
I think you could order rice and also another small plate and call that a full meal. Would come back again.
Some of the best Indian food I've had. Here's a life tip. Make a reservation here and skip the queue at that other spot down the street
Best Indian restaurant we have been to, hands down. The food was to die for and the service we received from Agnelo was simply outstanding! Cannot wait to get the chance to come back to London so we can dine here again. Thank you for everything!
First of all! The decor is alright. The seating was great! Nice and comfortable.
The man and woman who served up were very polite and welcoming.
Parking is terrible as per usual in London. But not the restaurants fault...
Now for the food....
Everything was cooked to an artistic perfection, Tasted as good as it looked. Hats off to the chef. The prawn toast and the lamb chops were the star of the show.
This would have been a 5 star review if, there was more than plain rice in the rice selection
Some of the tastiest Indian food you'll get in London. Genuinely everything tasted fantastic, seasoned to perfection and arrived quickly. Our server was really helpful and friendly. Prices are what you expect in the area, to be honest our bill was slightly cheaper than I thought it would be. If you're looking for a Korma, go elsewhere. If you want a great taste experience, try Gunpowder. Thanks for having us Gunpowder!
Had such a great meal at Gunpowder Soho! Every dish was on point on flavour, texture and portion, good service was a plus! Highlights were the Prawn toast and soft shell crab. We even got a lovely brownie for our anniversary celebration!
Some outstanding and very flavoursome food, specifically the dishes that come more from the Southern parts of India with its deep and intense flavours and great range of heat/spice. The best dishes were the Goan style prawns (which are finger licking good), the soft shell crab and the beef pepper fry, all a must try! We were a table of 9 (a bit of a squeeze as the restaurant isn't that big), and the service was very good and the food came out at a nice rate, so credit to them for that as that's not easy. Our server really helped us out with deciding with the quantity of food and how many of each dish which saved a lot of headaches for the group. They were late in giving us our table, but that wasn't much of an issue as we were able to just grab a drink at the bar.
Now the reason for the 4 stars and not 5 (they're actually a 4.5 rather than just a 4) - the sizes between the small plates and sharing plates were not that different on some dishes. I would have expected some of the sharing plates to be bigger especially for the prices you're paying for those dishes. The lack of options for side dishes, not sure why the only carb option is rice, as the dishes scream out for paratha's, appams or some sort of bread to mop up all that delicious sauce from the dishes. They serve an uttapam with one of the small plates, so they definitely have the ingredients and skills to do it. I think the decision to only do rice under the premise of "contemporary food" was a mistake, I can understand why as it's obviously quicker for them just to just do rice for a quicker service.
Overall, a great Indian restaurant to go to and would highly recommend if you want to try different styles of Indian food away from the norm and classics of North Indian cuisine. The flavours will keep you coming back for more! Please just put some bread on the menu! But regardless, I would happily come back.
