TL;DR
If you are in London and in search of superior food, cocktails and proper ambiance replete with the option of refined musical entertainment, look no further. If you are a fan of Alfred Hitchcock and would like to spend an evening in his hometown, that’s a bonus.
______
General Impressions:
The Rear Window (yes, a nod to Alfred Hitchcock) is an up-and-(re)coming restaurant appealing to both the unrefined yet exuberant youth and the more upscale gentry of the city. Come one, come all - either one-at-a-time or en masse; the restaurant has seating to fit all occasions: Secure a table in the main dining area, outfitted with immaculately reupholstered vintage couch seating that can manage large groups, find a secluded nook for two aside a true wood-burning fireplace, or catch a seat at the wraparound bar.
As you enjoy the best Old Fashioned cocktail or a concoction of your choice (the bartenders are impressively adept at on-and-off-the-menu mixology, unlimited by spirit options), take in the attention to detail that adorns the entire inner workings of the establishment. If you are looking for musical entertainment, expect - on the right day and time - to encounter both local and transitory minstrels of varied but always refined execution that will provide a musical backdrop that is complementary to (not invasive of) your dining and/or drinking experience. If you want something more open-air, the Rear Window boasts an expansive patio dining experience (shaded in the spring daytime, warmed in the autumn evening).
If you are a fan of Hitchcock, this is a must-visit stop while you are in the great author’s hometown area (having lived just down the street).
______
What to LOOK for:
- Amazing food (best Thai curry for miles)
- Expansive list of house cocktail offerings (plus deftly executed recipes upon request)
- Warm and receptive staff ready to expertly host individuals, couples or parties
- Appreciative attention to detail and a general artistic expertise in creating a perfect film noir backdrop for casual drinking & dining
______
What to look OUT for:
- There is an adjacent hotel (Sir Alfred Hitchcock Hotel). While a nice place to stay, the overall experience of the hotel is not of the caliber of the nominally similar restaurant. They are separate entities and each should be experienced in and for its own merits
Fantastic lunch here. Food was hot and delicious....chicken served with roast veg and Yorkshire pud....yummy!
Staff were excellent... friendly and very attentive. Beautifully decorated conservatory room with table linen. Seemed very child friendly.
Will definitely recommend.
I had an amazing 5-star experience at the restaurant that offered a unique blend of dining and entertainment. The combination of delicious starters, main courses, and desserts with interactive crime-solving alongside the actors in the "Who Killed Beautiful Isabella" storyline made it a truly memorable evening. Highly recommended for a one-of-a-kind dining adventure!
The food is excellent, really loved the Korean ribs.
Staff were friendly and efficient, and the space restaurant space is nice.
The Hitchcock hotel to which its attached provides some entertainment (especially the loos!)
First time there and so happy we came! The food was so good, perfectly cooked and so tasty, impeccable service and fantastic location! A little bit pricey but definitely worth it for the experience we got. Cannot wait to go back!
From the warm welcomes of every staff member to the absolute amazing taste of the each course. I highly recommend the rear window with their wide range of cocktails and drinks throughout each service.
We had an amazing night at the 1920s Murder Mystery Event....it was so much fun trying to guess Whodunnit with a delicious three course meal... lovely staff and great company! The actors were brilliant too....all round fabulousness and we'll definitely be back xx
We had a great Sunday roast here for a friends birthday, sitting outside in the sunshine on the nice patio area. It was nice to be asked how I wanted my roast beef, which came perfectly pink alongside some lovely cocktails.
The service was really great too - the (fabulously dressed!) staff members were super friendly, let us bring a cake along, and even asked the birthday boy’s name so they could join in singing happy birthday with us! It was overall a great vibe (make sure to check out the kitsch toilet decor too!)
Visited with the family for Sunday lunch, naturally at this time of year they have updated the menu to include lighter bites but still have a hearty roast too. Atmosphere was welcoming and staff went above and beyond to rectify a minor issue, thank you! Dining room looks amazing too, great job with the decor, we will be back for dinner!
We went to the restaurant last night and had a lovely evening. The food was very good and full of flavour. We went with the burrata and arancini for starters, followed by the Thai curry and sea bass for main course. The cocktails were creative and looked awesome. Great music choice for the atmosphere too. We will be coming back, that’s for sure!
We were truly spoiled at the Rare Window Restaurant yesterday as we booked for dinner. To start with, the food was a delight for our eyes and tastebuds.Totally recommend the Jerusalem Artichoke soup with crispy artickoke and truffle oil, (it taste like heaven), the Korean pork ribs, the blackened miso salmon and the sirloin steak with kimchi butter, all dishes were delicious, fresh and well presented. We paired it all with Campari Spritz that was excelent! If you're coming with the litlle ones, there is a nice Kids menu, we went for the grilled chicken breast and my baby boy absolutely loved it, the meat was tender and tasty!
The new dining place is so cozy! The ambience, decor that brings uniqueness at its best and the amazing music makes you forget about having to go home.😊
Thank you Ruth and Will and your fantastic dedicated team for an amazing time!
We'll definitely come back for more and will recommend you loudly!😊 👏 regards ✨️
This is a really special restaurant. Atmosphere is gorge - calm and atmospheric. Sat in the gorgeous light filled conservatory with rain tipping down outside. The service was exceptional - really accommodating with us and our kids on Sunday lunch. And the food was 10/10 - amazing tuna ceviche, miso salmon, beetroot carpaccio. And choose the cooking of your Sunday roast beef - so good if you’re a fan of rare! This will definitely be our new Walthamstow go to for any special occasion. 10 out of 10!
The best meal we’ve had in ages. Just a delight. Had the veggie yellow curry and miso salmon. Staff were lovely. Great price. Can’t rate it enough.
Came here to celebrate an anniversary and the food did not disappoint! You are looked after from when you arrive, we had some cocktails to wait and then seated in the refurbished restaurant which has a lovely airy feel.
Food was delicious, we had the burrata and arancini to start which were cooked to perfection then we had the onglet steak and the Thai yellow curry which were both excellent.
Only took one star away as my partner reported the men's bathrooms were less than perfect but overall had a great evening 😀
Absolutely sumptuous meal - fresh ingredients with wide variety of vegetarian options lovingly prepared by the chef. Attentive but non-intrusive waitering made for a wonderful afternoon. As for the cocktails; at last a haven in Leytonstone that has an innovative and creative mixologist, hurrah! Well done to all, fabulous venue.
This is such a welcome gem to the area. We had hands down THE best veggie roast ever (and my partner said the chicken was also amazing). Incredible wellington, with perfect root veg and gravy. The staff were super attentive and accommodating (when we asked to swap an item on our kids roast). Really friendly, and the restaurant (at the rear) is just beautiful. Yes there is an upmarket feel, but in a relaxed and approachable way. And I don't think this is more in price than any of the other 'good' pubs locally, but you def get a better standard of food and service.
We shall be spreading the good word, and please do not ever leave Ruth and Will!
(some more veggie dishes on the main menu would be v welcome so there is more variety on each visit. We would certainly visit more often if this was the case - feels fairly meat weighted currently)
Always have such a great time here. It’s a REAL gem in so many ways. We ate in the main restaurant and had cocktails in the bar before and after. Felt so welcomed, loads of fun and the food was delicious. Thanks for a fab night x
