Hard to find gem for steaks.
Incredible main courses.
Nice small selection of tapas like dishes however some are rather mediocritly size dishes for the price.
Huge selection of drinks (not many non alcoholic : mostly cocktails)
Deserts were limited however the chocolate moose was decent.
Overall ideal place to take a group of people. Choices are limited for food even more so if you are vegetarian, however definatly worth the visit.

We were there for dinner on saturday. I thought it was going to be a steak restaurant but it actually turned out to be a fun bar, in fact more like a dive bar. Since we got in early we found a table close to the bar and worked our way through some amazing cocktails. Apparently the alcohol is home brewed, a definite plus in my book.
Consider the fact that off the shelf spirits are still used widely in many bars and restaurants, putting this establishment in a league of it's own.
The bartenders actually put on a show when they are creating the cocktails and as far as those are concerned, i'd highly recommend the VOC blazer, a flaming concoction that's mostly alcohol with a great deal of skill thrown in. Another favourite of mine is the pirate's curse which would be suitable for the lovers of rum.
We went up to the dining room later and as promised, my steak was really good. Aged angus beef, I think. The service was impeccable. We stayed late as the place really got busy and the atmosphere proved to be very inviting. This place does not close early as the party just keeps on going.

Had a round of excellent cocktails in the small bar area. They were all very creative and delicious. The service was quick and friendly also.

Private and intimate location. Unusual, delicious cocktails. Beautiful, nautical decor. Relaxed atmosphere. Good place to unwind after a hard day at work.

An office colleague recommended the cocktails here and i took my wife yesterday. The cocktail bar was very impressive with a selection of spirits brewed in house as well as some popular brands. The secret i guess was in the home made spirits. The flavours were really good and Unique. We ordered a couple of Steaks later and they proved to be very good. the meat was tender and fresh, prime beef cuts. Every meal came with chips and salad and again I was not disappointed. Clearly a great deal of care had gone into this. I will return soon as the quality of the food and drink is close to what one gets in an up market restaurant or four star hotel.

This is a very unique establishment. The bar downstairs carries a variety of liquors from the dutch east indies. I really liked the pirate's curse. We were allowed to dine in the pub area as we found some comfortable seating. The dutch east indies theme was rather pleasant. Our waitress recommended the tapas selection which proved to be both tasty and unique in flavor. My favorite was the grilled lamb chops and crispy duck salad. There is no live music but the place has a certain quality to it and we had an excellent dining experience.

Fabulous experience. The food, drink, service and overall experience was first class.
Lovely vegan friendly tapas and reasonable prices.
It caters mainly to businesses in the area during the week so we had a lovely meal on Saturday without the hustle and bustle of too many weekend diners.

Ok, its very simple. Where did this place come from? Is this an upmarket steak house dressed as a pub or a pub with a very good steak chef? ?? Anyway, I was there last evening with some friends and we ordered a bunch of things from the menu including burgers, steaks, chicken wings and this is not your usual pub fare. It's serious restaurant quality and i'm going back soon. The bartender also mixes some excellent cocktails and the place has very nice, rustic atmosphere.

Last evening found us in Kings Cross, Varnishers Yard to be precise, pub hopping and looking for a good place to wine and dine. I'd read about this place, VOC, in the local dining establishment times and it came highly recommended. We had not made a reservation, so we were put on the list and had some really excellent cocktails outside. The cocktails were clearly crafted by an expert hand and the tastes really unique. After a few minutes we were ushered inside and began to understand why this place was so popular. The atmosphere was colonial dutch east indies, circa 1700, rattan and cane furniture, book shelves, books, you name it. The bar looked positively wicked, like a magicians potion cabinet, indeed the mixmaster could have passed off as one. The whole place was filled with yuppie types, businessmen still in suits and lots of arty farty types. The mixmaster recommended the steaks and we ordered our food.
We were led upstairs when the food was ready and all I can say is, the steaks were incredible! The meat was fresh, tender and done so right. Accompanied with triple cooked chips and fresh salad, a force to be reckoned with.
We continued with the party after the meal and worked our way through the unique cocktail menu.

This is a different kind of bar altogether. We had our steaks, really good aged steaks, in the restaurant upstairs. We decided to have drinks in the pub and there was a party kind of atmosphere going on. The bartenders were mixing drinks like in the movies, showing off, throwing bottles and even making some flaming drinks, one of which I had, the voc blazer. People were hooting, singing....................party place.

Found this place tucked away next to my hotel when I saw a board in the street for it's 17th century inspired cocktails. Decided to give it a go!
Ordered a South Sea Mountain. Delicious and pretty strong! All the cocktails are a little out of the ordinary if a little pricey.
Food wise I tried the nachos and the Falafel burger. The food was delicious, served very quickly and piping hot. Decor is a cross between a sea captains mess hall from days of yore and an Indian mansion. Very nice place!

This is a real American style dive bar tucked away in Kings Cross. The decor is 18th century javanese, the spirits are brewed in house and the grill is very good. I had the sirloin the other day, it come on a large plate with salad and triple cooked fries - it was great. The standoff no 2 from the bar proved to be excellent with a real kick to it. . The whole place gets busy so it's a good idea to make reservations.
Lovely joint.

I had the small plate selection and it was very good. Our waitress recommended the umami chicken, calamari, hoisin duck and oxtail ravioli.
All items were top notch and quality wise, far superior to standard bar fare. VOC blazer cocktail is recommended, but put the flames out first.

I do'nt really know how to class this place as it is very unique in design. has excellent food and cocktails and is probably one of the most popular establishments in Kings Cross.
The first thing we noticed about this place was the ambience. it has a chilled out, rustic kind of feel and the bartender is really very good, he created some really excellent cocktails for us.
The dinner area uptairs is very different, it is ambient and cosy and ideal for small groups. We ordered the panko calimari and chicken wing starters. The items arrived quickly and tasted good. Both of us opted for burgers as a main, mine the Cheese with aged beef. The aged beef was very well done, the burger came with lettuce and the bun tasted very fresh. It was so good that it did not need a sauce at all. We did not have any desserts but instead went downstairs to the bistro area to take in the atmosphere and continue drinking. Good food, good drinks, good atmosphere.

A very impressive bar that does it's own alcohol in-house. A wide variety of cocktails as well and I tend to like the esoteric ones so i'll go with the pirate's curse, strong in every sense. The restaurant does some tasty food that they'll gladly bring to you, we had the spicy buffalo wings and beef sliders. Pity there's no dj, it is a nice party like atmosphere after 8.

My boss bought us here for steak. The food is very good, service tip top and staff are very friendly. My third time and our waitress remembered my name.
I recommend the fun bar downstairs, cocktails are very good and people are friendly.

A really interesting place. There's lots of great home brewed cocktails here that i've never tried or even heard of anywhere else. The 'ceylon arrack' was great for me as do like my rum. We got a selection of mini burgers to bite and they tasted really good.
