You need to visit this hidden restaurant tucked inside Turnips, London’s finest greengrocer. Tomas Lidakevicius (good luck pronouncing that), serves some of the finest seasonal dishes, made from Turnips very own fruit and veg, paired with the best fish and meat Borough market has to offer. The tasting menu is sublime with beautifully balanced and nuanced dishes. Set under fairy lights, in the outdoors but protected from the elements, it is a beautiful venue both airy in the summer and toasty in the winter.
The pros : original setting, set in a vegetable stall of Borough market, and right below the railway. Onion was the best dish of the set menu.
The cons : the industrial atmosphere can become overbearing after some time (particularly the constant noise of the trains). Prices are on the high side. Wine list wasn’t correct vintage wise, but the staff kindly offered us 2 glasses of wine. Service was a bit slow towards the end.
This place is an absolute hidden gem inside the very busy Borough market. We were a little tired walking around the market and wanted to sit down and have a bite, which is somewhat impossible at the Borough market. So glad we spotted Turnips and they were open. We ordered their two course menu along with some cocktails. The dishes look quite small in size, but they somehow are very filling. The representation was 10/10. Everything tasted so yum and interesting. Staff were super lovely and helpful. The cocktails tasted fresh and different. It was an experience we never expected to have inside the busy crowded market. Highly recommended!
【update: they have refunded me after they saw this comment. I appreciate what they did so I will give it 5 stars】It is a nice restaurant that connects with the borough market but is quite modern and posh. Their food range from 65-110 pounds, 65 for 2 courses, 85 for 3 courses, and 110 for 7 courses. The reason why it is so expensive is because they all fusion food and the ingredients are shaped from different countries throughout the world. I loved the Spanish ham and it was an interesting experience to try Madagascar chocolate. The ice creams are good but nothing really special I don’t understand why they use stone to contain ice cream because it made the ice creams melt soooo fast! THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS, be aware of the consumption trap!!! While we were eating, they came to ask us if we wanted truffles and caviar, and they said it was 80 pounds, but they didn’t explain to us it was 80 pounds per person, and we were focused on eating and weren’t sure how it works so we just ordered it. The other thing we didn’t expect is that their service fee is 60 pounds!!! It is almost as expensive as the 2 courses! We ended paying around 400 because we were not aware of all these little details and the worest part of it both of us ending up having a bit upset stomach for some reasons, maybe it was the dessert or sth else I am not sure. FYI, just remember don’t order extra and prepare for the extremely expensive service fee.
hidden gem inside the very busy borough market - a fine dining restaurant inside a greengrocer | highly anticipated restaurant that delivered, plus more - fresh, seasonal ingredients + innovative, unexpected flavour combinations that totally worked 😋 simply delicious!
Wonderful food... Unique tasting experience each day... No menu just the skills of an amazing chef. Inside the fruit and veg stand in Borough Market is an amazing restaurant in the outdoors but inside the market overall. Lovely warm heaters and blankets on each chair but it still feels very cosy. The plates, the glasses, the cutlery all unique and beautiful. Heavy little bowls all warm and lovingly filled with beautiful for creations. One of the most amazing meals we've ever had and the service was really attentive, especially Theodor a charming Bulgarian waiter.....
We had the tasting menu. The food was brilliant, all the way through the menu with a four or five absolute stunners and the white chocolate and rhubarb pudding was amazing. The staff were brilliant we were lucky enough to be seated in front of the chef’s station, they were really engaging and it was great to see them at work.
There for a friend’s birthday celebration and the food is mindblowing - original, unexpected combination of flavours yet they make sense and the plates give you a melt-in-your-mouth satisfaction. Ingredients are so fresh, and the portion is just about right. Also top notch quality of service. All in all a 10/10 dining experience.
Great and tasty food, friendly service under railroads at borough market. My 10 year old son was also well taken care of, ate the tasting menu and liked it very much. He was able to visit the kitchen to greet the chef, it was an important moment for him.
The menu features a range of seasonal dishes that showcase fresh, local ingredients. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, with a charming rustic decor. All praise to the attentive service and friendly staff, who are knowledgeable about the menu and wine pairings.
Overall, if you're looking for a delicious meal in a welcoming setting, Turnips Restaurant in Borough Market, London is worth considering.
