Okasan, meaning Mother in Japanese, is a bijou restaurant on the fashionable Portobello Road in W10. A yearning for a plate of sashimi, tempura and some dumplings drew me in to have a final treat before the rigours of co-running my own food business set in after a brief and well deserved break.

My companion, a lover of Japanese salad dressings ordered a simple salad, chicken karaage, deep fried chicken and ginger with a spicy mayonnaise and we agreed on a delicate Pinot Girgot blush, a Sospiro priced at £17.00.

The salad arrived first and the dressing was so good I had to beg the waitress to tell us what the ingredients were. The chef duly obliged. It was a mix of vinegar, peanuts, sugar, apple juice, water, salt, vegetable oil, sesame seeds and soy sauce. Knowing what is in your food doesn't mean you can recreate the same taste, but I'm going to give it a damned good try. It was simply sensational.

Next came the steamed and pan fried dumplings; little golden nuggets of yumminess. My sashimi was spankingly fresh and served with the usual wasabi and the thin slivers of ginger had the perfect tartness to marry with the oily fish. If I had a little gripe it was that there was no daikon, the shredded Japanese radish (or mooli) that has a lovely crunch to it and nearly always accompanies it.

The deep fried chicken that had been marinated in soy and ginger was delicious and the spicy mayo packed a punch. I don't recall ever seeing mayo on a Japanese menu before, (this was mayo mixed with chili sauce) but it worked.

The wine, ice cold and very pleasant quaffing vino to boot slipped down all too easily.

Being a greedy git I then ordered some prawn tempura, the batter of which was light as a feather and a crispy, heavenly coating for the juicy king prawns inside.

A double espresso later and the bill came to £60. Japanese food is never cheap (especially when you think of the price of sashimi grade fish which only lasts a day at most) but the flavours, the delicacy, the quality of a good Japanese experience is well worth the price in my book and that's exactly what we had. I'm already looking forward to the next visit.

We very much enjoyed our lunch today. My husband had katsu curry, and I had the sushi mix. I also had duck spring rolls, you need those in your life.

Had a really lovely time here - reasonably price and tasty, as well as having plenty of vegetarian options. Perfect cure to mine and my friends hangover. Would go again and recommend as a low cost option for people visiting notting hill. I had the veggie gyoza tantanmen, and my friend had the chicken.

Awesome restaurant ! The food is just delicious and everything is fresh. Large choice of meals (my gyoza ramen soup was very tasty). Best quality/price because there was a lot of noodles in the soup.

Lovely little place. We went at 6pm on a Saturday evening and it was quiet. We have sushi regularly and this was excellent. Great quality and beautifully presented. Lots of choice. Service friendly but could've been more engaged. Will definitely return when next in London

Very nice pleace to eat. Fresh food and good drinks. The food price was fairly cheap if we compare with other restaurants. I do not like the services charge as I feel they're forcing me to give a tip but on this occasion, that 12% service charge was very well deserved.

First the atmosphere is great, we sat outside and there’s a great murmur of people around from the terraces with some background music from the place next to this restaurant (ok, this is not up to them, but it helps the vibe). Then both the waiters were very friendly and efficient! Great with recommendations too. Then the best part was, obviously, the food! Fish had a great texture and flavour.

We stopped by for a mid afternoon snack (rather than fast food or a bag of chips) and was pleasantly surprised by the value for money and great taste. 4 plates of sushi came in at £24 and the girl who served us was friendly with a nice smile. The only small criticism was that whilst we given soya sauce for the sushi there wasn’t any ginger or wasabi. We didn’t ask as we were busy talking and enjoying people watching but it wasn’t offered. Small thing though. Recommend the tempura prawn maki roll. Good value and tasty.

Favourite local joint. Very low key, wholesome, tasty experience. Staff are always attentive and quick and food is always fresh and incredible value for money. Go for roast duck rice or the salmon teriyaki don.

Great sushi with friendly staff. They were happy to do mine as uramaki instead of temaki which is their standard. I got the crispy duck and cucumber and the duck was actually nice and crispy. Around £6 for 6 pieces

Okasan is so delicious!!! I had the fried soft shell crab, salmon & avo maki, crunchy prawn roll and homemade ginger tea- all the ingredients were so fresh and flavourful. The family who runs it were very nice and you can eat outside. I’d say it’s really affordable as well. Will definitely be back!
