The BB is a magical place. Having been back many a time for major crepe consumption and Friday night jazz, this was the obvious choice for my 30th birthday party. Sammy was really accommodating and made sure my night was full of fantastic food and a great atmosphere. Thank you to you and your BB ladies!! Xx

Shamazing...great especially on a Sunday when your feeling lazy and in need of some comfort. A little sweet and a little savoury...or why not even have a bit of both. One of my favourite spots in Merton.

Like most restaurants in Merton Abbey Mills, the Belgian Brasserie is a small, unassuming shack. The kind of shack that looks unfit to survive the next thunderstorm, and yet manages to make it through, every single time. Once you walk in, its character becomes apparent: the Brasserie’s warm and cosy atmosphere, and its shabby chic interiors, are no doubt a part of its appeal. Tables are deliciously mismatched; the chairs are dainty as you’d expect from a fairytale home. The ceiling lamp, made with tablespoons and coffee cups, is the best touch of makeshift elegance, worthy of a stylish upcycling Pinterest board. The first thing to strike visitors, though, is the smell: a divine, intense smell of crepe batter that instantly transports you to Brittany’s small seaside villages (or to the streets or Bruxelles. Or the market stalls of Paris. Anything but South Wimbledon will do).

The crepes on the savoury menu are an interesting fusion between the classic French-inspired batter and a choice of unusual fillings, more akin to English breakfasts than to continental lunches. You can have each dish made as a crepe, waffle or bagel, and gluten-free, lactose-free and low fat options are also available. I recommend that you go in hungry, and order a double savoury crepe, or a bagel and a sweet crepe; either option will cost between £7 and £10 (excluding drinks). If you’re a light eater, or have a lower budget, go for a single crepe or bagel, excellent in both taste and value for money.

My go-to filling, the favourite I never betrayed, is smoked salmon, cream cheese, lemon and spinach. I love how the combination of three delicate flavours and a sprinkle of lemon juice results in a glorious, distinctive taste. This is the best crepe I ever had; one I see myself try to recreate at home, only to realise that no love can be as perfect and pure as the first.

As for the dessert menu, I tried and enjoyed the classic belgian chocolate crepe, and felt tempted by almost everything else on the list. The alcoholic crepes, advertised as “specials” since my very first visit, are my forbidden dream. The mere existence of sweet fillings with Cointreau, Amaretto and Bailey’s is conclusive proof that crepe heaven exists.

Much as I hate saying it, the service is the Belgian Brasserie’s only weak spot. Every single staff member I met is absolutely lovely – but the word “single” is key here. Very often, there’s only one person cooking and serving food, and the four hobs in the kitchen are hardly enough to meet demand at busy times. On good days, you can expect to wait a reasonable 15 – 20 minutes; on less glorious days, you may have to allow up to 45 minutes. Speaking with the owner, I learnt that they’re doing their best to improve; spotting two people behind the counter, or getting your crepes within fifteen minutes, is more of a reality now than ever before. So don’t let speed (or the lack of it) put you off: once the food lands on your table, you’ll find that it’s worth every single second of your wait.

There aren’t many places that do bagels these days, but if you fancy one here’s a place to visit. The bagel was nicely soft and the bacon was cooked properly, neither undercooked nor overly done. Weekday mornings tend to be quite quiet in this area and the service is normally very good. I took a photo of the menu for the people reading this review and wanting to know what’s being served.

Really good food, quirky menu, good ambience and attentive service. I had a limencello and mascapone crepe and my friend a bagel. We drunk fresh lemonade and also slow gin. We were exceptionally happy with our food and drinks, they were full of flavour and inventive. The crepe could have been improved by being a little lighter but it was still enjoyable and very reasonable for the price. The star of the show was my slow gin presented to me as a little tasting experience! First try the gin alone, divine. Then try the gin with spices. Then the peel, amazing! Finally add your tonic. Wow. So tasty and totally unexpected! It absolutely does have a lovely ambiance, a lovely vintage/rustic vibe and I expect it is a delightful place for weddings and events. I adore all the vintage touches and the relaxed atmosphere.

Funky little breakfast spot with a boozy twist. My partner and I were staying across the street while on vacation and decided to stop by for breakfast as it was close by. Great choice! Very small shop but very creative food that tasted amazing. Reasonably priced too, at least in comparison to what we are used to back in Canada. Very friendly staff as well. Loved this place!

We had a private event here for our belated wedding reception. Only 16 people for a sit down meal which was perfect for the size of the place. Food was great and the whole event was super reasonable. They were also able to accommodate the vegans and gluten free in the party. It’s such a cute venue at night with all the fairy lights. Have also been several times for brunch and the savoury crepes are to die for!

This is an absolutely lovely place hidden away in a collection of artisanal small businesses in an area formerly occupied by a water mill. The food was speedily delivered, authentically Belgian and absolutely delicious. The owner, an engineer, was there and could not have been more solicitous and helpful. We loved it and recommend the place highly for breakfast, brunch or dinner.

What a brilliant place. The food, crepes and waffles, are well cooked and very tasty. I can recommend the camembert, walnut, spinach and red currant crepe and the cheese and ham. A grand selection of Belgian beers and cocktails to accompany the food and the best selection of music to eat by. If you are as old as me you will appreciate a journey through your wilder days. They have live music and open mic sessions too! A great place for lunch and you can hire it out for events too.

Very quaint Belgian waffle House. Banana and chocolate was good. Nice coffee too. May go back for a cocktail as they looked pretty good too.

Great food! Really interesting flavour combinations for a breakfast. Nice little place to eat in, shame there are quite a few flies flying about.
