Never knew central london would have such a pocket friendly place. This place has great vibe and always busy. The quality and quantity are both amazing.

Bea Vo’s Deep South dive, Stax Diner, will celebrate its upcoming relaunch by giving away free cheeseburgers to the first 200 customers visiting the Kingly Court eatery just off Carnaby Street from noon on Thursday 7 December. The Stax Cheeseburger (£8.95) features 28-day dry aged pedigreed Sussex beef on an organic buttery soft bun with grilled onion, tomato, lettuce, mayo and choose of cheese (American, mild or mature Cheddar, Stilton or Monterey Jack). The burgers will be offered on a first come/first serve basis.

The Stax cheeseburger was good, fries were fat and hand chopped which I liked. I especially enjoyed the popcorn shrimps, they'd be the main reason why I'd go back! I also tried the cookies and cream milkshake which was also good, but I've had better.

There aren't many places in london that serve halal beef, but they do here!😍Fast service, cosy place. The burger is quite large, I found that the buns were too thick and extremely buttery- the butter actually brought the whole burger down, but I liked that you could choose the type of cheese, fries and mojitos were average and prices were decent.

Good food as always! I got the chicken and waffles, and I must say that the chicken is one of the best I've ever had. Unfortunately the waffle was a bit too soggy, I would have enjoyed it much more if they were a bit harder and fresher, but I still enjoyed the meal!! The mojito's there were perfect too!

So went there for a quick snack and by snack I mean a fried chicken burger, and it was definitely worth the calories. One of the most crispy fried chicken I ever had in my life. Can't wait to go back and try other options over there

I have already written a post about Stax Diner last year – you can check it out from my previous post here!. So I have made another visit to this American diner place. Nothing much has changed except a few slight changes on the menu. This visit was on a Monday afternoon – it was relatively quiet compared to my last visit, which was on a Sunday. The vibe this time round was way more chilled instead of being all busy and hustling.

Saw mixed reviews for this place. Was quite skeptical about trying it. But I'm sure glad I did. Yes the place is bloody tiny. Yes its cramped. Yes it gets very busy. However, I can understand why! The food is delicious. Personally i'm a big lover of bbq burgers but I hate the fact that the bun gets soggy which means it all falls apart when you try to eat it. Which is why the burger I chose 'bring home the bacon' is very clever indeed. The maple bacon adds that sweet element you get from a bbq sauce without making the burger too wet. They cooked it exactly how we requested it- medium. It was moist and perfect. Will be coming here again for sure! Yasin Hoque

You should be early or else you will have to wait for places to sit. This place is yummy with professional staff that listens to every modification and detail you want in your burger. We had the double stax cheese burger and fries, the best i've had in london so far.

This is THE burger spot. So I've been eating a lot of burgers lately and thought I'd pay a visit to this popular joint in Kingley court in Soho. I advise you to plan your visit before you go since the place is quite small and the queue for a available seat could take more than 45 minutes. It'll be worth the wait though. The service level is high and the burgers taste really good, their fries seems to be really fresh as well. Their mojitos and shakes are a bit overpriced but however tasty. The fact that they serve halal meet makes everything better.

Cons: They serve alcohol. Food bill will usually be expensive

You should try their Stax burger and their chicken and waffles. Boy that's delicious!

The Duffin Sundae.

Actually really not bad. I've had one hit and one miss outing at Stax previously so far and this was the second positive visit. This dessert definitely helped.

Buttermilk, donuts, muffins, chocolate, fudge. What else do you need? Thankfully it's not annoyingly sweet but more of a salty sweet, which is soooo much more addictive. Nice work Stax (and thanks for singing happy birthday too, that went down well). 😊

Superb meal, great service, small cosy restaurant, they even have specials! I advise you to read the full menu, check their Twitter feed and eat nothing for a couple of days before you go.
If burgers are your thing, if you like a big stack and a shake, this place is for you.
I loved the onion rings too.

Love. Love. Love. Love. Love.
Haaa! Went on Valentine's Day too! Lol
Nah,, in all seriousness they've got proper nice food!
I got the regular cheeseburger popcorn shrimp Nd regular fries with virgin mojitos.. LOVED IT!
In all fairness the meat was well cooked well seasoned.. But thinking back right now I would've asked for more cheese.. But all in all I can't complain loved it!
Nd the fact that everything was حلال was such a plus 'cause we could've chose from what we wanted even their 'bacon' was halal beef lool
We didn't have much time left to check out there shakes,, to be fair we left late (last ones as they clean up) 😭
The service was good too.. Staff were attentive Nd the cute lady was so helpful

** minor off,, we thought the dinner would be much larger than expected? It's actually very small when we first entered.. But later on when you sit,, eat,, chill,, you don't mind it**

The vibe this time round was way more chilled instead of being all busy and hustling. One of the main reasons for this re-visit is for a specific dish. If I remember correctly, this item was on the ‘special menu’ board which is off the regular menu. Now it is on the menu listed as ‘secret menu’ and after being revealed what the 'secret' is, I couldn't be any more delighted that it is precisely what I came back for - it is something that had me hooked ever since I last saw it on the 'special menu' board a year ago. So this big secret is a waffle burger stack consisting of beef then chicken, and then beef again.

Went with a colleague as she wanted good halal burgers. The original plan was for chinese buffet as we were in Soho but this place came up. It's good old fashioned american style burger.
I ordered blue cheese burger. It was fantastic, the fries were really crispy and the presentation of the food was impressive. I had the waffles after, they were 100% great. Will bring the missus here soon.

A hippy Southern American-style diner that caters with halal meat. They serve nice juicy burgers and also many other American classics. We tried the Chicken & Waffle but sadly on our visit, it wasn't impressive. We've heard many good reviews and recommendations on its Chicken & Waffle but I'm afraid I find it a bit disappointing. It was a bit dry and overcooked instead of being fragant and succulent. Although the waffle had good flavors, it lacked texture. It was a bit of a shame really. But at least there's some nice maple syrup to indulge with.

Great place for halal burgers in Kingly Court! Small place so get there early without having to queue. Fries were ok but tasted really nice with ketchup and their homemade hot sauce which was a nice salsa sauce.

I wanted a spicy burger but their insanity burger had fried onion rings which is a bit much for a small burger tummy like me. So I shared a cheeseburger and poured their homemade hot sauce on mine and it was fantastic! Yummy! Would definitely come again when craving for a juicy burger.

Someone ordered chicken and waffles and I tried the waffles (am not a fan of chicken) and it was delish! Would definitely just order their waffles if possible. Yum yum yum yummyyyy

We were craving burgers after a long day shopping and I remembered seeing this place on Zomato.
It was really easy to find on the first floor of Kingly Court and the place itself is amazing. The Kingly Court has a variety of restaurants in an indoor/outdoor kind of setup. We sat by the bar so we could enjoy the view.
The diner itself isn't that big. We luckily came early cause about 10 minutes later, it started to pack up and queues started to form.
We ordered the Stax Cheeseburger and the Gilded Chickadee accompanied by Virgin Mojitos and Cajun Fries. The Mojitos were nice and fresh but they could have done with a bit more lemon flavor.
The burgers were nice and big. The cheeseburger tasted good. The Gilded Chickadee looked amazing and the slaw inside it was delicious.
The star of the show, I believe, were the fries. The thickness and crispness was perfect. I rarely enjoy fries on their own but these were amazing! And the seasoning was good and was added enough to cover the fries but not overpower them. Delicious.
Overall, it's a nice place for dinner and the prices were reasonable.

Came here to try out the famous American Chicken & waffles. The dish was good though slightly sweet for my tastebuds so I added a little tabasco. A very quirky place off of Carnaby Street and is often filled up quickly. I think I take a friend with me next time and will definitely try out their burgers as they looked awesome!

This diner was a bit smaller than I imagined so it wouldn't be a place you would want to go to with a large group. The chicken and waffle was the standout dish of the night and I would highly recommend it. The burgers were ok, not my favourite but they were not bad by any means.

This was a hearty meal if ever there was one and I urge you not to come here unless you are starving but if you are, then you will be in for a treat! As with just about everywhere these days, this operates a no reservations policy and even at just 6pm on a Monday, the 3 of us still had to wait half an hour for a table but the good news was that rather than queuing, they take your number and call you when your table is ready and luckily for us, it only took around twenty minutes.

Each dish on the menu sound solid but my eye were immediately drawn to both the popcorn shrimp in brioche bread or the butterilk fried chicken waffles. After much deliberation, I went with the former and I must say, the crispy shrimp, a perfect accompanying sauce and the soft bread worked an absolute dream together. No starters needed and just one family size portion of Stax fries to share between three (and even half of that got left!)

They have a tempting range of milkshakes and non alcoholic drinks but fully aware of how filling the main courses are going to be, I stuck to sparkling water and needdless to say, no one could even contemplate dessert!

Considering their no reservations policy, they were quitee good about not ruhing us at all and provided a fiendly un-intrusive service, although at the end of the night, it wasn't quite clear to us whether we were expected to go up to pay at the counter or simply whether they were being a little slow to the table.

As 3 ladies feeling stuffed to the brim, we all commented that this would be a restaurant to return to with the men and whilst it's certainly not the healthiest food in town, it certainly gives you a great flavour of deep South classics.

We were quite lucky that there was an empty table when we got to the restaurant seeing as it was really busy.

Ordered the spicy hot chickadee, Cajun fries and popcorn shrimp bites. All of them were amazing! Wished the chickadee was a bit more spicy but that's just because I love spicy food!

Atmosphere was great and the price was quite fair. Overall it was a very enjoyable meal.

When we went, it was very busy, but worth the wait. There is a real buzz about the place, a fun, relaxed vibe. The food was exceptional. Amazing burger, cooked to order and a choice of cheeses, and the best chips I've ever had. A great list of drinks. Milkshake absolutely delicious. Good price too.

And my dinner companion ordered from a secret menu the monstrous Frankenburger ... Fried chicken, waffles, bun and burger welded together. Appparent,y delicious!

Stax Diner is a halal gourmet burger restaurant located in Kingly Court. The venue is very rustic looking & considerably small, which is a shame considering its huge popularity. The food is divine & that is epitomised by the long queues of burger aficionados. The service is warm & welcoming, but they definitely need to invest in a bigger venue, as the cramped conditions does diminish the overall experience.

I've written at least twice about the proliferation of "style over substance" gourmet burger bars that have popped up all over London over the past couple of years. They seem designed purely with the dual purpose of a) giving haloodie bloggers everywhere something to gush about and take pictures of and b) convince Muslims with more money than taste buds to part with their hard earned in the name of treating their families (to things like obesity and heart disease). You can probably tell that I'm not impressed but as I'm not a) a haloodie or b) have any kids to fatten up I guess I'm not really the target market for these places anyway. So it was with great trepidation that I sat down at Stax this evening. My initial expectation was to be greeted with something I had already had before, the identikit sandwich accompanied with the inevitable Ferrero milkshake, but this did start to change pretty soon after. I think the main difference I found was that this wasn't a place designed for and marketed to Muslims, but a burger restaurant that happened to serve Halal meat. That's significant in a world where Islam is increasingly being pimped out as a brand to be traded on and commoditised, as it means a seller has to focus on making a product universally good instead of just good enough to sell to Muslims who have no other options. Take for example how the server asked us how we wanted our meat cooked - something unheard of in other so called gourmet burger joints. That said, I did go for the medium so I suppose I'm hardly adventurous. But anyway, food. It was good. Really good. I went for a double Insanity (you can pick up to five patties in your bun), which was supposed to be hot but wasn't really. But I didn't mind because the burger was really good (I may have mentioned that already). It was also really unhealthy - I don't think I've ever seen a burger dripping as much fat as the one I received today. But I didn't care because it was so good. Oh and I think we got some chips and a milkshake but I don't really remember much past the cow-in-a-bun.Oh and I have to talk about the Stax Challenge: a five patty cheese burger with a family portion of chips and super sized milkshake is presented to the challenger, who is then timed to see how long they take to finish it all. There's even a hall of fame/shame - I was quite surprised at how long the list of failures were, until I saw how easily a colleague failed at his. I'll try it one day maybe.Anyway if you haven't already figured it out, I loved this place and thoroughly recommend it, and am even happy to gush about it here on my blog. Be warned though: the place couldn't have had more than 30 or so covers and doesn't take bookings so make sure you plan ahead. Other than that I'm already planning my next visit.

My cousin and I went to Stax for the Chicken and waffle (obviously).... And I will say it was good! The chicken was moist and soft to cut, the coating did separate from it a bit but that was still delicious, it wasn't as crispy as i was expecting but as i said ...it still tasted good. Then you have the syrup and waffle... Hmmm hmmm lol it was good too. Don't get me wrong though, it is not as good as chicken and waffle in america but its the best one I have had in London. Plus they have some american drinks like kool-aid (reminds me of my childhood in Dallas) but I didn't try it so def next time....and they had a special soda of the day which was fanta grape :) also i tried my cousin's cajun fries which were a bit dry so not so good. Its a small place and queues formed twice while we were there. So considering we had two mains, one drink, one milkshake and a side it came up to about £20+ each which isn't too bad. Its just the size of the place that let it down a bit...considering a few window seats were in front of an open window which made us feel a bit cold....but we were able to move. So thumbs up...next time trying their burgers

So the evening didn’t go as planned. Initially, our first choice was Pitt Cue Co, which I was really looking forward to, but the wait time was 50 whole minutes! So my dinner date (AKBoogie) and I decided to wonder somewhere else instead.
Feeling the urge to stay with the burger theme, we stumbled upon STAX.
This diner is just off Carnaby Street, in the beautiful Kingly court. It’s located on the first floor and is amongst the hub of cool restaurants.
The place was fairly busy from the get go and we were promptly seated by the waitress at a window, where we could enjoy the pretty fairy lights outside.
We ordered our drinks and started looking at the menu. When we thought we had decided on our burgers, the waiter came along and highlighted the Special. Naturally we both chose to try the Christmas themed ‘Camemburger’. I love Camembert cheese, cranberry sauce and with a hint of chilli, this was a MUST!
After a good natter, our drinks arrived. Alexandra settled for a Peanut Butter, whipped cream, cherry milkshake. This looked delicious she enjoyed it a lot (minus the whipped cream). I chose an Arnold Palmer, a refreshing concoction consisting of half lemonade and half sweet tea. Very yummy.
Our burgers came next and they looked really tasty. My first bite and I could taste the cheese, mmm. Then the cranberries kicked in. Disappointingly, I couldn’t really taste the medium rare beef patty itself. As the burger was super packed, all the ingredients seem to merge together and the centre was a little too soft for my liking.
The burger is pretty filling, so we ordered a dessert to share and decided to try the ‘The Dough-bro’, as recommended by the waitress. After what seemed like a lifetime, the dessert came along and I have to say, it was a tiny portion presented in a little paper cup, so if you really like your brownies- get two portions!
Digging in, the fudge brownie doughnut, paired with Butterscotch sauce and vanilla Ice cream did not disappoint me. Sweet, moist and warm, this was satisfying.
I’d really like to head back to this place in the near future, but not for the burgers. The Cajun Onion Blossom and a portion of fried chicken on another table caught my eye. It looked very attractive!
Overall, the restaurant is a good place to go if you like a buzzing environment. The waiters are pleasant and helpful, though the delivery of food is slow.
Bon appétit!

I've sampled a lot of burgers in the city, some good some rather average. However, this was by far the best until now. The service was great too, with very friendly staff. The Halal: It’s the attention to detail and quality which is unique… The meat served at Stax is organic, free-range beef sourced from pedigree Sussex cattle and supplied by Abraham natural produce. The meat is all stunned halal and no pork is served on the premises although alcohol is.

The Place: Finally a decent halal burger joint that you don’t have to travel to outer suburbia for! Stax diner opened earlier this year and business seems finger lickin’ good. The restaurant is the brainchild of Bea (of Bloomsbury) – whose scrumptious cupcakes are well known. The menu and storyboard are inspired by her childhood memories of the Deep South, long road trips and tasty food breaks. Stax can be found on the first floor of buzzing Kingly Court on Carnaby street. Decor is understated and casual: old vinyl records, stools and steel pendant lighting.

The Food: The ‘must-have’ item stated on the menu was the Cajun onion blossom: essentially a deep-fried onion cut into a floral shape. It was pretty tricky to eat in any dignified manner and after a few minutes of attempting neat dissection I gave up and got stuck in with my fingers! I really don’t want to know how many calories were consumed but it was the most gluttonous thing I’ve eaten in a while!

For mains everyone I could see was ordering the halal organic beef burgers, most opting for the novel beef bacon option. The burger patty itself was cooked and seasoned very well. The beef bacon was quite salty and overpowering but I’m informed by frequent visitors that this is not usually the case.

Although I haven’t tried them, I’ve heard very good things about the Cajun popcorn shrimp and the buttermilk battered chicken on waffles. The brunch menu looks like it would be worth a visit too!

Of course no American diner is complete without the right drinks and Stax has milkshakes, ice cream floats and root beer! They’ve thought of everything except a good old fashioned juke box!

The Price: Burgers are around £8-10 each. So you’re looking at around £20-25 per head when you factor in starters, sides and drinks.

The Verdict: Stax is a sound choice if you’re looking for good quality halal meat in a Central London location. The ambience is fun and relaxed so it’s great in a group of friends. The only downside was that the kitchen was quite small for a busy restaurant so expect a little wait- and try not to stuff yourself on addictive onion blossom while you do!

Stax

What: American Diner

Where: Kingly Court, Carnaby St

Value: £15 pp

Food Review: Recently opened, this place does burgers during the day and brunch most mornings. As i went for brunch i ordered blueberry pancakes and chicken and waffles. I also wanted to order the maple beef bacon but this had run out. Upon the drinks menu was overpriced coffee and tea and orange juice. This meant only the orange juice would be worth it. The large orange juice arrived in a kitch jug (which handles), alongside the chicken placed upon waffles witha side of maple syrup and bluberry pancakes with a side of cream and more maple syrup. The meal was great and very american diner style but it did not stand out from the crowd.

Settings Review: Kingly court is nestled in on the side of carnaby street, and stax is placed above above overlooking the restaurants below. The restaurant itself is not very big and has a array of seating. As it does get full up easily, it pays to come early.

Positives: good hearty american food, halal

Negatives: overpriced drinks, lack of seating

3 words: tasty, american, quirky

Chicken & Waffles is an amazing dish of perfectly fried chicken over a waffle, with maple syrup!

The fries are the best I've ever had...

From the outside you would be hard convinced that this Dinner is a restaurant that uses and serves Halal meat across all its burgers. I'm just going to jump straight into this - No talk about decor, okay a little, its small but cosy, I actually decided to sit outside by the window sill table so didn't really take much in, why.. because of the awesomeness of the burger i was about to eat.

I came here on a wednesday evening with a friend, i knew i wanted a burger plain and simple. I went for a Stax Burger - 28 days dry aged beef on a Brioche Bun, with grilled Onions, Tomato, Lettuce and Mayo with added onions and beef bacon - and boy, beef bacon did i just discover one of my new favorites things in the world?

This burger was epic, the moment I bit into it it was pure food porn, the taste and texture was just great and the beef bacon just really enhanced the overall taste and experience. I made every bite count and last.

We also ordered a side of chips which was more than enough for 2 people.

The service was great, our waiter was so nice and friendly and explained the menu to us in depth (my friend needed help with deciding on what cheese to get!)

Price wise, we are in the heart of the west end, but i am very happy to pay £10 for a truly awesome burger.

I have been three times, yes, three times to Stax in just under 2 weeks. Why? I love burgers, I love deep fried chicken and I love this place! The best, best in town.

The burgers are simply the messiest, crumbliest, juiciest,  most sensational burgers in London. The chicken, well it was hard to not go for a burger on my third trip, but the chicken and waffles was possibly as good, if not even better! Crispy, spiced and seasoned batter, with light, succulent chicken breast concealed within. I will be back for a 4th visit very, very soon!

Bea Vo is best known for her ongoing Bea's of Bloomsbury success but she also built up quite a following with her weekend diner in the Maltby St Market area. Those still mourning the loss of that outpost should promptly make their way over to Kingly Court where Bea has introduced a little bit of 1960s charm in the form of Stax Diner.

From weekend hangover brunch to late night sustenance, Stax has you covered at all times of the day. We arrived just as last orders were being taken, and ordered a round of burgers & fries, including The Big Stax (28 dry-aged Pedigreed Sussex Beef on Balthazar Brioche with Spicey Comeback Sauce, Maple Glazed Beef Bacon, Caramelized Onion and a choice of cheese for £10.95 - you can make it a Double or Triple Stax if you think that's not enough).

Unexpected high demand on their first day of trading meant several tempting items weren't available, so a return trip is definitely in order. The Stax Po'Boy with cajun spiced popcorn shrimp on brioche and an eye catching Cajun Onion Blossom are on my to-eat list, along with The Dough-Bro - a brownie-doughnut hybrid for dessert.

We did manage to get hold of some superb battered pickles, and a tasty basket of apple poppyseed coleslaw to go with the "boardwalk" fries.

We left space for a couple of decadent Duffin Sundaes - Bea's famous buttermilk and nutmeg duffin (doughnut vs muffin) with French Vanilla Ice Cream, Fudge & Butterscotch Sauce, Whipped Cream and Cherries, cutely served in teacups. Starbucks have controversially recently trademarked "The Duffin" which Bea came up with, but it seems they have no plans to stop her selling them (Much ado about Duffin?). Otherwise she might have to start calling it a Muffnut, and noone wants that.

As well as coming back for Onion Blossoms and some boozy Milkshakes / Ice Cream Floats, I also need to get along for a Stax brunch which is now up and running every Sat-Sun from 8am til 2pm. Stax Wild Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes, Balthazar Brioche French Toast with Caramelized Bananas and Walnuts, and Buttermilk Marinated Fried Chicken and Waffles can all be washed down with bottomless Square Mile coffee. See you there!

Limited menu, but the available items were really good. The service was great. We enjoyed the Burger but the chicken and waffles were average.

Second time I've been here with my daughter and they have not let us down. Portion meal sizes are just right. Shame they did not have the homemade Lemonade. But beside that the Root beer hit the spot. Friendly and helpful staff👍🏾💯 let me know what you think??

Amazing burgers. But the chicken and waffles is where it's at. The nicest fried chicken I've ever eaten, coupled with waffles and maple syrup. Sounds so wrong tastes so good. Great service as well.

Great experience! I was there for a late lunch and there was clear social distancing based on where everyone was seated. Chris was an excellent server! Very friendly, helpful and welcoming. Price was decent for the meal, since it is the West End. The cheesy chips were tasty and they aren't stingy with the cheese.

So I've been to Stax Diner before, a few years ago, and enjoyed it then. This time, I happened upon it (always get confused looking for Kingly Court) and thought it'd be great to revisit. This is the second day of second lockdown ending so my friend and I spent the evening shopping and were famished by the time we were done. We entered Stax and were greeted by a friendly staff member who reminded us we needed to wear the mask whilst waiting for a table. We joked about that because there were tables available and no queue, so we were shown to our seat. Stax is a tiny diner - pre-COVID days, I'm sure I've seen them squeeze in about 25-30 patrons but now they've put out tables mostly for couples or small groups of 4. Because of Covid (or possibly because it was 9pm and they were due to close kitchen at 10pm), we were given a reduced menu with 2-3 choices for meat or chicken burgers and a couple of sides and starter options. The meat and chicken is all halal and they have vegan/vegetarian options too. We had nachos to start with, 2 for £8 on drinks so we had a virgin strawberry mojito and the elderbubble and for mains, I went for the chicken burger with cajun fries and my friend had the stax burger with regular fries. Everything came within 15mins which was great as we were starving and we demolished the meal. The nachos were delightful for a starter - I do really enjoy nachos and was pleased to see that it came with fresh guacamole, salsa, cheese sauce (none of that melted cheddar rubbish) as well as fried beans and sour cream and garnished with chillis and spring onion. Thoroughly enjoyed that and saved some of the cheesier nachos to put into my burger. My buttermilk chicken burger was okay - only had some mayo and some lettuce and they stacked 2 huge bits of crispy chicken between a brioche bun. I really felt that some sort of sauce would have taken it to another level so I added more mayo and some of the guac and cheese from the nachos. Cajun fries were crispy and veryyyy well seasoned, right down to the last chip. Got a bit salty towards the end but, by then, I was already full and just didn't want good fries to go to waste. My elderbubble mocktail was fantastically tart, refreshing and just how I like it. The waitress we had was friendly and was happy to accommodate us and the premises were in line with government guidelines so they had screens between tables and social distancing even in the small place that it is. Defo a good spot to hit when in the locality as its in the middle of a vibrant area.

Full of character and great music - the staff are accommodating and friendly. To top it all off, the ‘Soul food’ is delicious and very good quality! Will definitely be returning the next time we are in London.
