Reviews Capote Y Toros

Spanish food won't be the same again (in London). We stumbled upon this place after dropping off a friend back to hammersmith and saw a huge crowd amongst the three cambio de tercio restaurants. As Capote Y Toros was the only one with a table left (not reserved) we quickly claimed the seating. Service was excellent as the waiter took time to explain each dish out carefully and recommended certain dishes such as the anchovies and the charcuterie selection which were the absolute highlights of the evening. The tortilla was average and to our surprise, very few tables ordered the pork cheeks- which we thought was another outstanding dish. The tiny spheres of bread are so deceiving in portion control as we found ourselves constantly having to request for a new basket to help mop up the sauces left from each of the tapas dishes.

It was a real treat visiting capote y toros however the wallet did suffer heavy damage as it ended up totalling around 120 pounds (inclusive of drinks which I must say took the brunt of the damage)

Now trying to imagine what the best of spain has to offer when I get the chance to visit!

Challenge of the day, not get drunk or severely tipsy at Capote y Toros. Before you think that's easy, here are the obstacles to jump through: over 40 varieties of sherry and the finest ham in the world, acorn fed Iberico bellota ham.

As usual for the Cambio de Tercio Group, there was little doubt about the quality of food and innovations in recipes. And with creativity comes risk, so not everything was suited for everyone’s taste. For me, I have to come back, purely because I don’t know where to find another duck liver carpaccio. But on my next visit, I’ll learn to stick to the Spanish reds, the usual 5J bellota jamon and skip the venison. And if, just if, they could slip the baby eels from Tendido Cero across the road...

Iberico pork is one of the strongest reasons I now think Spanish food is the most enjoyable cuisine in the world and these pork cheeks were grrrrreat.

I am a regular reader of The London Foodie and have written a few guest update reviews for the site. As a result, I was invited to join Luiz at the press opening of Capote y Toros, a new sherry and ham bar by Abel Lusa, the owner of Cambio de Tercios and Tendido Cero. I found Capote y Toros easily. It is located in South Kensington, a short walk from Earls Court Tube Station. I arrived just as Mr. London Foodie himself and we entered as the very first guests of the evening. The place was small but well decorated to go with the name. Capote y Toros translates to Cape and Bulls and the walls were covered with images of bullfighting. We were immediately served a Fino, a very dry sherry, that was complemented by salted almonds and olives. We were seated in the bar stools just under the impressive display of over 100 types of sherry that the bar has on offer. It is the largest sherry bar in London and possibly the world; even Spain doesn't have one as impressive! Soon after we tasted the de

Although stylish, the tables and chairs were suitably plain so as not to detract from the deep red walls covered in old photographs, bullfighting memorabilia, a wall of wines and some rustic barrels.

we had our very own in-house entertainment, a slightly tipsy and totally charming Spanish guitarist who humoured me when I tried to congratulate him in my very limited español.

Meat Balls “Palo Cortado Fragrance” from Jerez. Smelled ripely gorgeous. Tender, well seasoned balls. Moist and had this great consistency to them. Delectable tomato based-sauce that did not overwhelm the balls one bit!

I've been bowled over by a real local gem. With new, central London openings showing no sign of abating, it's easy to forget that there's a culinary world outside of W1. With Capote y Toros on their doorstep, the lucky residents of SW5 might rather you did.

The food is authentic Spanish tapas with a so so atmosphere. If your looking for a more creative menu go to its more formal restaurant across the street Cambio de Tercio.

London’s first sherry bar Capoto y Toros (the cape and the bull) is the little sister to the excellent Cambio de Tercio just a couple of doors down. The long, narrow room has a line of tables and a bar at the end, a series of hams hanging from the ceiling and a display of sherries (110 sherries are offered). The use of warm colours for the walls, the pictures of bulls, prints of Spanish scenes and people and the framed matador cape leave you in no doubt which nationality is represented; Spanish guitar music plays in the background.

Five styles of sherry are offered as a flight of tasting glasses, in order from the lightest to the heaviest style: we tried Fino Quinta, Alegria Manzinalla, Delgado Zuleta Amontillado, Oloroso Dry from Gutierrez Colosia, and Palo Cortado from Regente (the exact sherries on the flight vary).

As well as excellent ham from Recebo (£7.50) we tried many of the tapas dishes. Andalucian style gazpacho (£4) was lovely, with deep tomato flavour (remarkably the tomatoes tonight were from an English supplier, though they sometimes use ones from Spain) and well balanced and seasoned (15/20). Salad of goat cheese was served with a particularly nice honey dressing, and featured tomatoes that tasted of tomato, a rare thing indeed in the UK (14/20).

Garlic prawns (£6) were tender, and simply cooked (14/20) and I enjoyed a simple dish of baby anchovies (£4.50) marinated in Palo Cortada vinaigrette (14/20). The Galician octopus (£6.75) with potato and sweet paprika was pleasant, if verging on chewy (12/20), while the casserole of artichokes and mushrooms with manzanilla was the least convincing dish, the vegetables ending up rather mushy (11/20). Salmon tartare with aioli of padron peppers was better, the richness of the aioli nicely balancing the salmon (13/20).

The meal finished appropriately with a Pedro Ximines ice cream with raisins and macadamia nuts (easily 14/20), while I also sampled a mousse of sweet Oloroso sherry with caramelised figs (13/20). Service was excellent and the place was buzzing in the early evening on a mid-week night, just weeks after opening. You do get a real sense of Spain here, and I found the food and atmosphere very appealing.

Delicious Spanish restaurant nested in the heart of South Kensington. Great ambiance with live guitarist roaming through the 3 group of restaurants and amazing staff/service. A little pricey but worth the experience.

Soooo delicious!! Best tapas we’ve ever had. Definitely pricey, but so worth is. My favorites were the tacos with potato on it, the chicken croquettes, and the Spanish tortilla. Will definitely go back if in the area again!

Lovely tapas restaurant not too far from Gloucester Road. Great selection available, including a large variety of seafood, and a somewhat unusual take on Patatas Bravas. Good atmosphere, with a guitarist playing lightly in the background the whole time, and good service. Unfortunately not cheap at around £40pp Inc service but no drinks, although not excessive for the area.

Amazing selection of tapas categorized by vegetarian, vegan, seafood, and meat. Also, gorgeous looking larger meat plates, in a cozy, traditional Spanish atmosphere. I recommend the crunchy fish tacos, ox burger, crispy nigiri, roasted carrot, and patatas bravas

Second time I’ve been to this restaurant in the last couple of months. The food is absolutely fantastic, as is the service. It was a shame though that on my second visit the guitarist didn’t make a stop at our restaurant, as we were told that usually he rotates through all three venues. Either way I can’t recommend this place enough.

We have been coming here for a while. The service is excellent, they make you feel welcome, especially from Eric who helps us find new interesting wines and his attention to detail is outstanding. There is nice live flamenco music most nights, you are never rushed and the food is authentic and fresh.

Not cheap- but it’s in Kensington & Chelsea, isn’t it. Really enjoyed the £8 El Pacto Rioja (175ml) and the beetroot/fig/walnut/cheese/pomegranate salad was incredible! Very good traditional guitarist played for a long set. Online menu is indeed a little awkward given the wine menu’s length, but that’s hardly the end of the world.

Definitively the best Spanish restaurant in London. Great quality ingredients and perfectly elaborated recipes (don't miss the pork cheeks...delicious!). Large selection of sherrys. All served by knowledgeable, attentive and kind staff. A must go.

Of the three (or is it four?) places owned by the same guy on this street it’s Capote Y Toros which stands out as having the best ambience. Yes the obsession with bull fighting comes across as a little strong (imagine an English restaurant in Spain peppered with images of cricket) but its heart is in the right place. The live flamenco guitar adds further depth, as do the genuine and helpful staff. I tried a few sherries here and found the whole experience thoroughly refreshing. We didn’t eat here but we should have done. My Spanish fiancée even gave this place the thumbs up, praise indeed.

This is one of the four Spanish restaurants under the same ownership in a 40 metre stretch of the Old Brompton Road. There are all superb, and Capote Y Toros is the most casual , but with the same quality food , Tapas styles. Good value, excellent service.
