Tombo is a without a doubt a quirky and relaxed poké and matcha bar; which is an excellent addition to the thriving food and drink scene that Fitzrovia now boasts. I tried this latest outpost of the Tombo success story and was whisked away into a dazzling Hello Kitty pop-up world. To be clear, on my visit Hello Kitty took centre stage amongst an authentic Japanese aesthetic featuring imported tea-ware and crockery. Hello Kitty is popping up until 8th October for those keen to indulged their open/well known or secret Hello Kitty love affair!

This summer saw poké established as one of the hottest new food trends in London. Tombo Fitzrovia is clearly bang on-trend and leading the pack with its new opening. An engaging spot to encourage solo or group dining with friends, colleagues or partners. The menu is packed full of options and allows you pick classics or for the more adventurous amongst you to create your own dish. Who doesn't love an interactive dining experience so 'Build Your Own Poké' is a great option.

Not to list off the menu as I highly recommend you head on over to Fitzrovia to sample your own poké bowl but choices include the Classic Poké, which combines Salmon or Tuna with Sesame Soy (gluten free), Spring Onion, Edamame, Sesame Seeds and Nori. The Soho favourite, Kaisen Poké, with Ponzu Citrus Soy, Salmon and Tuna, Edamame, Avocado and Nori.  For those who follow a vegan diet or prefer to eat meat there is the Tombo’s Vegan Special or Teriyaki Chicken Poké served on a bed of Rice or Courgette Noodles. The courgette noodles are textural sound with a satisfying crunch and a healthy alternative base ingredient. The tuna and salmon sashimi we tried was of the highest quality.

I obviously tried the Hello Kitty Poké with salmon on a base of black and white rice, sesame soy sauce, thinly sliced vegetables, edamame and my personal favorite edible flowers. How can you not smile when presented with delicate blooms in your plate. It even came with a souvenir Hello Kitty sauce pot to keep. What is therefore not to love? I was left feeling pleasantly full, the vegetable were crisp and fresh. The rice perfectly cooked and the salmon melt in the mouth.

I was advised by the super helpful team that a trip to the café is simply not complete without sampling one or two of their award-winning matcha teas. I was duly presented with a Hello Kitty Matcha Latte Hot. Hello Kitty had a vibrant green hue, not in the least over-powering, rather delicious and Kitty was smiling back at me! I also tried the Sakura - cherry blossom kukicha to end my meal. A big loose leaf tea fan I would be happy to add that to my collection.

In addition to the matcha lattes and teas, there is an array of delicious matcha desserts to indulge in - from soft serve ice cream and sundaes to Matcha Tarts and Cheesecakes. Back to the Hello Kitty menu we went and we had a delightfully light strawberry and cream dorayaki and hojicha berry sundae.

The freshness of the food and decor speak for themselves. Twinned with excellent service this is a poké spot to take notice of. Matcha fans will be in heaven and those new to the flavours of Poké and Matcha have the perfect springboard in which to discover the unknown.

Love this place - it's quiet and subtle, despite being in bustling Soho. Very fresh, good quality food, and creative matcha desserts. Love the build your own poké, too! Prices are reasonable and sauces are so tasty :)

Just look at these bowls of sunshine and deliciousness! It was really very difficult to whittle it down to one sauce, one ‘mix-in’ and two toppings. I started with a base of courgette noodles and added tuna, avocado (of course), spring onion, sahimi and crispy shallots with a ponzu soy on the side.

I started this round-up sceptical of poke’s appeal. My conclusion is that poke, in London at least, is one of the most overrated and overhyped dishes that I’ve encountered while writing about the capital’s restaurants. But that doesn’t mean it’s without merit.

What on earth is that, you might ask? Having originated in Hawaii, you can think of poké as a kind of 'deconstructed sushi'. Why? Well, generally it involves raw fish, rice, sauces and toppings, all combined in an easy to eat bowl - apparently bowls are the new plates?!. Light and healthy, yet substantial enough to be consumed as a main meal, it fills that middle ground between the previous 'make your own'  options - where your choices were generally limited to salad bowls (think Chop'd or  Vital Ingredient), or the more calorie-laden offerings like Chipotle. Poké bowls have found their niche: they're flavourful, high in protein, and don't feel like "rabbit food", but are still a nutritious option!

My love of matcha is well-documented and I can’t help raving about a place when it does matcha really well. Add to that hot new Hawaiian poké food trend and it’s a match made in heaven (please forgive the terrible pun). Tombo Poké & Matcha Bar in Soho opened in June and it’s already a popular and lively spot.  The two-floor cafe is bright and uplifting with super-friendly staff and decent air-con – perfect for a relaxing refuel in the heart of the city.

Tombo Poké and Matcha Bar is the smaller sister sister cafe to the Tombo Cafe in South Kensington. As the name suggests, it serves up a variety of poké bowls and matcha goodies.

Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to try out their poké bowls when we visited during their opening week. We only managed to try out their matcha desserts.

We had Matcha Soft Serve Ice-Cream and Matcha Monaka...

A great Japanese place serving Hawaiian Poke style meals. Matcha Bar is also a great addition to London's growing matcha scene. Service is quick and friendly while ambience matches authentic Tokyo Cafe style places.

Coming to the food, poke are very refreshingly fresh, full of flavour and goodness.

Fresh poke bowls with nice variety of ingredients to choose from. Like their build your own bowl. Miso soup was not like those watery ones you normally get from other places. Silky tofu and plenty of seaweed in the soup. Green tea ice cream was light. Comfy seating downstairs. Nice escape from the busy streets around Oxford Circus.

Now this is a great poke! Tasty, fresh and yummy 😋 How cute are the desserts! I would eat this every day if they delivered to me. Wheelchair access: small step to get in and doorway is on the narrow side. There are only a few tables on the ground floor, but still definitely worth a visit.

Stylish resturant and cosy at the same time. Lovely menu, I had the classic Pokē with salmon. The ingredients were very fresh and the dish was delicious! To drink I had the Matcha Juice (Apple and ginger) It was very refreshing, I'd recommend it if you want something cooling on a hot day! Finally I had the Matcha Soft serve in a cone! Sometimes I find Matcha ice cream too rich, but this was the perfect amount or richness and creaminess! Highly recommended!

So far have only had the desserts but they were all delicious, personally for me have just the right amount of matchaness. It also has a lovely clean and modern design inside and more seating downstairs. Fairly reasonable prices too, especially for the savoury food which I intend to try soon!

When we found this place, it was after lunch so this placed wasn't full. We choose our own poke bowls, the food was great, quick service and ended with a matcha ice cream. Only good things to say. Well done.

Lovely little place. I reluctantly had to go downstairs to eat but it was delightful. Bright and airy. I managed to charge my phone there as well. I ordered a poke bowl with courgette base and sashimi. It was really fresh, light and delicious and the dressing was just right. The portion is surprisingly very small and bearing in mind that it was nearly £10, not exactly value for money. The small bowl was only half full. It was more like a side and really they should not be charging more than £6 for it, in my opinion. Alternatively, they could increase the portion size.

Took a chance on this nice cafe. Although the teriyaki donburi is very popular, I opted for the Miso aubergine and tofu don. I was not disappointed with this tasty combo with great flavour. I was suggested to try the bancha tea and was pleasantly surprised with the relaxing taste and a moist sweet Miso brownie. I will definitely revisit to try their other dishes.

Great taste for the poke. 10.7£ is affordable. They also provide the Matcha(green tea) there which is quite popular. Kitchen seems tidy and the chef wears the gloves. Good services.

A cosy restaurant just out of the heart of Soho. We went in the afternoon and it was pretty quiet, but the service was still very quick and efficient - the food good too. The best part of the menu is being able to make your own bowl of poke, as well as all the matcha flavoured foods. Loved the cheesecake!

Nice lunch place in the middle of Soho. (There is more seating downstairs.) Tried the spicy mayo prawn with courgette and rice as a base. Not the cheapest option for a quick lunch, but it tasted great. I will definitely come back to try some of the other bowls.

Best matcha soft serve ever! 😋 Even though it's pricey, but nice to treat yourself once in a while. Wouldn't recommend watermelon+matcha, drink had no flavour, like water with bitterness of tea. Latte wasn't impressive too, but looked great.

Contrary to other Japanese matcha eateries nearby, the desserts here are not that photogenic but it is the taste of very matcha that matters. I thought nothing could taste more matcha than the MATCHA GATEAU, until I took a bite out of that MATCHA TART. Intensity of sweetness is just right. Truly quality matcha patisserie at reasonable price (except for the MATCHA MONT BLANC which was not really a Mont Blanc and did not taste that good). It is crowded at weekends, so expect to go for takeaway or you would have to join the long queue otherwise. Service was average, and very very very slow.

This is the best Poke in London, I've tried a few in this city and Tombo is surely the best! Great service, friendly helpful waiters, interesting selection of Matcha tea and a good combo of Poke ingredients.

I really love this place, the food is great, but more importantly matcha latte and hojicha latte are great! I prefer sushi or poke bowls. Also I love sittings upstairs, and can spend 3 hours there. Highly recommended!
