Just been to the Wardour Street shop and the food was fantastic (roast turkey & roast beef sandwiches). Really friendly staff who made us feel really welcome. Would definitely go again.

I have tried the others, and have never had a bad bite from any of them, this will undoubtedly be the same quality and standard of service as the rest of the group. Am a bit of a sucker for the salt beef, 400 miles to get one for me!! If you are reading this, then you will not be disappointed !! Trust me, I should know :)

Tongue and Brisket on Leather Lane, A London Deli featuring Chicken Schnitzel, Roast Turkey, Salt Beef, basically ALL the good stuff!. on August 25, 2016. Posted In: London. Tongue and Brisket on Leather Lane in Smithfield near Holburn Station is a Deli serving many of the Jewish Classics. Some people describe it as a New York style Deli, but that is unfair to the history of the area. This was the sort of place that we found in London long before those guys over the pond learnt how to love a sandwich.

Small haven for meat eaters who love shopping. After a well deserved shopping recess from grabbing cheap frocks off leather lane rails, we grabbed a quick lunch. Salty beef served with assorted salads was soft and tasty. Perfect for banting!

One of the handier aspects of writing about a place with a short menu is that I don't have to feel guilty about passing judgment after only trying one or two dishes. Not that I often feel guilty about passing judgment on a place after only trying one or two dishes of course (it would be a pretty thin blog otherwise), but I just feel marginally more confident about the whole thing when those one or two dishes constitute 90% of the menu. Writing about, for example, burger bars or ramen joints is very straightforward - ramen good? Good restaurant. Ramen bad? Bad restaurant. Easy.

I’ve never really been a fan of beef. Sure, I’ll go out for a burger once in a while but I’d rather be sitting down in front of a plate of lamb, chicken or just plain ol’ rice and veg. I don’t know what it is about beef that bores the pants off of me, but it does. Maybe it’s because (ha!) I’m not a massive fan of steaks (it’s just a lump of meat!) and the meat in a Sunday roast is (for me anyway) completely overshadowed by the glorious trimmings.

Why am I waffling on about all of this? Well that’s probably got to do with the fact that, for the first time in years… I’m sitting here super fancying beef. And it’s all because of Tongue & Brisket.

Prior to visiting Tongue & Brisket, I’d only really tried salt beef at Beigel Bake and Beigel Shop (If you have no idea where either of those places are I feel sorry for you… Also, reviews coming soon!) and while I do enjoy them, I’ve never really fallen in love with either of the Beigel shops as much as everybody else. Thankfully, I can’t say the same about Tongue & Brisket.

Everything about this place is positive (well apart from the fact that it’s not across the street from my home). The guys working there are friendly, the place is clean and (most importantly) the food is top notch.

I went for the salt beef on rye bread with mustard and pickled cucumber, a latke on the side and was also offered a fish ball on the house.

I don’t really want to say too much on the fishball as, in all honesty, I can’t stand fish. I may not be a fan of beef but that’s not because I hate the taste. I just find it boring. Fish, on the other hand I can barely stomach. I only accepted the fishball to be polite and was kind of dreading the first bite. The fish taste wasn’t that overpowering at first but slowly crept in as I was chewing…. That’s all I’m writing on the fishball. It wasn’t fishy at the start but it got fishier. That’s it. I could say more but coming from someone who doesn’t like fish it’d either be me giving it a very unfair, negative review or me having to lie and say I liked it. The truth is, if you like fish I would expect you to like this. If you don’t, then you’ll probably be in the same boat as me.

The actual sandwich itself was beautiful. The meat literally crumbled as you bit into the surprisingly soft rye bread, the mustard had a hefty kick to it and the tang of the pickled cucumber complimented the other flavours perfectly. Tongue & Brisket’s salt beef sandwich screams quality and with every delicious bite you can tell that these guys not only know what they’re doing, but they care about what they’re doing.

Now on to my unexpected, personal highlight… the latke. I’ve had latkes from numerous places over the years and they’ve always been nice but nothing to shout about. The latke I got at Tongue & Brisket though was downright beautiful and, at the same size as your average chicken fillet, generous. It managed to not only have a beautifully crispy coating but the inside was substantial and fluffy at the same time. Try and wrap your heads around that, ‘cos I ate the damn thing and still can’t. For it to steal the limelight from what was a very tasty salt beef sandwich shows you just how delicious this thing was.

I’m extremely happy that Tongue & Brisket offer a good selection of sandwiches too, as now I can go back and say “It’s for the site!” instead of the real reason which is “I’m a fat b****rd that wants another latke!”

Do you like your sandwiches packed with enough meat to sate a viking? Has your heart been broken, and/or your arteries clogged, one time too many by the promise of a delicious, authentic Salt Beef sammich that was more salt (and mustard) than beef? Do you believe its unjust to charge Londoners more than 5 GBP for a sandwich they practically invented?

If so, the tongue and brisket deserves to be your next meal. Headed by John Georgiou, a workingman’s William Rose, the Tongue and Brisket takes salt beef to the next level by turning its deliciousness to a science.

The Salt beef brisket is what you’ll want to set your teeth into. The tender beef is guaranteed to melt in your mouth before you can say “brisk me” and you’ll be happy to know that the flavours swirling inside are mostly good ol fashioned English free range beef. In other words, care is taken not to overrun the meat with any seasoning or salt, which is a massive win in my book. Did I mention that all Brisketts are brined, cured and rotated in and out of a hot bath on site, from scratch? Well they are, and furthermore, all briskets are hand carved to specification. Like your beef more crispy than tender? Done. A little extra meat? Deal. Fancy a bit more fat? How very risqué..and no problem. Is salt beef not your first choice? Not to worry.

If you’re like me then even a delicious lunch of salt-cured rare beef packed between flimsy pieces of bread can be a bit overwhelming to the senses. If so, chef Georgiou has other delicacies on tap, including  roast beef, turkey, ox tongue, chicken schnitzel and chopped liver; all of which promise to set you back no more than 4.90, except the liver which is 3.90. You can enjoy any of the above with either Rye, wholewheat, baguette bread or in a sesame bagel. Toppings include pickles, horseradish and sauerkraut. All fresh, all delicious.

Grab a sandwich and a drink then grab a chair on the large open table inside or out, and dig in. Bring plenty of napkins.

The brisket baguette I had for my lunch when in London (Farringdon) from Tongue & Brisket was superb. Staff were very friendly too. Take out or a small dine in area available... I will be returning soon. Awesome.

Meltingly magnificent salt beef sandwiches. Also the Reuben salt beef sandwich is substantial and full of flavour combining the satisfying textures of sauerkraut and cheese. Don't forget to ask for the sliced pickle to go in the sandwiches! Haven't yet tried the other tempting items like turkey. Very helpful staff.

Fantastic salt beef sandwich and Reuben. Pretty good latke. Not many indoor tables but most people are doing takeaway. Will be back!

Had a salt beef sandwich as a filling breakfast, along with a latka. Service was quick and very friendly and the sandwich was absolutely packed with meat. The mustard and pickle add flavour and we are definitely coming back to try a Reuben. Warning that the potato latka is incredibly filling-seriously makes a McDonald's hash brown look tiny in comparison.

There are not many places in London where you can get a proper salt beef sandwich, on rye, with mustard and pickles plus a latke. And even fewer at a sensible price from a nice team. Just be ready to queue for your sandwich

Family business. 50-year meat salt recipe: 2 weeks in fridge and 21 days in a pickle juice. Roast Beef 🥩 sandwich with baguette is delicious! Salt Beef sandwich with toasted bagel 🥯 with chicken soup 🍜 is a nice lunch combo! Place has hand sanitizer zone and tap 🚰 to wash hands. Great food and staff!

Pure heaven! Ordered classic salted beef with chips and drink and the sandwich was just amazing! The only thing I'd change would be adding English mustard. Highly recommend this place

It is a bit too packed and inconvenient time to collect, but clearly, the best brunch/lunch Halal brisket as well. Kosher foods are 10/10. I don't live around there. However, I do must say it is exquisitely right to the tongue. I'm not sure how I can articulate this further. Best get yourself one.
