Great sushi and bento boxes, great service and relatively reasonably priced. A little hard to get a table straight away at any time in the evening but that's probably a testament to its popularity.
One of my favourites.
We have been coming to this restaurant for nearly ten years now, and even once booked the whole place out late one weekday for my 27th birthday! ET does superb sushi for excellent prices. If you don't like sushi, maybe try their age dashi tofu, or pumpkin koroke. They also do delicious teriyaki dishes and their house salad dressing is The Best.
I would bring my sister here a lot during her chemo as it was one place where she reliably managed to eat. The food is always well presented although the restaurant itself is not especially swish and the toilets are very cramped. Despite these shortfalls expect queues going out of the restaurant even on weeknights.
I have been anticipating to try Eay Tokyo for a long long time and I've finally visited this branch in Golders Green! There is a huge variety of choices on the menu, from soup noodles to bento. I ordered this bento with generous amount of sashimi and selection of tempura. The portion size is large and I nearly couldn't finish it. The quality of the sashimi is high and they are very fresh. I was sitting on the bar side and I could see all the fresh fish and sushi being prepared by the chefs. The environment of the restaurant is nice, even though it is a bit packed during lunch time. The tempura is delicious and the miso soup is just a perfect match for bento. The price isn't cheap but reasonable for the quality of the food. Also, each item on the menu is shown in clear photo so it's easier for anyone who's new to Japanese food to understand what they're ordering! I will definitely visit again to try their range of authentic Japanese food!🎌
One of my flavourite! They do very good katsu pork curry! And good value bento!
I've been reliably told that there's a large Japanese community in Cricklewood, not far from 'Eat Tokyo' in Golder's Green. As I stepped into this unassuming looking restaurant, I noticed the Japanese invasion instantly - Cricklewood must have been a lonely place tonight.
Is there a better recommendation than this I thought? Surely not. My mind was racing ahead already. May I also say it was around seven o'clock and the joint was rammed. Even more reason to feel on a culinary high.
Another plus in my book. A sushi bar. Always a damned good sign.
To the menu then. Each range of dishes was accompanied by a photo so it was a thick book of offerings. I headed straight to the sashimi page and chose the seven times three pieces of raw fish to share with my good pal and fellow writer for the MBW blog, Michael.
One of his favourite dishes is eel - he chose the unagi, the picture of which was just stunning. Both of us also love gyoza, so we opted for a portion of vegetable dumplings.
I'm not a lover of Sake - I've given it a damned good go but it has sadly defeated me. I am, however, very fond of Japanese lager so we ordered a couple of Asahi beers.
The visually stunning sashimi arrived on a semi circular lacquered plate - you could tell it was first class - it was a dish of exquisite beauty and the reassuring silence that ensued was testament to a mighty fine plate of fish. Rather strangely we had to ask for the ginger but this was distinctly superior to the commercial and fake pink slithers you often get in inferior places. It simply sang with zing. Oh joy, oh joy.
The eel and the gyoza arrived whilst we were eating the sashimi - that is my only gripe. You feel as though you are being rushed which I resent in no small way.
However, when Michael's face gave me the look that 'The Galloping Gourmet' used to make on the telly a bazillion years ago, I just had to smile. Big time. I love seeing people enjoy their food. I have to confess that I was an eel virgin, so was eager to see what the fuss was about. I had no idea how soft and delicate it was. It had a layer of very strong, sweet, terriyaki like sauce glazed on top and I found this just a little too sweet for my liking, but the actual fish was extraordinarily good.
As for the gyoza, the best skins I have ever eaten encased a delicate vegetable medley which were happily dunked into a gorgeous dipping sauce. I especially liked the way they were fried on one side and left steamed on the other. Lush.
As for the service, like all places that are constantly full, the staff feel the pressure. It was a bit slow, (apart from when we the food came at the same time!) but this was hardly a heinous crime when you're having such a good time of it.
Someone had told me that Eat Tokyo was cheap. I beg to differ. Three dishes and a couple of beers came to just over £55. My response? I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Can't say fairer than that.
Fantastic value for money! ! Very good selection and quality of sashimi. Service may not be the best but overall is well worth it. One of the best places in London for Japanese cousin. Highly recommend.
If you are a sushi lover, this is the place for you. However, getting a table at the Golders Green branch is not an easy task; due to very limited space and the high quality of the food. Despite high demand, they still charge very reasonable prices to keep their customers coming back.
There are very small tables and quite a lively atmosphere, so if you are looking for a calm dinner, it is probably not the right place for you. The bathroom is in close proximity to some tables, which isn't very pleasant. The restaurant could really use a larger area, but they offer eating at the bar to accommodate those who mind the long waiting time.
The food, however, makes up for the lack of space and busy ambiance. I recommend the Toyko Roll, but there are many other dishes that make Eat Tokyo one of the best representations of Japanese cuisine in London.
The initial long wait of 2 hours to be seated that I had to endure was definitely worth it. However it would be wise to make a reservation at least 24 hours before hand; but even then, you could still find yourself waiting 20 mins or more outside the restaurant. All in all, good food but a less than ideal setting.
Ambiance: The place is very small and simple, feels as though they did not put much thought into their setting. Though I think this is mainly because they know their food is good, and that makes up for it all.
Service: This place gets VERY busy, I had made a reservation for 8:00pm, got there at 8:05pm, and they still made us wait another 10-15 minutes to be seated. It seemed very hectic and messy, so not a great start to the meal. Throughout the meal however the service improved a bit, though they still weren't too personal about your service, and almost felt like that want to get you in and our, and don't really care much about the in between.
Food: The food however is great, really fresh ingredients and prepared to perfection. The prawn tempura roll was my favourite, though I was left desperately wishing I had tried the asparagus tempura roll because they looked fantastic. Now I did try their award winning hyper roll, and honestly didn't really enjoy it, I think it's something about the taste of the eel and some of the other fishes blended together that did not taste right in my opinion. But obviously I stand out on this one, because it is after all "award winning". But don't let this discourage you, it is good Japanese food.
Value: I cannot rave about the value enough, we ordered so many rolls and different dishes, which in any other restaurant would've cost us at least £100, though we only paid £50. And with those £50 the two of us left incredibly stuffed. So really great value, especially if you're going to split the bill.
Would I go back?: Definitely want to go back to this place, I'm a huge lover of Japanese, and this place manages to get the food right, and at decent prices. Win win for me!
Eat Tokyo is an intimate place. Their food is pretty decent and I would go back time and time again. The price is reasonable and their bento box variety is great. A great place for family and friends. Other Eat Tokyo locations are more presentable and fancy.
Best budget Japanese food in the UK! Considering the high price points for food in London this place breaks all the normalities, a huge plate of katsu curry for 9.90 is amazing compared to other places up north for worse quality and definitely smaller quantity. The sushi was of good quality and drinks were very unique with a nice touch of Japan
The staff is very friendly and the food is fresh and tasty.
We tried the salmon bento box, chicken katsu bento box and the chicken katsu curry. We loved it! It was freshly made and the portion size was perfect. Will definitely be back.
Great selection (endless menu) with affordable prices. The atmosphere isn't that great but you get to have decent Japanese food. The bento box was massive even though it looked a bit empty. The restaurant itself is tiny and the queue was quite long so make sure you book a table in advance. I was surprised that you pay around £50 for two and they still charge you around £0.80 for take away boxes which is a bit odd. The overall experience was satisfactory. Worth a visit.
If you want honest, humble Japanese cuisine then this is the place to go.
Firstly the variety of hot dishes and sushi they offer is immense, with a menu that resembles a catalogue.
Their sushi is original and doesn't try to be experimental so you know you're getting a genuine experience.
Good Japanese food.
Quick service and clean toilets.
Staff is warm and friendly with comfortable environment.
No need to reserve but wait is aprox 15 mins each time I went.
One of my favourite Japanese places in London. Authentic food, lots of choices, and definitely one of the cheaper places for Japanese food. Have been to a few branches in London and all of them are good quality although the service can be slow when they are busy. They do decent sashimi boots, and lots of different sushi. Loads of hot choices aswell that you don’t find elsewhere. My favourite is their deep fried octopus tentacles!
Food: 9/10
Value: 8/10
Instagramable: 6/10
Every time we come back to this place with pleasure.
The food is amazing, and the service is impeccable.
I can say 5*Plus.
Thank you very much.
Today 5 May we got an amazing day.
We celebrate my daughter birthday and it was explosive day of savoy.
Excellent.
Thank you very much for the incredible experience
Ate here today and it was a wonderful experience. The service was excellent! Rhw waitress was so kind to me. The food was great! The portions are generous too, compared to the price you pay. Its much cheaper than other Japanese places with the same great quality.
I would 100% recommend and I hope to be back soon.
Handy location. The one opposite Golders Green Station, don't think it's suitable for wheelchairs users, too tight and narrow. Waited 20 mins on a weekend, isn't bad for Eat Tokyo really. Took a friend, his first visit.
Ordered a mixtute of starters, prawn temperature, chicken yakitori, chicken karaage which we enjoyed, all cooked nice and fresh. Mains were tad disappointing, the beef donburi came at the very end of the meal (we had almost finished the food, thought it wasn't coming), this looked decent, tasted not up to scratch, whole bowl was oily and beef was the shabu shabu thin slices, bits were hard and boney, poor quality. Wonder if they ran out of their usual beef? I should have told them, they never ask if the food was ok though, always so busy too! Steamed egg was tasty and pork katsu curry was ok, large portion but pork was dry.
Came to £48 with service charge.
Hopefully will have a better food experience next time, customer service was good.
Eat Tokyo, is one of the best chain of Japanese restaurant in London. Their menu is huge and price are reasonable. We recommend their sake mussels, mackerel and salmon bento boxes. Their white peach wine is excellent as well as their Matcha beers. Restaurant is busy but booking are available from one day before.
One of the best Eat Tokyo we always love to visit. Busy restaurants but with very nice staff. We understand the restaurant is normally busy but they do not let us feel left out. Thanks Paulyn and team. 👍
Food is always good and standard is always there. Love their Lobster Sashimi a lot.
Taste really good, value for money is very good also. The only reason why its not 5 star is that it always crowded with queue. Other wise, if you want to eat Japanese cuisine, this is the place you should definitely visit
Absolutely love Eat Tokyo! A go to place for my family when we want some delicious and decently priced Japanese food.
Would highly recommend the bentos (lunch boxes) and wide range of sushi!
Staff are also friendly and attentive.
10/10 my favourite place to eat when I'm home.
Amazing food & excellent produce! Super tasty sushi and sashimi, high quality fish and nice service. The menu is huge, but I often go for sushi & sashimi sets. A lot of choice.
I am so glad Eat Tokyo has added a bunch of vegan options!!! My friend has always told me about this place but before there were less options and now I can finally have a good time here eating vegan.
I had the miso vegan ramen and it's delicious and massive portion! My personal favourites of small dishes are the wakame salad and the gourd sushi rolls - so yummy. Reasonably priced for authentic Japanese food and generous portion. Will definitely come back and recommend it to my vegan friends who like eating Japanese.
