Reviews Roxy Bar & Screen

After reading the other reviews I came here with low expectations but I was pleasantly surprised. I'll start with the negatives - the place was a bit grotty and it was definitely under staffed which made the staff a bit stressed and slow. But overall the shabby-chic atmosphere was quite cool and matched the film we were watching (Lala land) quite well, the food was standard pub food and tasted pretty good. Despite what other people were saying for London the drinks were reasonably priced and the wine £16 for a bottle of sauvingon blanc was pretty cheap! Overall I had a good time and would go again.

Good points: decent enough pub food, nice candlelit atmosphere, very hardworking and approachable staff, film and sound quality tolerable, and using a voucher (£12 per person) amazingly good value for a film and a three course meal. Bad points: as mentioned by others, stale food smell on entering, tatty furniture (I sunk into a very uncomfortable hole in our sofa), and quite high drinks prices. Overall, for me the good outweighs the bad, and with a little improvement - mend the furniture, employ some more staff, only include things on menu that really exist, could be a great venue. Unlike most cinemas it was full, and I didn't spot any furry creatures scurrying about.

I went here in the summer to watch one of England's Euro 2012 games with a few friends. We got there early so we had pretty good seats in front of the massive screen. The atmosphere was great for the whole game. The drinks were quite easy to get, even though the place was packed. The food was pretty good too, although to be honest most people were probably drinking too much to notice. The entry fee was only £2, and I think that was actually a help. If there hadn't been a fee I think the crowd would have been very different, and the atmosphere wouldn't have been as good.

Came here for a screening of an indie movie... got great seats in terms of being able to see the screen but chose wooden dining chairs instead of the couch - ouch. Will know better next time. Other than that, great cocktails, great chips and a good atmosphere.

Personally loved the concept to put on a movie whilst guests lounge on sofas and tuck into a proper 3-course meal simultaneously! Food can be a bit messy to eat when you can't really see it, but that was really half the fun for me! Staff were attentive but not intrusive as they swiped away dirty plates and replaced it with fresh courses, and the curtain divide made it easy for people to duck in and out for toilet breaks.

Lovely food (steak cooked to perfection with a sweet drizzle to dip the awesome twice fried chips in), great venue (classy vibe), fab movie (they only choose the best). Love the loos! - the Morganico murals (especially the Sky-surfer), classic movie posters and a wierd optical illusion where the girls have your face on their bodies! Check it out! Well worth the £12. The service was especially attentive too ;¬)

The Roxy has a slightly odd layout, but it's so cheap to drink and watch a film that it's always worth a trip. Their schedule includes indie films and big football matches, so they certainly attract a diverse crowd - check online first as I've got my dates wrong before and had a narrow escape from a room full of footie fans!

Fantastic cult cinema (and occasional sports) venue, offering either sofas, wine table or booths, depending how early you turn up. Since a velvet curtain cannot be soundproofed, an occasional drunken reveller at the bar can be an annoyance. Nevertheless, alongside the BFI and the Prince Charles cinema, this is one of London's essential sources of cult cinema.
