For authentic, homestyle Japanese food, this is THE restaurant to dine at in London. The sushi is the best you can get this side of Toronto. I have never had a meal here that I wasn't impressed by. The staff are excellent -- attentive, knowledgeable and courteous. ごちそうさま!

Very pleased with my first visit! The waitress was very personable and friendly! Even tried Unagi for the first time and I was surprised at how good it was. All the food was very authentic and delicious, I recommend visiting for yourself! I'll definitely return. Once I learn some casual conversational Japanese :) It's not essential but will likely enrich my next visit.

Hands down this is the best and most authentic Japanese food in the city. Family owned and operated it is the real deal. In business for years and there is a reason. Outstanding food! Is it a little run down, yes but it is what it is. Eat here !!!

I'm not going to talk about "authentic" because I'm not from Japan. I know that the food here is consistently good over three years of stopping in there on dates or solo.

Checked out reviewsfirst. I have driven past this restaurant for years. It is well signed, but tucked away in a small plaza. I was promptly greeted and seated by friendly staff. The seating area is divided into 2 sections each seating 25-30. Decor was a little tired, but clean and pleasant. Service was prompt and timely, without being rushed or intrusive. I ordered the Tokyo Platter which consisted of sushi, sashimi and a couple pieces of cucumber roll. Choice of soup or salad to start, I got Miso soup which was as good as at most other Sushi places. The platter came promptly and was nicely presented. The Sushi was fresh and tasty and turned out to be just the right amount for one.

Shiki, hands down, is the best Japanese restaurant in London, perhaps in Ontario in a way. Its Saikyo Yaki is super good and perhaps the best Japanese food I ever tasted. So glad we have such a brilliant secret place at London.

If you've heard this before, you can skip to the bottom of this review. Otherwise, read on.

You know, the spacing of railroad tracks here in North America is some odd number. It's not a simple number like 5 feet or 1500 mm. It's a number plus a fraction regardless the unit you use. You would think that a sane person, upon inventing railroad train, would choose a simple number for the width of the axles, right? But not the train! Why is that?

Apparently, in the beginning, in England, the people who started building railroad cars were the same people who built horse drawn coaches. Naturally, the railroad cars were built to have the same axle width as horse drawn coaches because the builders had all the jigs and fixtures. Hence, the spacing of the railroad tracks.

So how did they determine the axle width of the horse drawn carriages? Well, back when the Romans occupied England, they built inter-city highways so that they could move troops easily. On those highways, they ran their chariots all over to the point that ruts developed. The width of their chariots was dictated by the width of two horses lined up side by side. So that's how they spaced their chariot wheels and that's how ruts were formed. The spacing of these ruts dictated the wheel spacing of all coaches built since then. That's because when coaches with wheel spacings different from the ruts tried to use the rutted highways, their wheels would be torn off the wagon due to excessive side load.

So, essentially, the spacing of today's railroad train tracks is dictated by the width of two horse's a%%es.

But it get worse:

You know the two rocket boosters on the space shuttle? The engineers could have designed them in any shapes and sizes but they couldn't. Why? Because those boosters had to be transported from factory to NASA's launch facility via trains through tunnels. The boosters had to be designed to fit through those tunnels. So, the size of the space shuttle rocket boosters was dictated by the width of two ancient horse's a%%es. How do you like them apples!

Have you noticed wherever you go, sushi pieces never exceed certain sizes? All are bite sizes? You would think a sushi chef can easily give you a nice slab of tuna like a piece of steak with a side of rice and make life much easier for them and allow you to use your fork and knife to custom size your bite sizes, right? Well, unfortunately back when Japanese started making sushi, all they had were chopsticks. By the time forks and knifes were introduced, tradition has already set in.

Oh yeah, Shiki! My favourite! The best! Give them a try!

Very authentic. We've been to a lot of Japanese restaurants in london and find this to be our favorite. I think it's a Japanese couple who own this place, it says on their website they've been there since 1987 and it shows their experience by delivering consistent quality. I have a feeling most Japanese/sushi places in london are run by Chinese or other asian nationals, and they never seem to make the food taste very authentic, this place you can pick out subtle flavours you won't find in a a lot of ayce places. The service is pretty good, thou we've had a waiter/waitress who doesn't check up on you so your sitting there with a dry mouth because you can't get a refill on your drink and they didn't even look too busy. But there are also servers who are very good at their job. If you like japanese food but not ayce, this might be the place for you because of their menus diverse selections. To me the best value is the shiki lunch special bento. It's half the price of the similar diner one and has a lot of variety and every thing is great in it.

Hands down the BEST in London. Seriously the best in London. My favourite place to eat. Tuna tataki, unagi (bbq eel) nigiri, and the house salad are all to die for. I can't leave without ordering the dressing to take home.

I can admit the place isn't the prettiest, but the food makes up for it by a landslide.

Best Japanese food in London, hands down. This place has the best Japanese food in London, unparalleled.
I particularly like their chirashi salad, as well as their spicy salmon rolls. Their spicy salmon does not have panko, and the salmon comes in more finely chopped pieces than the convention ones found in other restaurants. It is my favourite place to go for spicy salmon rolls! The restaurant is very well decorated, and the servers are very professional and courteous. I have never had a bad meal there!
The pricing is a little bit more expensive than others. However, for the quality of the food, it is totally worth it!

A long term favorite. I've been coming here for years with my family on my birthday and occasional date. I've always loved the service there. The old lady remembers my name even after a year between visits! I also get the party plate of sushi and it's always been fresh and authentic. I will be coming here again.

Family Favourite. My favourite Japanese restaurant in the city for years, I've introduced my family (including my mom) to it and we've all enjoyed their various dishes. This is one place you can take people who love sushi (traditional and contemporary) as well as people who don't like sushi. Many people seem to think that Japanese food = sushi, which is not true. There are several items on the menu that are not 'raw fish' or fish at all! And so far, all of them have been tasty.
We brought extended family through, a party of 8, and ordered a tasting style menu and loved all of it. We appreciated the quick service and variety, given the large group and wide range of tastes.
Menu items are primarily 'old-fashioned' Japanese style, not fusion as many restos are now. I've found that one of my criteria for enjoying a Japanese resto tends to start with the tea, since most meals start with a pot of tea. The tea here is so tasty that I buy loose leaf from them to take home!

Raving, sparkling, shining review of Shiki of Japan on the way!
Even if the sushi had been terrible (which it wasn't!!!), I would return for the service alone! Our server was so sweet and pleasant! I would wrap her up and take her home! Adorable!
We ordered gyoza, a Japanese mashed potato dumpling, several sushi rolls (including California and vegetarian dragon roll), salmon and tuna belly nigiri pieces, and ginger ice cream! All top notch quality, beautifully presented, and tasty! Spicy mayo was great! Couldn't have been a better experience! Couldn't have asked for better quality sushi or service!

Amazing!!! All I can say is "just like in japan". It's been a long time since I visited Shiki & I forgot how good & how authentic their dishes are. To top it off, we ordered goma icecream at the end of our date, it totally brought us back to Kyoto the last time we had goma icecream. Yes, the place is outdated & need some freshenup, but it's all worth it.

The only authentic Japanese Restaurant in London since the 1980s. The menu has such a variety from appetizers, hot food, dinners, to a la carte, sushi and combo. Quality is amazing, and hands down they have the best Japanese food in town. Must try Sukiyaki.

This little restaurant has been serving London for years. The atmosphere is beyond its ‘best before’ date, but I’ve never had a bad meal or service. On this visit, our waitress was delightful. The miso soup really stated the meal off well and the sorbet topped off the excellent meal nicely.

Great food, different style, fish tasted like it was fresh caught. Very traditional style of food, especially the appetizers. The service was just as good as the food. The server was informative and attentive in just the right way. She truly heightened the dining experience. The clear Osumashi/Dashi broth is a must try. It's nothing epic, but it's a must try because it's so different

Wonderful and authentic Japanese food hidden away in a strip mall. My daughter suggested sushi and I looked for the closest and found Shiki. Glad we did. A smallish place that opens at 4:30 with all be it dated decor, but lovely staff who greeted with a smile. Get reservations! People were turned away at the door. Ordered our favorite's, spider roll, kamikaze salmon roll, green dragon, and California roll. Edamame, teriyaki beef, and tempura mix with beauty fresh shrimp, zucchini, beans, and sweet potato. Finished with a souffle and Moochie dessert. We were all very impressed with the freshness and quality of the food. We will be back because they have an extensive menu that includes a lot of items we don't normally see and are excited to try.

Bit of a strange experience. Service left a little to be desired, I'm assuming it was maybe a new/inexperienced employee but the food -was- tasty and quick to come from the kitchen. I've tried several dishes takeout and it's always been high quality, fresh & beautiful food, just not a great first time dining in. We went for sushi but weren't provided the full menu w/ sushi on, then watched it being handed out to other tables by our same server so perhaps a mistake but we needed to be quick and didn't want to hassle anyone. Will be back & perhaps ask a little bit more confidently for the full menu next time. Hot pot looked really fun & tasty.

I highly recommend this restaurant. My friend and I tried several dishes, and all of them were super delicious. Sukiyaki soup was seasoned perfectly, and the regular beef included was impressed enough, making me wondering how good their upgraded one is. The egg used for sauce was creamy, very fresh, and was not smelly at all. Another dish I extremely liked was the Aburi set. This set had 4 sushi, and each one showed total different tastes. This set truly matched their restaurant name: Shiki (meaning 4 seasons). When chewing the salmon one with fired stuffs, it sounded like walking in the snow. We also tried Gyu-kushi, each piece was completely immersed in perfectly seasoned sauce, and the chicken meat itself was chewy. Also, the sea food for sashimi or sushi was so fresh and good that my friend and I later decided to try every sashimi in the manual. We personally recommend Hokki-gai sashimi (we had 9 or 10 pieces in total). The raw shrimp and squid sashimi were very rich (if you are not a fan of this taste, these two might be too much for you.) Btw, it took some time to serve the dishes, but definitely worthy for waiting. 最高! 冲!真的很好吃!寿喜锅有两款,基础的就很棒了,有钱可以试一试和牛的。也有单独的和牛料理。他们家刺身真的超新鲜,一点异味都没有。非常推荐北极贝。上菜很慢。

High quality sashimi and sushi and worth the price for a la carte. Deco is a bit out of place for a sushi restaurant but still pleasant. Only issue we had is that we were told that the sashimi platter would come with more rice than was provided.

I had a delicious meal and an excellent time at Shiki in early August this year. Every time I go it feels like being at home. Our meal started with miso soup and a complementary appetizer consisting of a small korokke ball (breaded mashed potato), tempura lotus root and a couple of edamame beans drizzled with tonkatsu sauce. After that we had sizzling Hibachi Shrimp served over a small burner, nicely-salted Edamame and perfectly cooked Saikyo Yaki (miso-marinated black cod). The fish was tender and juicy, and flaked just the right amount. After this we opted for some sushi: a Spicy Salmon Roll, Kamikaze Salmon Roll (spicy salmon with avocado and tempura flakes) and a California Combo which consisted of three pieces of nigiri sushi (tuna, salmon and shrimp) and half a Cali roll. Finally for dessert we had Zenzai, which is a lightly sweet red bean soup with mochi in it, as well as a home-made Japanese cheesecake which is gluten free! It was an excellent meal and my only regret was that I wasn't able to eat more. Our server, Lulu, is always fun and personable. Can't wait to go back!

Ordered the Chicken Curry with Edamame and Karaage to start. Appetizers came quickly and were very tasty. The karaage was particularly well done and not excessively oily. The portions are generous for what you pay. I believe chicken breast is used for the chicken curry, which was juicy and flavourful -not dry. The curry sauce was delicious with a slight hint of heat. I was told this place had authentic Japanese food and was definitely not disappointed. I would eat here more frequently if I lived in town but I am motivated to make the drive to return.
