Small and clean place. Authentic Kerala food. The waiter suggested us Deviled Chicken for starter, which was huge in quantity since we were 3 of us, bit sweetish but was good. I would totally recommend Appam and Chicken Korma. Biryani was just ok..

I have been to ananthapuri multiple times.
Whatever i tried here have been excellent.
This place provides authentic kerala cuisine at reasonable price.some of the must have items are fish curry meals, kerala porotta, biriyani.
Their sea food items are also good. For ppl who fear spicy food, tell them in advance

The food here took me back to my childhood in one mouthful. The beef fry was succulent and spicy and I enjoyed it with the flaky parathas, the mutton biryani was fragrant and subtle, my husband enjoyed the mutton thali and the crab curry with appams was an absolute treat! The service was courteous and the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because there was a 45 minute wait for the food to arrive. Having said that, it was worth every mouthful so I will definitely be returning there again.

So I went to this restaurant yesterday to celebrate Onam. The usual menu wasn't in place and instead the Onam Sadhya buffet style was on.

The place is humble and felt like I was back in India for a bit as I saw buckets of food coming and being served on my banana leaf (read plate) . The experience was great and although the sadhya had vegetarian delicacies that are cooked for the festival specifically, and I am a meat lover - I wasn't disappointed.

I plan to visit this place again and try the parotta with the malabar fish curry and I think it will be great! So I do recommend this place and I think it will surprise you. Next review when I am done hogging on the kerala parantha's :)

I go to this restaurant frequently ... obviously it must be worthy of it . I must say that the food here is authentic south indian keralaite . this is coming from a malayalee who is very choosy about the indian food that I eat .the pomfret fry is the best . and the spicy chicken curry is mouth watering too . There is authentic puttu and appam .. must say that it comes at par with the best I have had in Kerala. the only downside is that the vegans have limited options . for non vegeterians this place will be heaven . and the icing on the cake is that it is cheap . so totally worth it !!!!

Another gem in this not so gem of a locality in East London. Some people call this location as Little India, I would agree this place does remind me of Chennai :P

But I have become a fan of Malyali cuisine since going to this place. Enjoy God's own country right in London. Chicken is excellent, but lamb curry is fabulous!!

One last tip, do not go here if you are a vegetarian. You got lot of better options in the neighborhood for that

What a find this place has been - a real gem! I Very close to the East ham Tube station, this looks like just another ordinary restaurant on the high street. But it is the fantastic Chicken Curry that really defines this place for me - extremely spicy and best enjoyed with a coke. No restaurant in London beats it .. The biryanis are also authentic and delicious. Disclaimer - this is no high end restaurant - ambiance is totally ordinary and service is slow - but the food makes up for all of it. Must go ...

One of my favorite restaurants in East ham, serving the best Non Vegetarian south Indian Cuisine.

Simply love the appam and chicken curry. Biryani is worth a try too.

It's a very reasonable place go there just for the food. The service is average and so is the presentation of the food but the taste is EXCELLENT.

Strongly recommended place!!!

East Ham is a mini south India in London and though it may not be a joy to the eyes, it certainly has some real cheap eats on offer. There is this thing about Indians and Indian restaurants (outside of India), we generally do not like to splash the cash on a good Indian meal at a good restaurant. The trend surprises me actually. But why you ask? The answer given by many is that most of these dishes can be made at home, and quite frankly, home-made just taste better.

But if you do want a cheap quick Indian fix and happen to to be around East Ham (fat chance, yes I know), Ananthapuri doesn't disappoint. It also gives you a chance to learn what/how the good working class population of the state of Kerala in India eats. Here, I describe it as generally unhealthy, fried and filling food. Pick out a 'porotta' ( a layered flat bread made out of refined flour) and a chicken 65 or a malabar mutton curry or any of the fried sea food and tuck in while listening to the babble of Malayalam being spoken by the people in the restaurant and you may even be lucky enough to have the cable tuned into a local Malayalam t.v. show or movie so you don't get bored while you wait.

The restaurant is small and the service is friendly but food takes a little bit more time to materialize. Go in for cheap but good food and you'll end up with a big, happy tummy.

P.S: Few hints to serve you well.
They serve up pretty large portions.
They don't serve beef.
If you are going in for vegetarian fare, avoid it. Kerala loves meat more. Not for any other reason.

It's only fair that my first review should be for a place that I frequent the most!

Tucked away in East London this small restaurant is easy to miss. Though let me assure you there is nothing amiss about its food. Simply put the Mutton curry at this place is to die for....equally delectable is the Avoli/Pomfret fry, and the Kerala Chicken Fry. The Appams are good too but more often than not they don't arrive piping hot at your table. May be its done on purpose to compensate for the fiery mutton curry ;) . The biryanis (chicken, fish, seafood) are worth trying too.
Needless to say that the place has a loyal clientèle, some of whom frequent the place once a week (yours truly being one of them).
The best this is that you can eat to your heart's content without spending more than 15 pounds pp - how about that !!
A word of caution for vegetarians though - stay away from this place...

I don't understand the negative reviews. Ate here for the first time today, fantastic food on par with the best I've experienced in London (e.g. Tooting). The devilled paneer was extremely tasty with just the right amount of chilli. The puri and chapati were awesome and very fresh compared to most others I've tried. The portions were also very generous (which rarely goes hand in hand with quality). Highly recommended.

Brilliant keralan food, cheap, tasty, spicy and good portion sizes. Go for biryani, devilled chicken, vada, egg curry and poronta. The location is the sectioned off back of a pub so it's pretty basic but the food is delicious. They also cater for large groups very well, we order portions for 60 to feed 80 people. You just have to collect the pots full of food and then return them empty of food a day or two later.

Nice restaurant located a few feet away from East Ham tube station. Good choice of Kerala food items and you can also watch malayalam tv channels (Asianet mainly). Can get quite busy. Reasonable rates.

So tasty! If you have an itch for South Indian food, come to East Ham for Ananthapuri. Little paradise for kerala food just a minute or two from the tube station. We usually get the whole fish cooked in spices and tomato and wrapped in banana leaf, butter chicken, pilau rice, and a trio of parathas. More than enough food for three people, and for two people, you have enough for lunch the next day. And this comes out to £29 total for two people, even with a mango lassi. Food does take a little while, but great place to sit and chat since it never gets super crowded. Pick up some desserts from one of the joints down the street!

best Kerala restaurant in Eastham. but avoid going there on weekends if you are on a rush. ETA to get your food once ordered is about 45 mns.
