I have been addicted to their roast duck soup for decades. Now a compulsory stop over on the way to NHM and Science Museum with the kids.
IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE POSH, THAT'S THE POINT...I don't really get the people who have complained about the decor and the food in the Oriental Canteen. You can see just by looking at it that it's not haute cuisine and that it's a simple street cafe with no pretensions. If that's not what you're after then just don't go in and head on to any of the other fancier chinese restaurants in the area.
I work a lot in Kensington and for me the Stick & Bowl in Kensington High Street is my go to place for good chinese food at a low price. Again the interior is very simple and functional but the food is delicious.
The Oriental Canteen is South Kensington's answer to the Stick & Bowl. It's been here for years and the clue to how good the food is is seeing how many orientals eat in here. it's the same with the Stick & Bowl. It's reliable, affordable and quick. I hope it never changes.
Definitely a place to go if you live or work in South Ken, want Chinese food and are on month end. £5.20 for this double roast meat with rice and £4.80 if you only want single roast meat Quality is reflected in the price so this isn't a place that I will go all the way to South Ken but portion is good enough for most people unless you have big stomachs like me and price is competitive in London zone 1
Cheap and unpretentious. With hardly an abundance of cheap eats in South Kensington, Oriental Canteen stands out amongst the crowd. While not the most enticing of places from the outside and with spartan decoration within - it isn't the place to bring a date or have a languid meal. However if looking for a quick, cheap feed for around £5 the food and portion sizes are decent. I had the chicken chow mein which was topped with a surprisingly generous amount of meat for the price. Make sure to have some cash on you as they don't accept card payments.
It is named canteen so didn't go with any pretensions..simple place and was clean... The food have to say was tasty and a fairly good quality for a good price especially considering the area... Was very happy with the service who went out of their way to be helpful and accommodating ... So for a quick bite...very recommended
Really nice place to eat good chinese food and one of the cheapest places to go in South Kensington. The employees barely speek english but that is part of the experience. The service is utterly fast.
I ordered the pork belly with jasmin rice and it was completely delicious. For 2 dishes, two cokes and one jasmin tea i paid 10£, i would never eat this cheap during my stay in London.
I went to this tiny cafe for a quick lunch. The servers were very helpful and friendly. The soup noodle was delish. I will definitely go back again.Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Friendly Service and delicious food. This place is unpretentious and serves solid food. Chef is Malaysian. We ordered the Fried Kway Teow and Shanghai double cooked pork. Yummy!
Oriental Canteen is a small, casual Chinese restaurant in South Kensington. The restaurant has a few tables inside, as well as a few tables outside on the patio. The menu features a variety of Chinese dishes, including noodles, rice dishes, and stir-fries.
I visited Oriental Canteen whilst visiting the local museums on a weekend. The restaurant was busy, but I was able to get a table without too much of a wait. The service was friendly and efficient.
I ordered the crispy pork and rice dish which was nice for the price. Overall it's a nice place to grab a quick simple bite to eat to fill the belly in this busy area of town.
It is what it is. Average Chinese food at a good price.
Freshly made milk tea was good. Beer at half the price of what you’d pay in Chinatown. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall experience. Friendly and clean. Pretty cool they still exist in London Zone 1.
Good service and workers very friendly. Especially pretty ladies with smile and good manners.
Food delicious and fantastic. Especially roast duck, crispy pork, Singapore fried noodles, and spicy food (xiang guo with pork & hui guo ruo) with rice. Food with standard size big portion too.
Will come back again..
Cheers xx
Must try! this restaurant it’s hole on the wall but oh my my my… food here is fantastic reasonable priced and on top freshly made delicious multi Asian style menu fro. Chinese to Malaysian cuisine etc.
If you look the Restaurent appearance from outside it’s small but packed with full of Delicious food.
I ordered Singaporean noodle with shrooms plus hot and sour soup and Malaysian chicken curry with white rice.
Malaysian owner Restaurant !! Good Wa tan hor... 12pound.. Price updated as of June 2023
The food was delicious and the staff was very polite. I enjoyed sitting in their restaurant it was a lovely atmosphere.
Very decent chicken chow mien for an extremely reasonable £8, especially right around the corner from South Ken tube station. Plus outside dining, which was very pleasant on a nice mild Sunday.
I have been coming here for years and always eaten extremely well. No, its not a Mayfair type restaurant, but its not trying to be. The food is straightforward and delicious and very good value. The prices have gone up recently, but where haven't they? I love this place and it saddens me there are idiots out there who give it a bad review out of ignorance and/or arrogance.
Had the duck on rice, I like how the removed the bone, and added some sauce. Cabbage was a nice touch. Right next to south Kensington station.
