There is an elegance to Cartizze that shows how well suited the bar is in Mayfair – slick interior, expensive taste and glamorous cocktails. Also a giant polar bear toy that greets you at the entrance, which gives the bar just the right level of insanity to make it a destination among the other equally slick places the neighborhood offers.

Cartizze cocktails effortlessly transport Northern Italian luxury into the winding and cobbled Mews of Mayfair.

The Vibe

As novelty streets go, Mayfair’s Lancashire Court is a sort of Made in Chelsea version of China Town; it is to upmarket cocktail bars as Jermyn Street is to four-shirts-for-£100 or Old Compton Street to questionable bondage equipment.

Whilst in Chinatown this would be a dodgy alley where the bins overflow and the cockfighting happens, being round the back of Bond Street means Lancashire Court plays host to a selection of uber-smart bars.

Cartizze Bar is half way down. Push your way through the assault course of tables from competing restaurants and bars and you enter its dark cocoon. Two things strike you immediately; the scale – it’s about the size of an Earl’s Court bedsit, and the décor, which with panelling, blacks, golds, purples and marble is as though Gordon Gekko decided to totally pimp out said Council flat. And it looks great. The bar itself, an Art Deco masterpiece of bottles, glasses, potions and flavours beckons with cocktailish promise.

The service was attentive. As, presumably, are their clientele given the two waitresses were identical blonde twin sisters. This perhaps explains why the tables behind ours were made up of regulars – bankers or similar – from a local Finance firm. On our other side, a couple of young women, all cashmere-cardigans and pearls, nattered away while the only other table available in the micro-venue played host to a date which seemed to be going well, no doubt eased along by award winning cocktail designer Richard Woods’ delicious creations.

The Order

We started out with the Olive Oil Gin Fizz and Amor Y Amargo cocktails. The Amor Y Amargo, like most of the menu is Italian inspired. It combines Amaretto, Cynar and apricot liqueur with lemon, egg white, vanilla sugar and Prosecco and is a delight. My date did the raisey-eyebrow thing when I suggested it tasted a bit like custard tart, but whatever, it was to die for. Olive oil, conversely, should surely just make you die. No coronaries later, it turned out not. It takes a lot to beat alcoholic custard tart drink, but the Olive Oil Fizz possibly pipped it to the post. Gin, lemon, lemon sugar and olive oil with egg white and Prosecco (Prosecco features heavily in the menu) mixes into a delicious house favourite.

The dainty aperitifs were also delicious. We sampled the Beef Fillet Carpaccio and the Hand Dived (eh?) Orkney Isles Scallops in Smoked Pancetta Brioche Buns – in effect mini fish burgers. The flavours combined well with the drinks and we finished up with one of the barrel-aged cocktails, a Negroni. Perhaps an adventure too far or maybe our taste buds were already overexcited. In any case, we left ready for dinner and exceptionally cheered, mainly by the cocktails (honestly, they were some of the best I’ve tasted) but possibly the twins helped too.

The Game

We arrived straight from work at six and it was basically empty but within half an hour had filled so definitely book. It’s tiny and will be chokka if you’re a walk-in. Aim to arrive around seven, sample the menu to tipsy then head to one of Mayfair’s many restaurants. Or, if she’s dull, you can easily pass it off as the main event and slip off.

For the Connoisseur, and given I just described a Richard Wood cocktail as liquid custard tart you’ve probably guessed that I’m not, Cartizze hold a privately sourced collection of spirits dating back to the 1800s. Wow them with a 1920s martini or ‘60s Vermouth.

The Faults

Check your balance before you go! We totted our bill up, taking into account a couple of refills, to over £100 for an hour’s pre-gaming. Also, as I discovered when trying to fill the Gin induced amnesia gaps for this piece, there’s no phone number. Reservations and everything is email only.

The evening started in style in the heart of Mayfair with List Leader Natalie. We made our way to Lancashire Court, the Diagon Alley of Mayfair, for the launch of Cartizze, a classy cocktail bar with a penchant for prosecco. It is tucked underneath Mayfair Pizza Co., with Mews of Mayfair and Hush also nearby in the fairytale hidden courtyard.

Cartizze is named after the revered 1000 foot high Prosecco vineyards in Veneto, and some Italian class has been brought to the bar with a Nero Marquina marble fireplace, just one detail amongst many in a stunning bar. Vintage cocktail shakers are dotted around, and the backbar is a treasure trove of glassware rather than the usual overwhelming rows of bottles one can't afford.

We were shown to our seats (table service only so worth booking ahead) and greeted with some delightful bar snacks. Master mixologist Rich Woods (UK winner of the Bombay Sapphire ‘World’s Most Imaginative Bartender’ 2014) was on hand to talk through some of his cocktail creations.

We started off with the silky smooth Olive Oil Gin Fizz (Gin, lemon, lemon sugar, olive oil, egg white prosecco) and the quirky Truffled Liquorice Sour (Chivas Whisky, lemon, egg white, liquorice, sugar, truffle). The strong truffle flavour was particularly present in the foamy head of the sour, and will definitely divide opinions. We were both very taken with it, though agreed that one might be enough. The Olive Oil Gin Fizz was sublime and Natalie was tempted to stick to it all night.

We worked our way through several more impressive cocktails, including the delicious Amor y Amargo (amaretto, cynar, apricot liqueur, lemon, egg white, vanilla sugar, prosecco), a seasonal Rhubarb (rhubarb liqueur, fresh rhubarb, prosecco), a boozy Mayfair Elegante (light rum, gin, blood orange liqueur, clarified citrus, bitters), and a seasonal Sicilian Gimlet (blood orange gin, blood orange and lemon cordial)

I took an enjoyably bitter path with a Barrel Aged Negroni, a Sbagliato (Campari, Sweet Vermouth, Prosecco) and a Mayfair Aperitivo (Punt e Mes, fresh grapefruit, orange, tonic). The barrel aged cocktails will change every now and then - ask on the night for more details.

The palate cleansing Sgroppino (limoncello sorbet, lemon verbena liqueur, prosecco) was attractively presented as three scoops of sorbet bathing in a pool of lemon liqueur & prosecco.

A lot of effort has also been put into the concise food menu, with the likes of Truffled Salted Peanuts, Tuna Tartare with Candied Chilli and Cucumber and San Daniele Ham wrapped figs with Truffle Honey & Roquette making it on to the list.

The two most theatrical dishes were the 36 month old parmesan with 12 year old balsamic vinegar and the Hand Dived Orkney Isles Scallops & Smoked Pancetta in Brioche Buns. There was enough parmesan for most of the room, and it turned up with its own smoking chamber. Meanwhile, the scallop & pancetta sliders arrived on a Himalayan salt board. Only a few months ago I had been mocking Natalie for buying one as a gift, having never heard of it before, and here one was in all its glory!

Be prepared for Mayfair prices and you will have a fantastic time at Cartizze. The location is date heaven, the cocktails & food are top notch, and the service is charming. One waitress was particularly attentive, or so we thought until we realised there were twins working the floor! The jazz soundtrack was the icing on the cake. Highly recommended!

Great snacks, lovely cocktails, perfect art deco atmosphere! A good place for a romantic date/surprise for your lady: shopping at Victorias Secret and then this bar! A bit of hectic service though, but it didn't ruin the impression.

Nice, modern bar serving excellent cocktails. Found a great offer on Timeout of 4 cocktails for £16 (Jan 17). A real steal when cocktails range from £13-£17.
