You do not expect this kind of food from the kitchen. They have amazing food, it’s not an overstatement. The fish broth soup is amazing. The whisky selection is excellent of course. Be adventurous and let the staff make some recommendations. You may find a whisky that you have never had before become your new favourite. Alex was our server and he was great. The chef made some whisky pairing recommendations which were right on point. You come here for the whisky, but you will stay for the food.

Had a really great experience for the cocktail Master class, got it as a gift from Groupon and wasn't expecting much but turn out my friend and I had a really good evening. With 4 cocktails and 3 course of small eat is quite filling by the end of it.

The most amazing food - best steak I have had in a very long time! The garlic mash, skin-on-fries, carrot (cooked with orange magic) and pressed-veg was incredible, all paired with mind-blowing whiskey and a cheeky pale ale chaser then topped with a marvelous desert. Our chef, Patrick, was so incredibly knowledgeable on not just food but whiskey... he effectively sold us more alcohol than the barman. Some of the history (and crazy names) sold themselves. All of this was perfectly wrapped up in magical atmosphere with very diligent serving staff. We will be back and so must you! Bravo!

We were there 2 weeks ago for a Sunday Roast and after living in Edinburgh for a year my partner and myself can totally say it is completely worth it going there. Excellent service, excellent food and excellent Scottish beers. We will be back for more food and to have a taste to the scotchs.

Popped in to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society on Northcote Road for dinner last night (first visit) and was blown away by the quality of the food! Everything was very fresh and the flavour combinations were delicious. The staff were very friendly and gave good food / drink recommendations (buffalo cauliflower is a game changer!). I’m not a whisky drinker, but my husband tried one of the malts of the month and really enjoyed it. The wine list is short but very high quality (the Rioja is great). Will definitely go back again!

Amazing food from start to finish: a gorgeous fish soup to start followed by perfectly-cooked pink lamb for mains, served with carrots with orange and thyme in skirlie, cabbage with anchovy butter, and chips. We sipped a whisky flight from the Highlands and a couple of experimental drams too. Exceptional service, especially from our chef, who was happy to talk us through each dish. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Went for a club social. Had venison steak with a selection of sides including some outstanding chips, mash (super garlicky) and carrots. Patrick the chef was very knowledgeable and recommended various whiskies for tasting. Would definitely recommend

My husband, son (3) and I had lunch last weekend. Not only was the food excellent, the server was very knowledgeable about the menu, including which items were gluten free. We aren’t members, but that didn’t matter. The interior is quite lovely as well. We look forward to going back for date night. As a note re kids, they are alright during the day, but not in the evening.

Hi Dan, This is Mike, the venue manager of SMWS Northcote Road here. You spoke to one of my staff on the phone the evening before (14/3) saying you just wanted to come in for drinks. At the time, we were not fully booked, and you do not need to book and to just walk in - particularly as we only take table bookings for food. We are a small venue with a limited amount of covers, so advance table bookings must be set aside for food service only. As is not uncommon we had a rash of bookings on the Friday morning for food service, including dinner service, whisky suppers and cocktail masterclasses- the latter of which take place at the bar. I was present when you entered the premises on Friday evening to be informed by my colleague, very politely, that we had no space available for the time being. All but two tables were booked beforehand and those were taken up by members and two gentleman who came in for dinner. We would have been happy to accommodate you after 9pm when some tables were freed up. Unfortunately, we were never able to relay this message to you as you decided to raise you voice and use foul language towards the staff, to voice your displeasure. I regret that we couldn’t have come to some arrangement, but Friday nights in hospitality are always busy and my colleague was in the middle of running a cocktail masterclass that a couple had paid a considerable amount of money for in advance. In future we would be happy to let you know in advance on the day if any changes with service occur, if you simply call us beforehand. Best Regards Mike
