Went there with couple of colleagues and ordered Praw Chukka, Egg Dosa, Egg Dosa with Chicken Curry, and Mutton Masala Dosa. The food was excellent, probably amplified by me missing home cooked Lankan food. Service was swift.

I have been twice to this place. Tried chola bhatura, matki kulfi, pepper chicken, devil chicken and dosa. The south indian restaurant also serves quality food as north indian. However, the lassi (buttermilk) was really a disappointment don't order that.

I would rate it 4.5. Might not have rated it that high if it was in India. But it cant more authentic for that little a cost in western country!

Had a chance to eat there after 3 weeks of bachelor cooking. So, it might tilted the scales to in it favor. Nevertheless, value for money place.

CURRYBOND
+3.5
There are a monstrous 14 CURRYBONDers eager for some spicy treats! Our venue is nice enough, comfy seats, light and airy. We get some fellow diners filing in throughout the evening creating a nice atmosphere.

Venue Score - 6.0//10.

The menu on offer looks good, and as the name suggests Dosas are prevalent. You could spend the rest of your days sampling the variety of crispy Indian pancakes on offer and many a CURRYBONDer dive in. With 14 orders flying in around the table I don't have the memory or receipt to help me recall all of our order. Suffice to say we selected a crap load of dosas, curries, pooris, oothappams, parathas and rice. The number of actual curries on offer is fairly limited to a handful of quite similar looking dark brown dishes with either chicken of lamb. The service is a bit sporadic but considering the number of CURRYBONDers we don't hold them to account even when there is widespread order vs curry confusion. The food overall is very tasty, my hot masala dosa in particular was a highlight with delicious chutneys and samba with the dosa coated in a searingly hot chilli paste. Very hot, but very good. The curries are good but not great.

Food Score - 6.8/10.

With curry remains piling high across the table we sit back and survey the damage. Good sized portions certainly and another alcohol free dinner. The bill comes in at £177 which is £12.64/CURRYBONDer, so good value but not the cheapest we've seen. It's worth pointing out Chennai Dosa is cash only but thankfully they warn you with a helpful sign on the door as you enter.

Value - 7.4/10.

So the consensus seems to be a solid curry venue, probably best suited to a lunchtime dosa rather than a curry feast. Chennai Dosa gets an

Overall Score - 6.6/10.

If you're craving South Indian food in London, this is the place to dine at. The ambiance reminds you of a typical Indian restaurant.

We ordered Chicken Dosas, Vegetarian Thali and Mango Lassi. The portions were good. I loved the Onion Rava Chicken Masala Dosa. The combination of chicken and dosa go extremely well. Even though I am not fond of Rava dosa, I loved this. The spices in the chicken masala were also well balanced.

A good place with tasty South Indian food at reasonable prices. Great for travelers or students on a budget.

16 March 2015 - Chennai Dosa: A cheeky dosa curry blogging

Yes, it's been a while, too long some might say. Nevertheless, we go onwards into 2015, continuing on our curry quest.

We haven't posted since August last year, but don't worry, we have been eating... just not anywhere new in Tooting. Most recently I was again impressed by Namak Mandi, and also got my first taste of India in November (Kerala) which reaffirmed my love of the food and opened my eyes to a host of new culinary delights.

On this occasion though, we were back in Tooting and tried Chennai Dosa for the first time. Often overlooked by us due to it's lack of alcohol, on a Monday evening that didn't seem too important.

Venue

Chennai Dosa, Tooting, is one of several in the same chain found across South East London. Situated on the corner of the main road and Foulser Road, it's bright white signage is very welcoming, and draws the eye if travelling Southbound from Tooting Bec, even with the luring lights of Spice Village in the middle distance behind.

Whilst Spice Village has recently had a refurb, sadly the same can't be said of Chennai Dosa. Inside you'll find garishly coloured window ledges, red and white warning tape covering broken mirror edges and similar, masking-tape repairs made to the chair cushions. However, I am torn (much like the chairs) about this bleak sounding eatery. On the one hand it doesn't sound pleasant, but on the other hand it evokes fond memories of similar restaurants I frequented in India, with the metallic crockery and distinctive menu only adding to this sense of nostalgia. Maybe I'm just a romantic or my nostalgia formed a pair of rose-tinted spectacles upon my nose (yes Jon Inverdale, rose-TINted), but I quite liked what I'm going to describe as the 'character' of this place.

That said, this blog and our reputation has always been based on our objectivity and integrity (my nose strangely grows as I write this), therefore, it's only right to compare like for like. In this respect, Chennai Dosa's decor doesn't compare to the likes of Spice Village. But then again the curry scene in Tooting is certainly not based on contemporary interior design (far from it), and I for one found Chennai Dosa uniquely charming and I hope others who have visited India share my thoughts and feelings upon eating here.

In the interests of a balanced view, I'll give Venue a 6 out of 10.

Starters and Sides

Chilli Fried Idly
Chicken Varuval (Medium Dry)
5 Parotta

The menu here is as authentically Indian as the interior. This is quite distinctive from the rest of the high street in so far as it doesn't try to balance the menu with your typical Anglicized dishes, (I'm looking at you chicken tikka masala!).

The starter menu is dominated by vadai (savoury fritter-type donuts), gobi (cauliflower) and dry meat dishes. Not being a huge fan of the former two, we opted for a medium dry chicken dish -the chicken varuval - and the one idly dish - the chili fried idly.

Having overlooked the fact that the idly was fried, this wasn't quite as expected. The idly itself was actually quite nice, but it came in almost a sweet and sour sauce that was more Chinese than Indian and a little odd.

The varuval was arguably the stand out dish and when scooped up with the parotta was most evocative of the dishes I'd had on holiday in Kerala, with real strong, cardamon and fennel flavours coming through. However, I don't think you wouldn't want to eat it without rice or bread.

The bread we had was parotta. Despite sounding more like an Italian footballer, parotta is actually a layered flatbread, a bit more pancake-like and stodgy than a chappati or naan. They tend to be a little greasy, but these were very good and a perfect accompaniment to the varuval and curry.

Whilst the varuval and parotta were good, the idly wasn't great and, compared to other starter menus elsewhere, Chennai Dosa's isn't overly exciting. Perhaps harsh, but I'll give a 6 for starters, particularly as the varuval was more like a curry anyway.

Curry

Special chicken curry
Special mutton curry

In a slightly criminal stance, and hiding behind our moniker of curry blog, we didn't actually try the dosa. Instead, we opted for two of the eight curries on offer. After the prawn masala was out, we asked the waiter for his recommendation and ended up with the special chicken and special mutton curries. Not giving much away with their names, upon tasting they were both decent, but slightly nondescript. The quality of the meat was ok, but difficult to tell the difference between the two beyond their colour. However, once again they tasted of the real thing and, throwing the varuval into the mix, worthy of a 7 out of 10 even if a little generous.

Service

The lads in here were much friendlier than others, quite attentive and offered recommendations willingly. It wasn't too busy and the two starters came out separately, but otherwise no complaints. 7/10.

Value For Money

Good value to be found here, both of us were amply filled for £30 including a generous tip. No beers here to add to the cost either and curries were no more than a fiver each. Perhaps other places have surprised us more with greater quantity and quality for similar prices, so a 7/10 is fair score.

Summary

My nostalgia aside, Chennai Dosa is not going to blow you away, but is a solid choice for dosas and the like for those with slightly more authentic leanings. Not the one for a big, sociable group curry, perhaps more of a lunch or breakfast choice, but nonetheless decent flavours and a nice diversion from the usual options.

When craving dosa the other day, I immediately headed to Tooting to scope out a spot to get my fix.  Spotting Chennai Dosa on a drive by, we immediately scoped out a nearby parking spot and raced in to inhale our food as fast as possible to avoid a ticket!

Luckily service is speedy and the dosas arrive before we have time to consider just how hungry we really are.  I have the chilli and coriander dosa and I was expecting it blended into the dosa a little more rather than a layer of chunks of both liberally spread inside.    The chutneys that come with the dosas though are spectacular and even the sambar is flavourful and delicious.

We leave as soon as we've eaten, spending no more than 30 minutes inside - true fast food indeed.

Canteen like atmosphere.  We had a really helpful waiter who essentially ordered for us as we are not familiar with Sri Lankan food.  We started with Manchurian Gobi, then the Special Masala Dosa, Special Boneless Chicken Curry, and a Parotta.

The Gobi or sweet and sour caulilflower was my favourite dish.  Fresh and bright.  The Dosa came with potato masala, sambar and a selection of chutneys.  The chutney's were lovely but the sambar was a little thin and bland for my taste.  The chicken curry had plenty of heat but I found it otherwise a little dull and wouldn't order it again.  The Parotta bread was fantastic.  It reminded me of the layered chive pancakes in the Chinese kitchen.

Spectacularly good value.  Lunch for two came to £16.

Do be careful in the toilets.  They weren't kidding with the sign that says floor might be slippery when wet.  The tiles had just been mopped and it was like a skating rink in there.

Had a large gathering here and was surprised that it was so cheap. Dosas are incredible. No alcohol available or allowed. That could be why the bill was so reasonable.

This place has authentic south Indian food. The service is very quick and the staff are friendly. The food is also quite cheap making it a great find. Although the ambiance isn't anything special, the food really is worth at least one visit. Being a veggie lover, I love that the entire menu is vegetarian! I love their idli, sambar, and dosas and am hoping to try their whole menu eventually.

Great food- my partner and I eat here regularly, often with his 10 year old daughter (She is a big dosa fan) the food is really delicious, often quite spicy but always well flavoured, served by friendly staff in basic but perfectly fine surroundings. We have only noticed one or two slips in food or service on busy nights which is totally forgivable given the miniscule price tag! Well worth a visit, It's often less crowded and certainly with better food than most of the places on the Broadway in tooting.

A nice little restaurant with authentic indian dishes. Do remember to ask for the ghee dosa - an amazing crepe with chutney that tastes great . Service is quick and the place is neat and tidy . Economical to the pocket as well. One star less - because its small and cannot accommodate large crowds.

Good food, good value, large portions so be careful you don't get carried away, although you can always take it away with you. No alcahol is served here for religious reasons but they have lots of other beverages available from standard soft drinks, to tea and lassies. Make sure you do have some dosa they are exceptionally tasty and good fun.

This is one of family favourites for many years now when it comes to south Indian food in London this is the place. There are few more branches of this restaurant else where but this is local to us. The staff is polite, patient and helpful & food is best if one likes south Indian.

The only reason i gave a 5star is for the one man army service the guy with beard, fair skin, Hindi speaking does. I live nearby and i have been at the restaurant many times the food is alright but the service that the beard guy give is incredible, i think he is the manager well dressed up and welcoming. sadly i can say himself handling so many table is quite unfair.

As a South Indian I find their food the best in Tooting by far. The weekend breakfast buffet is great value for money - on of the best meals in London for less than 10 GBP. The dosas are nice crisp and hot and the filter coffee is as it would be in South India

I regularly enjoy the buffet and other times order something different to stretch my palette. Tonight was kal dosa with tamarind curry. Really great and totally different. As others have said, the prices are hard to beat.

£5 weekend brekkie gains this place an extra star. While the ambience isn't the reason you'd go there, the South Indian vegetarian fare (unlimited buffet for a fiver) is easily the best value for money I've come across in London.

Absolutely outstanding. I went to school Ootacamund (Ooty) in South India for 13 years. I was born in India and lived there 18 years in total. As an 'expert' in Indian, and particular South indian, food I can honestly say this is one of the best I have tasted inside or out of India. The service was quick and friendly, the food was amazing and the choice was awsome. The prices are brilliant too. Highly recommended.

Great dosai, big portions, tremendous value. When I visited a few years ago no alcohol was allowed which knocked me for six. Their menu says they now serve the crazy juice so perhaps it's time to revisit?
