Oh this was the best desi meal ever !!
They’re pretty serious about what they serve, we went on a weekday night and the place was bustling.
Were attended and placed on a table right away, we haven’t had desi in ages so were excited our pashtun roots also bawling at us to order almost everything on the menu.
So we had a mix grill, chicken karahi, chapli kebab all absolutely delicious!!!!
They’ve an open kitchen food is cooked in front of you ... you get to see the grill being done and chapli kebab being tossed in oil !!! Drool away from the phone ....

Oh the meal ends with Peshawari Qehwa with gurr.
Superb place, decent service great value for money !!

Namak Mandi you beauty 🤗 The best ever delicious and mouth watering Pakistani taste in London. Boneless peshawari karahi Chappali kabab and afghani Palao with tremendously simple but cosy presentation. Just one thing because of small space you'll have to wait for your turn to have fun.

Best lamb karahi in Tooting I reckon, though the chicken equivalent is a bit bland. Highly recommend the mixed grill and the chapli kebabs are outstanding. The afghani naan is huge and delicious when fresh but gets a little hard by the time you get home for a takeaway. Service is ok but could be better.

CURRYBOND
+3.5
Our latest outing is what CURRYBOND is all about. Namak Mandi sits close to Tooting Bec and sandwiched behind a bus stop and between the myriad of pound shops in Tooting for all your plastic mop needs. You would be forgiven for walking past Namak Mandi not realising the potential spicy delights waiting for you inside. But for CURRYBOND all are welcome.

We therefore approach our venue with mild trepidation and cautious optimism in equal measure. From the entrance Namak Mandi certainly looks more takeaway than restaurant, but we pass the chef manning the grill and take our seats in the somewhat dim area towards the back. There is apparently a soft furnished seating area upstairs but not having been to yoga class in a good 12 years my knees decide they need proper chairs. There's not a great deal of "vibe" with a handful of other patrons appearing so overall the venue scores come in a little low.

Venue score - 4.0/10.

Nonetheless, we press on with our ordering and get stuck into the menu on offer. It arrives with a thud, an impressive wooden slate surely concealing a treasure trove of curry delights. The first page, a laminated affair looking like your average takeaway. Next page, hmm nice picture from the orient, then another and another...no more menu then. So just the one page in our wooden compendium and therefore not a great deal of choice on offer. Six grilled dishes, four curries, five veggies dishes and some common sides. As we have seven CURRYBONDers due around the table we say screw it, let's have one of everything!

On order then we have, the mixed grill (Chicken Tikka, Lamb Tikka, Lamb Chops, Lamb Kofta), Lamb Karahi, Charsi Chicken Karahi, Chicken Curry, Charsi Chicken Tikka Masala. Unfortunately no bhaji for the latest verse of the bible but we line up a couple of naan and a pilau rice dish which turns out to be huge and hides a secret, succulent joint of lamb beneath!

The mixed grill is ok, a little dry all round. The curry however is very tasty. The Karahi come in proper steel dishes the chicken is served for two and is well spiced with tender pieces. The Tikka Masala is quite sweet, very mild but pretty good. The highlight however comes when the naan arrives. We get two metal stands with giant naan breads hanging off which I expected to pipe up ala Mighty Boosh..."not you Naan Bread!". So generally we're pretty happy with our limited curry selection. Namak Mandi gets a

Food Score - 6.7/10.

With just five portions of curry and one giant rice between seven we actually finish the majority of the food on offer! That being said the portions are good. There are also no drink drinks on offer again so our bill comes in at a ridiculously reasonable £58.85 that's just £8.41 per CURRYBONDer!

Value Score - 8.3/10.

So to sum up Namak Mandi, I certainly wouldn't choose it for a date night, but for a hardened curry veteran this is certainly worth a visit. Namak Mandi gets an

Overall Score - 6.6/10.

Namak mandi is truly a hidden gem,was discovered by my husband's friends and we then treated our family to a dinner at this cozy place.
We ordered the Charsi tikka,Chapli kebab and the Charsi Karahi with Nans. The food was freshly prepared right in front of us and each bite of it was delicious.
There were just 2 staff members, one was the chef and the other one was serving us but inspite of that there was no delay or no mismanagement. Courteous staff and very efficient.
If you are looking out for good homemade fresh and clean Peshawari Afghani food then this is THE place to visit.
*don't expect a 5 star place,it's a basic restaurant but the taste,freshness and hygiene is a guarantee.

Namak Mandi is an awesome place for families and friends. The food is just Outstanding. I have been to this restaurant a couple of times and loved it every time I went there.
The best thing about this restaurant is that it is much different to other restaurants in tooting. Most of the food are made fresh in front of you. The most tastiest food is the lamb and chicken karahi. It is the best karahi that I have had for a long time.
Furthermore, their chapli kebab an kabli pilao are so delicious. I loved their seating upstairs where you sit and eat on the floor. It was so relaxing.

The most delicious food. We have been to Namak Mandi twice now and feel qualified to write a glowing review. This restaurant definitely needs to be credited for its delicious Peshwar dishes. The menu is shorter than most of the Tooting curry spots which is always a good sign and everything we have tried has been freshly prepared and excellent. The lamb curry in a karahi dish is well worth the 20 min that it takes to be cooked, the lamb on the bone is succulent and the gravy is rich and spiced to give it a good kick but not blow your head off.

I don't think you can drink alcohol but that is not a problem as the complimentary tea is excellent. The decor is less canteeny than other places around here and there are some private rooms upstairs for a group to sit on the floor in I guess the traditional Peshwar way.

Well worth a visit!

Namak Mandi is definitely a hidden gem. It is an Afghani restaurant, which has also incorporated some Indian cuisines on its menu.

My friend took me here, because she said the food was really good. However, as soon as we reached, I didn’t have many high hopes, judging from the outside of the restaurant. It didn’t look clean and the staff didn’t look professional.

It’s not your average restaurant because the seating area is upstairs where there are dining sections divided by curtains, so everyone has a very intimate experience.

The interior incorporates a Middle Eastern décor theme and mattresses are set out on all fours of the closed seating section because you sit on the floor to eat.

The freshly made Afghani bread was my favorite, however it doesn’t have a wide range of afghan food on the menu but I recommend having the kabili pilaw.

Service was also very good, there was always someone outside willing to help and staff were very friendly.

So don’t judge a restaurant by the outside and definitely give this place a visit. I will be going back ASAP, as the food was delicious and prices were decent.

Well to be honest, I don't really know how to start this review because the food thy I had at namak mandi was just awesome. I had been to many restaurants in tooting such as spice village, Al mirage and Lahore karahi; but namak mandi just beat all of them
The upstairs seating was so comfortable and relaxing as it had cushions and mattresses, I felt like as if I am at home eating this gorgeous food. I came with my family and we sat in the private room upstairs so there is no noise to disturb to us. Actually the room quite well decorated as well!!!
We ordered namak mandi lamb karahi, chapli kebabs, kabli pilau and a big naan bread. The naan was so massive that it needed a special to hung the naan onto. I have no words to describe the food. I was absolutely speechless when I started eating the food as the food was sooo delicious. I had never tried afghani food but namak mandi has now made me to try afghani food again and again. I would definitely visit this place again as my experience of namak mandi was absolutely brilliant.

30 January 2014 - Namak Mandi: O Mandi, you came and you gave me a curry

For our first Tooting curry of the new year, we opted for a fairly recent addition to the scene, Namak Mandi. On this occasion, we were joined again by Liam Cory, a TCB veteran from our Sree Krishna pilgrimage. After a cheeky ale in The Wheatsheaf we made our silky way over the road to Tooting's very own Afghani restaurant, Namak Mandi, for 'a taste of Peshawar'.

Venue

It never ceases to amaze me what is crammed into some of the convenience stores in Tooting, least not Namak Mandi which is found squashed between the oddly named Universal Store Pound Plus and Universal All In One Convenience Store. Much like its tardis-like neighbours, there's more to Namak Mandi than meets the eye. If you can navigate your way around the tat that's piled up outside the shops next door, and the bus stop attendees outside the entrance, you'll discover a hidden gem on the Tooting curry scene.

Upon entry the aroma hits you, as flavour sizzles up from the kitchen that flanks the left hand wall. Just in front of which is a cushioned lounge area for the regulars, who flaunt their curry house prestige like Amsterdam’s female window dressers - with a surprising sense of propriety. Unperturbed by these rabble rousers, we were shown to the back, past a few, but crowded tables.

We were quickly handed colourful menus that were bordered with pictures of the food and a poster behind our table welcomed us with pictures of the Peshawar region. The other walls were similarly draped with homely, Afghan fabrics and ornaments. However, the real charm is to be found upstairs. Only at the end of the meal did we make this discovery when popping to the gents. For a minimum spend of £20 (easily done) you can sit in one of several cushion-lined, curtained-off,. lounge areas for a real, authentic, Afghan tea house experience.

We left aghast at having missed out on this opportunity and that it wasn't offered to us by the staff (we can only imagine that they were too lazy to take the food upstairs). Nevertheless, the smells wafting from the open kitchen and the unique menu are still enough to turn this unassuming little restaurant into one worth visiting…but definitely sit upstairs. 7/10

Starters and Sides

Peshawari Chapli kebab
Peshawari Butter Naan
Mixed Grill
Large Pilau Rice
Afghan Tea

For starters we had a chapli kebab and mixed grill of chicken tikka, lamb tikka, lamb chops and kofte kebabs. Despite others raving about chapli kebabs, they're yet to win us over. Our view is that they're like deep fried lamb burgers, which might satisfy the Scottish amongst you, but our preference is a good mixed grill. Namak Mandi's didn't let us down, with a unique touch of lamb on the bone that packed a spicy punch. This wasn't the only surprising lamb as there was a whole braised leg hidden in our epic portion of pilau. The naan was equally large, so big, in fact, it needed to be hung on it's own custom built stand. Then to top it all, we received complimentary kahwah - Afghan green tea - a necessary digestif after all the lamb. 7/10 for starters and sides.

Curry

Namak Mandi Lamb Karahi
Charsi Chicken Tikka Masala

Lamb was again on the menu for the mains as we tucked into a cavernous karahi of Namak Mandi's signature lamb, a dish whose physical depths were matched by it's deep, rich flavour. The chicken dish wasn't as large, but was still generously sized and of a high standard. Both were clearly freshly prepared, which cannot be said of most curries on the high street - a strong score as a result 8/10.

Service

The solitary chef was welcoming as we came in, but the other staff were less vocal. Nevertheless, they got the job done, albeit one a little clumsily (one made a huge save from dropping a load of plates and knocked into a table a few times). Also we had a bit of a wait for our food, but they did set our expectations and the food was fresh as a result. In general, it was a more relaxed affair, as the complimentary tea reflected, so we weren't too irritable. However, we remain slightly bitter about not being led upstairs - who doesn't want two moustached, old Afghan men leading them into a dark, curtained off area? 6/10.

Value For Money

Everything in this place is set up for sharing so, accordingly, value for money ranks highly. Like Soviets we were left defeated by the Afghans, such was the quantity consumed. Our second naan didn't even make it to the table as I couldn't face it hanging there, mocking us. As it came to a about £15 a head with nice bonuses in the tea and rice-hiding lamb we can't rate VFM low - 8/10.

Summary

Namak Mandi is a genuine alternative to other curries on the high street and with sharing sized portions, cushioned lounge areas and great value for money this is a highly recommended, sociable curry venue. We weren't even bothered that we couldn't drink, meaning this praise is even offered sober! A great feed and an authentic feel, try it yourself, but you may have to do some kite running after to burn off all the lamb. 36/50

I completely hate the concept of there enclosed rooms however credit must be given for the food, ITS MIND BLOWING.

Easily the best Pakistani/Indian dishes in Tooting. The chicken and lamb Karahi are amazingly good, they have a very small menu but everything is exceptional tasty and cooked perfectly.

Only if they had a better restaurant that was more cozy and comfortable, i dnt like the idea of sitting on the floor and eating in closed booths. But the food itself pulls me there all the time.

They should defiantly start a delivery service, its soo much needed.

If you want to make sure you walk out a Pakistani restaurant feeling completely satisfied and want to go for the most authentic lamb karahi. i also picked the traditional rice kabli pilao, Peshawri chapli Kebab and the mix grill. Pair that with Tandoori naan, and a jug of mango Lassi

Spice Village has a special offering - green Tea which is quite delicious as well. Do not miss this if you visit Namak Mandi. I would say the quantity of the food very good and it reminded me of the food that i had ate in the Namak Mandi which is in Peshawar. The Staff were friendly, prompt service and as you already know the quality of food was excellent. Namak Mandi is great for family dining or group dining options.

My absolute favourite dish is Kabli Pulao, and let me tell you, this restaurant in London really knows how to make it stand out! Not only is the flavour absolutely incredible, but the portion sizes are so generous. What truly sets this place apart, though, is the fact that they actually give out free dessert and Afghan tea. Can you believe it? It's such a delightful British twist that I absolutely love! 🇸🇴

Wonderful food, everything was very tasty, well cooked and fresh. The portions are decent, the meats are tasty and the fresh (gigantic) naan was a great compliment to our mains. This place had been on my 'Go To' list for a long time! I finally went with the guys on Saturday. It was worth the wait. The experience started the moment we walked in and got a whiff of the chapli kebabs being fried in the kitchen. The kitchen was definitely a sight! We had a 4 person booking and we were seated in a private room. It felt like being at home with the lads. The food itself was on point! We got: 1 chapli kebab, lamb chops, charsi chicken karahi, seekh kebab karahi, kabli pilao, a large naan and mango lassi. The kebab was to die for! The seekh kebab karahi was delicious and the lamb chops were succulent and was very well complimented by the lemons. The green tea at the end was a much needed palette cleanser. This is a must go for anyone looking for an authentic Peshawari food experience! I'll be coming back with a bigger group next time!

Atmosphere- family friendly, have sitting area upstairs where you can sit crossed legged and share a meal as a group. It can get very busy downstairs as there is limited seating.

We went here for dinner and sat in one of the private rooms upstairs. Food was delicious, mixed grill was great, curries were tasty (a bit spicy), rice was excellent and so was the bread. Overall a really nice dinner. My only feedback would be to clean the area and refresh it more as the upstairs room did not smell great which can get in the way of enjoying your dinner .
