Very yummy Chinese food with generous portions. We ordered rice for 3 with our meal but could have ordered less. The Singapore fried rice noodles were a little spicy so perhaps ask for mild ones if you don't like spicy food. We will return.
Untuk teman-teman yang pergi ke London, aku bener2 merekomendasikan restoran ini!!!!
Restoran ini ada di china town. Gampang banget pokoknya ditemuin. Aku pesan cold crispy belly pork and roasted duck on hot rice.
I love Wong Kei!
Craving authentic chinese taste in middle of London, Wong Kei is the best restaurant to find.
The taste of the Peking duck is awesome, and the price is super cheap (£4.5 for 1 portion duck rice)
Even the service is really bad and rude,
I never get bored to eat here (because the taste can’t lie and find). I just hope they improve their service, it can be a great deal for the restaurant.
Feeling Nostalgic.... a place close to my heart.... Good food, Lump some quantity , service is like a virgin bullet train....Totally worth it..
Really nice authentic tasting Chinese food. Lemon chicken was damn exciting and sweet corn soup was delicious. A recommended place for foodies. It doesn’t come across as a warm place to dine but it’s seriously scrumptious.
A quite remarkable dining experience.
Apart from tourists it’s mostly Chinese people eating here, which speaks volumes about the authenticity of the food.
There are a few floors to this restaurant and you basically get sent up or down or wherever there’s space. Some of the tables hold about 12 or more people. I often ate with strangers at these tables and loved it.
The beer comes in a can, opened if the waiter likes you, if not, open it yourself!
They don’t speak much English but the menu is vast and explains exactly what’s what.
It’s a fast, noisy, frenetic place to eat amazing food at great prices.
It’s not that clean in there but I’ve never been sick yet.
The bathrooms do make me a bit queasy though...
Highly recommend this restaurant if you’re planning a trip to Chinatown, London, England... My beloved home town.
You can take the girl outta London but you can’t take London out of the girl...
I've been going to this place for years- it's cheap, it tastes good and it's in a nice area to visit. I have read so many reviews that complain about the service or the staff, but in all my 15+ years going here, I have never had a problem with them. My favourite dish here is the noodle soup. I suppose the only negative thing about this place is that when it's packed you're usually seated with another group of people, and it can be seriously awkward if you go here alone. I would recommend not being put off by this fact and just enjoy the food.
The food is delicious. I tried duck rice and beef brisket noodles and love them. The chilli oil is fantastic! It’s as good as Kin Kin’s dry chilli. I really don’t like how rude the staff are. Food is great but service is bad. Price is reasonable but it keeps going up.
The setting maybe poor. But the food is cheap, fast and always of the same standard. You shoudl not go in expecting wonderful food, and not even a place you should really expect to stay long in. But for what it is, I love Wong Kei. A spot for quick, cheap food thats actually filling. Portions are generous. Especially good when lunchtime is short!
Lets face it, no where else is going to give you the portions Wong Kei serves, at the speed it does, at the price it does!
I went in to Wong Kei with low expectation, but also with hungry stomach. The food didn't disappoint at all! We only tried the bbq items on rice, and it was actually good and with big portion. Vancouver has set the bar quite high for Chinese food with the large population of Chinese immigrants. London has come close to it too in terms of diversity in ethnic foods. It's always heartwarming to have good Chinese food when travelling. Wong Kei has quick cheap tasty food. Who cares about the service as long as it doesn't give me stomach ache :D
If you're a saddo who just likes polite service don't come here. However if you're a proper person who loves rude and funny service then this place is an absolute must.
A big thumbs up from a person coming from Hong Kong! This places reminds me of the typical food we get in Chinese restaurants back in HK! Price is reasonable, it will be better if the food is shared among a group of people! So that you can try multiple dishes on one go!!
I've been invited by a dear friend to have lunch here, she used to have her meals at this place few decades ago when she was a student and was curious to try it again. Her memories haven't been disappointed. Huge portions of food for a very cheap price (good when you are on a budget) and an amazingly fast service. The staff haven't been rude at all, but with her ordering in Chinese I didn't expected problems. The quality is astonishing, we shared a noodles soup and a beef ho fun and ended up bloated and liking my fingers. Goodbye buffets, hello Wong Kei!
Cheap and quick. Wong Kei is famed for poor customer service - but I can't see why really. Anyone that's been to a mid to low-end restaurant in HK will tell you that it's the standard service you get. Wong Kei may actually be a bit better than that. If your definition of customer service is smiley faces, then no, you don't get that. But many people seem to forget that efficiency is also part of customer service, and Wong Kei is exceptional at that. So, at least they get one part of customer service right?
I've been to Wong Kei several times, and last time I had the roast duck with rice for takeaway - cost just a fiver and big enough to last me 2 meals! That worked out to just £2.5 per meal. And actually the guys behind the counter were not rude at all. OK they didn't make small talk. But I was hungry, I wanted food, and they gave me food, quickly. That works for me.
I love this place. Used to eat there twice a week when was living in London in the 90. Chicken sweet corn soup, and singapore fried noodles were the best! Can't wait to get back!
Loved the food, and the service was super fast. There was a long line because it was during the Chinese New Year celebrations, but we got right in. It was a cold there though because of the crowd of people coming in and out. But the food was really really good.
Wong Kei is a classic of Chinatown. I have eaten here regularly since the late '70s when I was a student in London. The service is matter-of-fact and very efficient. I have always chosen the barbecue pork noodle soup, which is a tasty meal in itself. Based on Ian's review above, I will try the singapore noodles. WK is not a place for a lingering romantic liaison, but it's a fine cafe.
Sharing a table is O.K.. So what if you have to share a table? I have always been happy with my fellow table occupants. The food is good as is the service. I keep going there every time I am in London.
Love it!. Renowned for it's 'attitude', I think this place & it's staff are cracking! The food is cheap & not bad really. You go here for the experience & the 'tude you get from the staff. Cant wait for next te!
Upstairs or downstairs is good for me. Wong Kei is one of those places that people get passionate about. Introduced to it by a friend of mine who said, "If you don't like it, I don't wanna know!" Now apparently this was the same kind of attitude one would receive from the waiters of old but I have never experienced that.
Set in the heart of Chinatown, just off Shaftesbury Avenue, the waiters seem to know exactly where they want you to go, calling "Upstairs" or "Downstairs" for your table, which like in some Asian restaurant you may have to share with another party.
They have their traditional "tourist" menu, where they probably make their money but regulars will always choose their favourite dish and order it on rice. Mine is always the Sweet and Sour Chicken on rice with a drizzle of the chilli oil to give it an extra kick.
I have come to love the free tea that is supplied, but a glass of their house white is crisp and dry and accompanies your meal well. It's cash only but very cheap so a tenner from an ATM will be sufficient for one.
Consistantly Good Food. Affordable, great atmosphere the staff have real character, great food. Ideal for a big party of 8 or the two of you who want more than just a quiet table for 2.
I first came here in 1988, it hasn't changed much, apart from some of the crazy waiters have got a bit older and wiser!
Great Value, highly recommend
Cheap and tasty. Great place if you want the chinese version of fast food served in "minimalistic" surroundings by less than attentive staff but the food is good, tasy, fast and cheap.
Worth going down the stairs but no jokes about the water feature resembling a leaky pipe, they don't get the joke. They don't get the joke of the name of the place either strangley enough.
Be prepared!! Good food, good prices but not so good customer service!! We got verbally attacked just for ordering and before we had even finished ordering the menus were whisked away from us..it was then a scary task to ask for the menu back. All of this banter aside it is a funny experience!!
Love going here, mainly to watch other customers shock at the way the staff bang about! They can be incrdibly rude but this is part of the fun of going there- if you haven't seen a waiter shout at a customer In wong kei's then you've not experienced it fully! Food is good, cheap, lots of it. Down side? Bit too much MSG, need a gallon of water about half hour after you've eaten!
Biggest in Chinatown. A favourite when i was a student, returned for the nostalgia. Didn't stay, I didn't fancy it, think my standards have changed slightly in 20 years.
Still got a soft spot in my heart though!
I like it mainly because it's odd. The food is as good as any take away, and the abrupttness of the staff is what has come to be expected.
I've been going to the Wong Kei for over twenty years. It's my favourite Chinatown eatery although you need one or two visits to get used to the "uniqueness" of it. Try the fried quai due!
What: Chinese Restaurant
Where: Leicester Sq
Value: £10pp
Food Review: The food comes in big portions and cheap prices. It delivers a range of chinese food. The seafood is plentiful and the the noodles thick and filling. With so many people coming to the restaurant the food is still to a high standard and fresh ingrediants are used. The main courses, such as seafood noodles are more hearty and only 1 plate is needed per person.
Settings Review: Located off busy china town, this large restaurant has 5 floors and most of the time has a substantial amount of people. What makes this a unique restaurant is its ability to allow people to dine alone as the ground floor is dedicated to single diners. Ok yes you may have to share a table, but this just adds to the experience. The decor is minimal and houses the most basic of furniture.
Positives: cheap, quick
Negatives: you may have to sit next to strangers, not the most friendliest of staff
3 Word Review: Quick, Cheap, Tasty
Surrounded by a plethora of Chinese restaurants, Won Kei certainly stands out from the crowd for its excellent food and hospitable staff. This is a definite visit for any visitor to the China Town area or for anyone who is in need of a good Chinese meal at an affordable price.
Upon entry into the restaurant, one would probably notice the rather dated interior and plastic feel. Don't let that put you off as the food aims to impress and compensates for its old look. Another noticeable difference in the restaurant is that it operates on a table sharing scheme, whereby some customers would join other customers at a large table. This usually happens during busy periods so if this is not to your fancy, try and get to the restaurant before 6:30PM.
Once sat down you'll be provided a complimentary cup of Chinese tea which is refilled on a regular basis. The drink is a light and herbal concoction and most certainly puts you in the mood for a good meal.
The menu is truly diverse and I would suggest to take time to look at the menu as it truly does cater to all taste buds. From rice dishes to noodle dishes as well as meat dishes and vegetarian meals, there truly is something for everyone. My personal favourite is the wonton soup which is a generous helping of wontons in a light and filling broth. If going in a large group, there is also the option to have a set menu which may work better price wise as well as the option to savour more dishes.
The real appeal of this restaurant is the quality food and the price. While the interior and shared seating may scare some people, it's certainly worth a visit and the food will definitely not let you down.
Cheap Chinatown stalwart. I love this place. Sometimes you just NEED a mountain of noodles for £6 and right in the centre of town. The service is usually a bit rubbish and the decor isn't great. Had the Ho Fun Malaysian Style last night and it was fresh and gingery.
Wong Kei is notorious (even on its Wikipedia article... go check!) for its rude staff, but that is part of the package at this place. The restaurant sprawls over four or five levels and is literally the cheapest place you will ever eat. You can order the hugest plate of rice and meat for the change in your pocket and leave so full you can barely walk, but you will never, until the sun dies and the universe implodes upon itself, draw a smile from any of the waiting staff.
I love this place, but I feel I have a duty to report an anecdote from my girlfriend: Her pancakes were brought out in a wooden basket covered in ants! When she told the staff they impassively took it away (no apologies, of course), REMOVED the pancakes and placed them in a new basket and brought this new basket back to her! That about sums Wong Kei up.
So so so great food! We usually don’t eat Chinese food when traveling since we live in Taiwan. But my husband took me here because he had Chinese food for the first time here many many years back. All the dishes that we ordered were all very tasty and packed with flavor. We really loved their Singaporean fried rice noodles that we dined here twice while we were in London! Great portion and reasonable price which was a big bonus. People complained that staffs are rude but it’s actually part of their trademark. It’d be odd if they’re being polite! They only take cash payments so prepare ahead but you won’t be disappointed with the food.
Tummies filled with 2 plates of freshly cooked healthy food for £19.80 did not disappoint as always. Service has mellowed over the years. My first experience was going back 40 years ago.
Been hearing about this legendary place for a while. I had prepared myself for the infamous service (I thought it was a chinese version of Karen's Diner 😅) which later would be redeemed by authentic chinese dishes. But everything turned out good. Service was not the best, but more than tolerable. Dishes were all good that I came for two days in a row.
I ordered mapo tofu and boiled rice during my first visit and beef brisket on boiled rice and hot & sour soup during my second one. My husband ordered cold BBQ pork, crispy belly pork, and roasted duck on boiled rice. Please do try their chili oil. It's THE BEST.
Overall, good experience. Good food.
This is a Chinese institution they have been around forever.
Not much has changed in terms of decor but I am glad to see that they are still going strong after the last few difficult years.
When you sit down you receive free green tea and the orders come fairly quickly.
Just make sure that you bring cash as they still and probably won’t be accepting card.
I guess the day when cash is banned is the day they will close their doors for good 🤣 until then give Wong Leo a try as the food is cheap and good.
A friend reccomended it to us and she said that the worker were rude so we expect it already. As soon as we seated they gave us jasmin tea which i thought at first was a tasteless soup thats why i added abit of soya and chili🤭.. We had quarter duck as starter(good and cheap),singapore noodle(just ok) and duck and pork bbq with rice(big portion of rice)The waitress was unfriendly by the way just saying.. still want to go back.
Legendary Wong Kei in China Town. they were closed for a few months and have recently reopened. New menu, new prices but food is still great 👍. We've been going there for the last 15 years and always enjoyed the Monks vegetable dish and pay choi with oyster sauce. Also, the king prawn with blackbean sauce is very delicious. Quick and efficient service.
We went to Wong Kei today, we haven’t been here for many years. Food are good, actually better than before. The dry fried Ho fun with beef is simply above average. Staff are polite, tables and walls are clean. Food comes quickly.
Wong Kei - over all 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Food quality is quite nice and price is very reasonable. Really recommend you to come if you want to get food in quickly with a cheap price, there is exactly the place that you are looking for.
We order three dishes to share.
Stir-fried beef with noodles 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Can’t believe it taste really good and even better that I tried in Hong Kong! It is really delicious and impressed me! You can see from the picture, this is really a very big potion and taste really outstanding! Not very oily and not very salty, colour looks really good, beef taste good also. I will definitely come visit again for this amazing noodle.
Hong Kong Style Sweet and Sour Pork 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Hong Kong Style one that means is boneless pork. It taste very good and very refreshing but compared to the noodles this potion is a bit smaller and not many pork inside. Most of the pork are quite small one.
Hong Kong style Roast BBQ Pork 🌟🌟
A very big potion but taste funny. It is cold one and the pork are too skinny and colour looks not very attractive. And I can’t taste anything with the pork…it is quite disappointing me.
All staffs are quite rude. One of the lady keep playing with her phone all the time. The others staff talking to the customers very impolite. Service are disappointing but food is cheap. So if you are looking for some Chinese food with a very reasonable price you can try Wong Kei.
CASH ONLY. Always heard good things about this place. It's quick and delicious British/Chinese food. Speedy service with incredible depth of flavour. We had the quarter Peking duck with delectable crispy skin, grilled pork (deep fried) in Hong Kong sauce - sweet, sticky but delicious. Fried aubergine in black bean and a spring onion/green bean mix with garlic and spinach. Two beers and tea on arrival. With each 3 mins, someone new was walking in. Plenty for leftovers and would go back in a heartbeat.
It's Wong Kei. It's great value. It's in the centre. The food is standard. The place is informal. You may share a table with strangers. Free tea is a bonus.
Awesome Food!!! The foods are perfect for Asians. Suited to the taste. Compared the same food with Four Season, this is comparable, but at a lower price!
Classic cantonese dishes, good value, fast service, tasty unlimited chilli oil, free chinese tea
