A cosy lil japanese place under the rail bridge.
We just happened to be in that area so dropped by. It was a rather odd hour so we couldn’t order a whole meal but we tried their Gyoza and another side but what i liked most about the place was actually their chilli oil. I love spicy food and it was the perfect accompaniment. I think they bottle n sell that too.
I have heard a lot about their Ramen and freshly made noodles but maybe we’ll go back for those another time.

Went here for a quick lunch on a Sunday, so there wasn’t any crowd in this restaurant whatsoever, and I can easily get a table (a big table for myself anyway!). I ordered a Tonkotsu ramen, which is a salt-based pork stock ramen topped with pork belly slices, soft-boiled eggs, menma (bamboo shoots), bean sprouts, and spring onions.

The flavour was rich and thick, something you might expect from a Tonkotsu ramen. The noodle was silky and thin, a perfect combination with the soup. The toppings were adequate, which were good for me. I would love to try the gyoza and the varieties of sides on my next visit!

Ramen was very delicious. I Liked how cosy the place was. Very nice dumplings too. They also have their special sauce, which i highly recommend.

Definitely my favourite ramen restaurant in London. Nothing pretentious about this place, just nice and simple. I had the seafood ramen and it was just done right: homemade noodles, fresh fish and good broth. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant: white wall with minimal lighting and enough space bewteen the tables.I paid 32 pounds for 2 ramen dishes and 2 drinks (including 12.5% service charge). Good quality for money

With no signage outside yet you might just walk right past Tonkotsu; let's not be coy, this Mare St location, home to a Primark, Greggs and some other odd shops, is not exactly an obvious choice for a trendy ramen bar.

Once I established it definitely was open, I pushed through the door to be greeted by a plaid shirt wearing waiter, a long, slick dining room, and a strong whiff of paint- definitely no denying it's brand spanking new! Dining alone, I was seated at one of the counters, but there's plenty of room for large groups too.

The menu is succinct- four ramens, two types of gyoza, and a couple of sides; just the snappy list I like during the confines of a one hour lunch break. I ordered a seafood ramen- the broth was rich but some might find a tad salty, the clams, prawn (sadly singular) and few pieces of squid were all nicely cooked- nothing rubbery to report here. The highlight though were the noodles themselves which they make inhouse using some snazzy looking machine. They had what my mother would call 'bite' by which she means they have a bit of bounce to them, hold their shape and don't disintegrate into a big slimy mush. Pretty crucial when your noodles are sitting in soup.

I slurped it all up happily and will definitely be back for another work day lunch- though it won't be everyday at £11 before service (though they didn't include it this time).

Me and my friend went for a meal here yesterday and I cannot recommend this place enough. The staff is super friendly, nice and very helpful. The atmosphere is welcoming and cozy. And the food absolutely blew me away. Absolutely delicious full of flavour and satisfyingly filling. Will come back soon!

Our go to place after music lessons. Really happy that they’ve introduced the smaller ramen bowls so we can also have the chicken Kara age without eating too much.

Dark, narrow layout, but the staff do a good job of brightening the place up. The food was as expected, having visited a couple other branches, but I won't be going for the chilli chicken ramen again - too light. What's a bowl of ramen without the glugging of a rich, thick pork broth at the end? The chilli oil/paste is top tier here, mind. Slap it on everything.

A very pleasing find. ☺️ Wonderful food and great service. A cool Japanese style venue. It's not huge but then neither are most Tokyo ramen places! 🤣 Really good Ramen with authentic broth and fantastic gyoza. 👌 I hope to go again sometime.

Myself and my misses popped in on a wim and it was rather pleasant. The server was lovely and we both enjoyed the food. A good spot if you haven’t made plans and are feeling hungry.

This was such a great discovery in Hackney! Lovely restaurant with a very friendly staff and great food! The best ramen I had so far in London! Also try the "East Side" dessert, it is worth it, as well as your visit!

We dined at the Tonkotsu in Kentish Town when it was first opened. The experience was not memorable, and therefore we haven't visited the other locations. Our expectations weren't high when we visited Tonkotsu Mare Street, but I was pleasantly surprised! I ordered their Indian-Japanes inspired special and it was delicious! It's a little on the salty side, but the broth was rich and thick with a nice balance of Indian curry flavor. The staff was friendly and the service was great!

(2023) I went for dinner on a Monday evening: the place is nice, a long space with an open kitchen and opposite that, a cool drawing that takes the entire wall. I had the Tonkotsu ramen bowl, which had robust flavours with a tasty broth. To drink, a refreshing yuzu lemonade. Perfect place for those cold days or if you fancy a comforting bowl of ramen.
