Great place to come for football nights days etc England 🏴 on fire 🔥 drinks reasonable food also staff helpful and polite
Okay - bear with me. I wouldn't normally find myself in a Whetherspoons (call me a snob) but this came of a fight I had with a friend about how ethical their food could be at the prices they charge. Turns out, very ethical (we consulted the internet); so off we went for breakfast.
They source free range eggs and responsibly sourced fish, and stock both local and international beers... but what I'm here to tell you about is their vegetarian breakfast. The large will cost you £4.40 - and I challenge you to find a breakfast cheaper than that for the kind of size we're talking here - and, surprise surprise, it's pretty good. I like the ratio of hash browns to everything else; hash browns being an under appreciated element of the full fry-up. Add a coffee and an orange juice and you're still not letting go of a full tenner.
And as for the setting: I'm not usually a fan of Whetherspoons' cavernous and silent pubs (they make a point not to play music in their venues) but The Capitol is a disused cinema - so the hushed air feels kind of fitting in such a grand environment. It's a beautiful old building, with many of the original features still intact.
Overall, a pleasant surprise!
Driven past this pub hundreds, if not thousands of times but never been in, found out it was closing so had to make a pilgrimage over.
So glad I did, such a cavernous building, probably one of the biggest spoons I've been in.
Staff were fantastic, beer was good, no complaints from me.
Such a shame its closing today for good
Great history to this building which soon as you walk in there is some info, lovely high ceilings and decor. Food is affordable and decent, female toilets are very spacious and has some seating inside. Can get noisy depending on the time go. Handy ordering from the app if not prefer to que for an order. Has a small outdoor area with tables.
Spectacular 1920s building used previously as a cinema. English breakfast for under a fiver - you cannot complain. There was a shortage of eggs so was offered additional sausage, bacon or beans. Well worth visiting to see the building. @MyBucketListAt60
£2.10 for a glass of rose, what a bargain. It was tasty, sweet and easy to drink.
Enjoyed a couple of games of chess here with a mate.
The prices are absolutely amazing here!
Well, its Wetherspoons, so amazing prices of course, food and drinks are decent. What stands out about this one for me is the place. It used to be a theatre so the inside is massive and very chic. There's outside area to sit with separate smoking area.
I really loved there it such a beautiful pub thatbuse to be a theatre and cinema certainly recommend to go and see it
A converted theatre carefully restored to retain some original features. Conveniently suited near Forest Hill train station and good public transport links. Parking is restricted in front of the building as it on a red line route. However there is ample parking behind Sainsburys Store.
There are 2 seating levels with an outside garden area prefect in the summer. There are large round tables which was great as we were a group of 8 adults.
They served classic pub menus with specific nights like Curry Nights. There is no loud music so its a great spot for peace and quiet. The atmosphere was relaxing with the feeling of space in that you are not sitting on top of each other. The decorations and high ceilings and pictures on the walls add to the ambiance. Free WiFi is also available.
There is a family seating area at the front of the building. The food is good value for money. I certainly will visit again.
Had a birthday lunch with my daughter. I always love the food very filling love the fact that you can refill your hot drinks. service good.
I was so happy I found this place. A former art deco cinema turned into a pub. I was so hooked I didn't even notice how my teriyaki noodles disappeared from my plate :) you have to see this place! I would charge people just for entering that's how amazing it looks. 😍
Staff are great and it's very good food and drink it's just so cheap but the best possible option is the price just great
