Reviews St John Bakery

St. John's was a usual stop whenever I was around the area during the weekend. While the doughnuts are great, I usually go for the Eccles cakes, or, for a bit more sustenance, some of the other options on the breakfast menu, such as the lamb kidneys. On my last visit I confirmed that everything was great, as usual; nice service, cozy feeling, and great aromas from all the cooking and baking.

And so this place is quite famous for their doughnut, I had the vanilla doughnut and it was very fluffy with creamy filling. Legit dough and if I'm there again I don't mind to have another go on doughnuts here

Celebrity chef? Perhaps begrudgingly, but yes, Fergus Henderson is close to being a household name (in foodie households, that is) as the father of nose-to-tail eating. Hip fit out? Well, let’s just say that when we last checked, the minimalist meets welcoming white tile and natural wood aesthetic was the cutting-edge of cool. We are here to eat and drink after all – so we don’t want anything distracting us from the chalkboard menus and baskets of fresh bread (baked in-house, of course).

Delicious. Baked goods and bread are excellent - worth the queue and the trek (if you aren't local).

Beginning first with something of a signature before trending to things more familiar it was the flaky golden shell of an Eccles Cake that first met my tooth and breaking through to a dense pocket of currants and spice I couldn’t

For the past couple of months whenever I’ve poked my nose into the London foodie Twitter-verse, someone has been chatting about St John Bakery doughnuts. They’ve taken on the same mythical status as Hawksmoor steak, Lucky Chip burgers and Lisboa Patisserie custard tarts; they are, according to popular wisdom, ‘the best’. So after reading yet another eulogising review I decided enough was enough, and I was bloody well going to try one. On Saturday morning I took the tube down to Bermondsey and walked along to Druid Street. When I first moved to London I loved wandering around Borough Market on a weekend morning, but the sheer volume of people there now means I get too stressed to enjoy browsing. Over the last year or so (perhaps more) Ropewalk on Maltby Street has emerged as the new destination market for those who love food, but hate crowds. This is due in large part to the the row of warehouses that make up neighbouring Druid Street. Most seem to be owned by food-related companies, ac

You have heard about the original St John, Fergus Henderson’s ground breaking “nose to tail” restaurant that is still going strong after 20 years. Well Henderson has expanded into several areas since then and St John Bakery is one of these ventures.

These were the best doughnuts I’ve ever eaten, by quite some distance. We tried the rhubarb, custard and lemon curd flavours...

St John Bakery opened in November 2010 in order to supply their three locations. Justin Gellatly was the original head baker master of his domain. These days Yohan is running the show and keeping the tradition based on working with hands, focus on sourcing quality, and give the bread all the time it needs to ensure St John’s quality. Good news for all of us is that the place opens for public only on Saturdays as the producers “open door” market in Maltby and Druid streets

I'm not a donut lover but I always have a donut from here every time I come to maltby st market! My favourite is the classic vanilla custard filling. Beware that the filling might explode as you eat!

What a treat! If you are in the area on a Saturday you must come here and fill up for the week. The fresh donuts with custard are out of this world. Nothing compares. The most exciting thing is seeing the masters at work behind the shop in the arch. True masters of the art. There is a reason why these guys are the best in London. Worth buying the Eccles cakes and some Lancashire. An unlikely match but on made in heaven.

Tasty pastries, especially their donuts are impeccable! My favourite was vanilla doughnuts. They could be quite pricy but the vanilla donut won’t deceive you!

Interesting bakery under the arches on the Bermondsey beer mile near Hawkes. Really useful to visit to stock on munchies before you do some serious drinking. We purchased lovely raspberry and chocolate doughnuts plus an Eccles cake. These were excellent. Worth a visit if in the area.

Decent bakery with good, if not slightly overrated, doughnuts. If you do get a doughnut, make sure it's the custard one. Decent tarts too. The real stars are the eccles cakes. Easily the best thing here.

Good, once the best, but now seemingly surpassed by its own apprentices. Still love the doughnut and the breads are still solid.

Take the opportunity to grab a doughnut before/during/after on the beer mile. Other pastries I’ve found can be a bit hit or miss but the team are friendly and you can pick up other St John wine etc whilst you’re there.

Great little bakery under the arches at Druid Street SE1. Always get a sourdough when I visit as they are the best around. They are also well known for their doughnuts and are worth a try too.
