Ultimately one the best things i've ever brought in my life! No regrets!
Fast food but full of flavour. Tortilla is a great little Mexican/Californian burrito chain with five or six outlets dotted about London and I'm very lucky to have one on my route home. This branch is on the ground floor of a modern building in Southwark Street just behind the Tate Modern. It has an additional seating area on the floor above, but this is only opened at lunchtime to cope with the swarms of hungry office types who are queuing out the door.
It's a cafe like space; clean, tidy and efficiently run. You are not likely to want to linger for too long once you have scoffed your Mexican snackage but I guess that's part of the point. You will be as happy here as a solitary diner, a couple or with a larger party - I have visited with B and on also on my own.
Anyway we popped in last Thursday night, I think it is open until 9pm, as we made our way along the Thames after sampling the delights of the Cologne Christmas Market on the Southbank. It always seems to be reasonably quiet if you drop in any time after the lunchtime rush and we received a warm welcome as we mulled over the menu on the wall by the serving area.
Like most of the Mexican grill type places you decide if you are going down the burrito or tacos route, then move onto putting together your dream filling. I'm having a bit of taco love-in at the moment so I went for a couple of the little corn beauties, with the mouth-watering carnitas pork which had been slow cooked to within an inch of its life. I built this up with some hot salsa, Monterey Jack cheese, sour cream and shredded iceberg lettuce. B went down the burrito route and had a bad boy stuffed with pork, rice, pinto beans, cheese and a good hit of the medium salsa. A bowl of the freshly made, very zingy, guacamole with a bag of the excellent tortilla chips on the side and we were good to go.
This is mighty, mighty fine fast food using excellent ingredients and lovingly prepared. There are large bottles of chilli sauce on the table should you need it and there a few foodie bits and pieces you can buy to take home should you fancy making your own Mexican feast.
If you are in the mood for a beer then you are in luck as they have an excellent range of both Mexican and American brews. I had a bottle of the Anchor Steam Beer and B washed the bad boy down with a lovely Mexican bottle whose name has completely slipped my mind (not the usual Corona or Dos Equis so I will have to make a return visit soon to check up on this slight omission!!)
Three quarters of an hour later we left wearing a couple of very big grins with our hunger nicely sated and my wallet less than £20 lighter - result.
Fresh Zingy and Filling!. You really cant go wrong with the Build Your Own Burrito system at Tortilla. Really put's the Burger King motto 'Have it your Way' to shame.
Pork always juicy, Spanish rice delights, and unless you are a complete wimp miss the mild salsa! Super filling lunch for under £7 you have a winner!
Perfect. If you are looking for a quick, cheap, tasty burrito, this is the place! If you are familiar with Chipotle in the USA, it's the closest you'll get in the UK.

Sometimes you just need a burrito and those times Tortilla is a great place to go to. I always recommend the open burritos, here called the naked one, just because I find burritos messy. So go for a naked one and get some guacamole and sour cream on it as well! The pricing is good and it's a great place for lunch. I also tried the frozen margarita in its cute little jar which most certainly did not disappoint. I only wish I could get a bigger jar....
With reasonably priced food that fills you up, going to Tortilla is a no-brainer.
Having never had a burrito before (or any Tex-Mex food for that matter) my time had come. I was pleasantly surprised as not only did the burrito taste delicious, but the staff were all very accommodating. As I didn't eat any of the meat on offer, they allowed me to pick another portion of beans to substitute the meat.
I'm amazed with how much you get for your money, as you can easily get a decent meal for yourself for under £15. A bargain if you're in the middle of London.
Overall, a very nice restaurant that has kick-started my love for Tex-Mex food. Would recommend for a beginner, but it does get busy.
Love the chicken burritos..Always visit once when am in London
Loved the tuna salad and chipotle with Mexican beer. it was late night and found this place open. Good food with nice bottle beer.
Nice place to have burrito, taco or nacho with reasonable prices. We had burrito and nacho with drinks for roughly 20pp. Nice location, friendly staff and good music.
The Bankside branch of Tortilla matches my past experience at Tortilla in another location. The decor is bright and colourful and the restaurant is spacious. Food is fresh and tasty, I think it's reasonably priced for the quality of food. The pulled beef burrito is delicious and the large size is huge! Service was good. I recommend for lunch, a quick bite in the evening or if you fancy some reasonably priced Mexican food.
The food here really is great with great tasting ingredients. I normally go for a naked burrito. The place is quite large and you can even buy hot pepper sauces in bottles. The only drawback is it's so popular that there's almost always queues at lunchtime. Best to order ahead or get there early if you want to avoiding rush hour.
Very good burrito and the staff can be pretty efficient on busy days, which means that I have never had to wait too long on peak hours (between 12:00 and 13:00).
On a side note, the meat portion put on your order isn’t great when compared with other similar restaurants. If you’re a guacamole fan, get ready to fork out £0.80 for a table spoon of some smashed avocado...
A great burrito, a bit of a line when I arrived but it moved quickly.
The burrito was good, I had a large steak burrito, with guacamole which ended up around £7.20. A bit pricey, but I did choose, large, steak and the extra guacamole. The helpings were also all quite generous so I feel I got my moneys worth.
I went at the lunchtime rush (13:00-14:00), the place had a long queue, but it moved quickly and I was served in around 5 minutes. It had plenty of staff to share the work and two tills (genius) so paying on card wasn't a nuisance.
The place was good, but with long glass walls all round and hard surfaces it didn't feel like a cosy restaurant. The staff were nice and efficient, but I quite like a bit of friendly chatter which I didn't get.
The short:
good tasty food, nice size portion and very quick service . Burritos for 2 people + beer and margarita £20/£25.
the long : quick and friendly staff , multiple option to satisfy even that annoying lad/lass from reception , lots of seating space . fills you up nicely and the pork meat I had was nice. I recommend adding the spicy coriander green sauce too as it's super flavorful . will eat there again next time o visit the museum, way better than the Japanese McD' aka Wagamama
Good place, fast and knowledgeable staff. Avoid 12.30 to 13.30 interval is the waiting can be up to 15 mins. My friend Richard says the burritos got smaller over the past year, but I think he was just unlucky at his last visit!
The best place to eat in London. The quality exceeds the price by difference.
You can make the burrito to your liking with a lot of toppings to choose from.
Good location.
Great!!!!! I always repeat 😍
This place has delicious food built to your liking, while you wait. The burritos are satisfying and served by friendly, smiling staff.
Be wary that it gets very busy at lunch, with the queue almost out the door.
Very tasty burrito, not expensive. Sometimes it's too crowded and if you forget to reserve a table you may need to find another place to eat.
The staff is nice too. When I visited for the first time they helped me a lot to choose what to eat.
Great selection of food although only burritos/tubs alongside snacks are available during lunch to keep the queue going. Don't be worried about the queue going to the door when you enter, the staff keep it moving very fast especially now the majority pay using contactless.
Having an American wife, I've tried a lot and we've found Tortilla is probably the best place to get a burrito in London. All the ingredients taste great, the guacamole is always fresh and tangy and the service is always cheerful! The Southwark branch gets more patronage than the others from me as its an easy target on the commute home but I've found standards across the others are always similarly and consistently high.
