Real Mexican food - said by actual Mexicans - so that it can be a bit heavy for dinner time. The environment is nice anyways with Brazilian and Portuguese music playing the whole night since the staff is mostly Portuguese and entirely Spanish speaking. They have also Salsa nights but I have not tried it!
Ay Caramba! There's now a Mexican restaurant in Camden Town!
The atmosphere is one of the best parts of eating here, as the interior is styled to look like a traditional Mexican restaurant. The walls are filled with colourful paintings and sombreros are dotted around the restaurant for you to wear.
The food is delicious and portions are well worth the money. The menu itself is quite broad, where they serve traditional food such as burritos and fajitas, to seafood and salads. I would definitely recommend their starters, particularly the cajun mushrooms and the classic nachos with the chuox bun for dessert.
As the restaurant is located on Camden's main high street, the area is busy and filled with loads of restaurants with food from around the world. I would recommend Ay Caramba to anyone who loves Mexican food that is not too expensive. Also, if you ever watch someone perform at KOKO, Ay Caramba is right outside.
Big Meat!
On my recent visit to Camden, my friend and me wanted a steakhouse. We found this authentic Mexican Restaurant on our way. It was a real deal. When got to the entrance, I checked this place on Zomato and saw that reviews were great. So, we decided to get in. We were not disappointed!
It had that dark, Mexican atmosphere that surprised us and outstanding meat! Oh my! My friend had the Fajitas ribeye steak and he thought it was superb. It was HUGE! And yet it was very tender. I opted for the the gaucho ribeye steak. Again, absolutely mammoth, cooked to a perfect medium rare and so tender and juicy.
We didn't bother with many sides, we did have some starters like fried calamari and some nachos that were excellent.
I found that he drink list was bit weak. It can definitely be improved.
Price is absolutely good!
We will be back surely!

We arrived on the wettest day in October so far...wet though we arrived feeling a bit sorry for ourselves! We ordered a Havana iced tea and a margarita which were lovely and warming! Lots of people arrived after us and it was busy when we left. Ordered steak tacos, chicken enchiladas and popcorn prawns which were lovely and light. BUT the bean dip with chorizo was so good, so warming and comforting I would recommend it to anyone winter especially ;) Lovely staff had a good time, thanks!
Okay - I went in here with zero expectations. A friend suggested it and I just decided to go. I must admit, I like very few Mexican places in London. The ambiance and music really contribute to the feel of the place, as do the sombreros they give you! :)
The two girls who served us were so friendly and helpful. We started with some chorizo nachos which were delicious! I'm not saying this because I have a weakness for chorizo either :P
Cocktails arrived with the nachos. My caipirinha was perfect - one of the best I have had in London for sure. I ordered beef tacos as my main and wow, the beef was tender, juicy and so full of flavour. I highly recommend it!
I was too stuffed to have dessert but my friend certainly enjoyed her two cocktails, enchiladas and dessert! :)
There was a dance class going on - I must look into it at some point. I also think this place would be ideal for a birthday do! All in all, a great place with good value for my money especially given its location!
Went to Ay Caramba for the first time yesterday and i have to say i will be visiting again, food came in big portions and the service was second to none, staff were friendly, and did their job with a smile on their faces. The music really set the tune for the whole vibe they were going for. Will definitely recommend to foodies!
Situated just down the road from Mornington Cresent,
This place is pretty full on but far from unpleasant,
Sombrero's and maracas really drum home the theme,
The music may be loud but it's not too extreme,
Some cocktails are even blue and wonderfully strong,
The staff were eager to please and we all got along,
The steak on my salad was nicely tender and rare,
The bowl was made from a taco, there's an idea to share!
The evening overall; a touch on the cheesy side,
But if you want quality and a laugh, it will provide.
This place has huge portions of great Mexican food :) the atmosphere is extremely cheesy with sombrero hats and waiters singing happy birthday to customers. The music is loud and the cocktails are flowing. If you're looking for a bit of fun while you dine I would recommend this place, if you're looking for somewhere serious and elegant, avoid.
I have to say I absolutely adored this place, visited with friends last night for a semi-impromptu Mexican meal. Really excellent location just across from Mornington Crescent.
Walked in, staff are polite and outgoing which is lovely to see. Decor is crazy, lots of sombreros, Mexican murals on the walls and cute little cactuses.
I had a cosmopolitan and a blue lagoon gin fizz. Both of which were delicious. And I had the BBQ ribs and wings which was a stonker of a meal!
I especially enjoyed the sombreros, which made their way from hanging around the restaurant onto nearly all the diners' heads. Can't say some of my friends were so impressed though. Definitely a restaurant to revisit!!
Went here for dinner with a friend of mine. Heard about this place from a couple of friends in Camden. Although this is more of a drinking place we wanted to try the food.
First things first, the Decor. This place has an amazing Decor, very trendy. At one point one of the servers put up a huge hat on my head!
Started out with Nachos and Jalapeno poppers both of them were great. I almost burnt my tongue on the poppers (we were famished)
For main course my friend ordered Mole de Pollo and I ordered Veg Enchilada, I was happy with my food but my friend was a little disappointed, he didnt really like the "gravy" it came in.
We also had a desert, cant remember the name but it was fried burrito filled with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce, that was brilliant.
We also had a couple of drinks. The food was above average but the service was amazing.
I would definitely come here again, maybe this time more to drink than eat!
Come hungry because these portions are large! My fajitas were far too large to finish (sadly) but it was fantastic, sizzling & spicy and fresh.
Cocktail happy hour started us off on a great note & the staff are possibly some of the nicest I've encountered! They were endlessly happy & friendly & offered plenty of helpful suggestions as to what to order, rushed over when a mojito was too strong & offered to rectify it and best of all, offered us hats to play with!
We stayed for hours lingering over drinks and catching up and not one hint of complaint at all. Fabulous for a relaxed get together with friends
I'd say this is a cheap and cheerful restaurant where people can enjoy dinner if they are prepared to lower their standards a bit. As we went on a Friday night, it was pretty loud there. So, environment may vary other days of the week.
Music was too loud there too. We found it funny that they played salsa style music, which is not Mexican music, and some music styles that are very old-fashioned in Spain.
Food and drink prices were not too high as compared with other places in London and in Camden, where this restaurant is. My beef 'red enchiladas' were not badly cooked and were tasty enough, but I would have had them a couple minutes less in the oven, so that cheese is less solid. The same goes for my friend's veggie red enchiladas. He found it surprising to find broccoli, but he enjoyed them.
Wine was just fine, but I think I'll try one of those colourful big cocktails next time. Service was good, nice waiting staff.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for, say, a date or for when we fancy eating something at a higher standard. However, I enjoyed dining there.
my wife a i are were really impressed by the food and staff they were very good and the drinks flowed as the music played great stuff keep it up yhinking about it might go there today thanks caroline and sean.
Little perplexed at the bad reviews - we had a great night for my birthday a few weeks ago.
My Mum was in town so she joined my sister, my girlfriend and myself.
Food was great and so were the staff.
Certainly more of a fun themed Mexican experience than a lot of the new "upper market" options around these days.
The menu had everything I love from Mexican - Great Quesadillas and Stuffed Jalapeños and very generous Fajitas ( I always struggle to choose between meat or chicken, but they have an option for both!)!
Modello Negro on the ample drinks menu along with a great selection of tequilas taking in everything from Patron to individual Mezcal miniatures (worm included).
My girlfriend and I were a bit late and found my mum and sister being well looked after by the friendly staff when we arrived.
My mum was suspicious having never tried Mexican before but came away a true convert!
Well done Ay Caramba!
we will be back!
:-)
I have a wonderful experience at Ay Caramba
Very good cocktails and the food excellent I definitely came back for more spice ay Caramba !!!
I've been there for friend's birthday, and honestly I loved it. The staff are amazing and caring and the food is SO tasty😍
I had chilli con carne. I definitely recommend it.
A friend and I went in for a quick dinner after a long day. Big tasty portions for a very good price! The different options on sauces are a plus. Not the first time I've been to this place. Staff were very friendly and relaxed. I think they still do several nights of 2-for-1 on cocktails on weekdays. I love their quesadillas and the sombreros on their walls, very Mexican!
If you're looking for an intimate, luxury dining experience - don't bother coming here. If you're up for a brash, colourful, fun night out in Camden - this is definitely the place! The cocktail list and menus are wide-ranging and very good value - the food is good for the price and the staff are friendly. Somberos are available if you feel in a silly mood, and the restaurant is usually busy. A great place to come in a group for an enjoyable, relaxed evening.
5 stars go to having the best happy hour prices in London. Every Monday-Thursday 5-7pm all cocktails are half price and they are sweet and nice!
2 stars go to food there. Last time I ate there nothing tasted good unfortunately. So I go there for happy hour!
I really wasn't expecting much at all. It was late on a Saturday in Camden and every where else was rammed.
On first impressions it seems like a typical cheesy Mexican with sombreros for all.
The food was actually really tasty, reasonably priced, the staff were on point and the Sangria with sugar rim was pretty good. Better than your typical Mexican chain.
Fantastic food!
Relaxed and chilled out atmosphere. No rushing or forcing to eat quickly. It's always busy. Definitely try the Popcorn Prawns they are yummy.
What gave me give the 5* review.
Well I was visiting with the wife my mum and my nan and of course her being at the age she is is not into alcohol or cocktails. She wanted a cup of tea, unfortunately their machine had broken but the server with the blue/teal hair colour her name was CIARA she said she would ask the kitchen staff if they would boil some water for her. They did and the lady rushed to the shop to buy some milk for her. This to me is fantastic customer service. She was extremely pleasant and helpful (Ay Caramba management make sure you keep this member of staff she is a credit to your business)
So again onto the food. It's tasty hot and definitely freshly cooked. It's definitely worth a visit if your hungry as you won't be disappointed with the portions. Oh yeah be aware if you want starters, main and desert you probably won't be able to eat all 3 of them lol lol
Overall a fantastic experience made much better by CIARA. Thank You.
Good prices but huge sizes: starter+main were impossible for me to finish! £10 for both :) went with a friend and no one is rushing you to leave, the place is big and atmospheare is nice as well, music is nasty language but bet no one notices because it is in spanish (lots of south american slangs). The taste was not the best ever (compared to Mestizo, which is authentic mexican food), but tacos are served with a variety of toppings that you can use however you desire! Every mexican wishes to decide the amount of onion and salsa in their taco, (unlike Tortilla, Wahaca or DF Mexico where everyone thinks they know better and rape your taco/burrito with sour-cream/rice/lettuce) plus: toppings are the toppings of a real taco stand and not lettuce and cheddar (shameful!). Might heat tortillas a little more but as a mexican in London; I loved finding this place which is half the price of Mestizo 😁
Great food and service. Went for a friends 23rd birthday midweek and we thoroughly enjoyed it, location is great. Not cheap but great value for your money
Excellent customer service! They proper look after you. We went early evening was very relaxing, portion sizes are decent you get what you pay for.
Brilliant food.. amazing margaritas.. I love the place.. plus great prices!! You can't go wrong!

Little Pricey but a very authentic mexican flavour. Excellent starters as well but drinks are a bit too sugary for me.
Ok food, decent prices. It's a pretty good place to go with a friend for a texmex meal. Service was very good.
Food was good staff are friendly there was a misprint on the menu regarding a drink only reason for 4 stars
Friendly and efficient service . Good food. Excellent cocktails . Wi-Fi available.
Delicious and incredibly filling food. Good prices. Fine staff and atmosphere.
