Fantastic food, great atmosphere, friendly staff... a great night out!
What a great little find. Went for a coffee and ended up having perfect poached eggs on toast with avocado.
Highbury is maybe not the trendiest neighborhood, with its busy load roads and crowded dirty sidewalks. However, recently a great variety of unique restaurants and coffee shops have been opening in the area, giving it a cute neighborhood feel. Sawyer and Gray is an adorable little spot, with faded wooden walls, furnished with wooden tables and mix-matched chairs, and decorated with random little items like an old typewriter, faded boxes and an antique bicycle hanging off the ceiling. The Mumford and Sons music in the background perfectly complements the decor and makes you feel like you're in a hipster's country home, which is a wonderful way to escape the city for a few hours.
I tried their flat white which was pretty nice, but mostly I think their menu is great. The Brie, cranberry and bacon sandwich is really tasty and they have healthy delicious breakfast options. The prices are really reasonable and you can comfortably sit here for hours, reading or just chatting with a friend. The baristas a really friendly and they pay great attention to the customers. It's never too crowded, there's always enough tables and you'll mostly see the same people. It really feels like a neighborhood coffee shop and it's really lovely to spend time here.
I don't often take the underground in London - I venture on foot or, if it's a touch too far, on the bus. In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (great book), the author makes an excellent insight into the idea that if you're travelling by car, you're a passive observer; the window framing the world as if it were a show.
The beauty of journeying by foot (or in the instance of the book, by motorcycle) is that everything is tangible and, for me, I wouldn't come across half of the things I do if I were boxed in on the underground, watching a black wall and whizzing underneath such an amazing city.
I've been keeping an eye on Sawyer & Gray on St. Paul's road for what seems like a year now, trying to see behind the washed out windows and, with a stroke of luck on my day off, it opened tentatively to the public today with intentions to bring more food and treats to the table in the coming weeks.
Pushing open the door, chirping hello and elatedly ordering myself a flat white, I pulled up a stool in the window that looks out onto the street and set to chatting with the wonderfully friendly staff who eagerly told me that, in time, the cafe might open late into the evening with food and wine. This was music to my ears in a city where I struggle to find the relaxed cafe culture I so loved in Barcelona close enough to my house and office.
Looking around the premises, it's clear to see this cafe making a success of itself - being at once as spacious as it is cosy, with stairs that wind down to the open kitchen with inviting nooks if you care to be clandestine while eating your eggs on a hazy Sunday morning.
Brunch promises to be modern with all the popular choices and, of course, there will be cake. I nibbled a piece of brownie that was possibly the best I've had in a long while - crispy on the outside but soft on the inside with the occasional nutty crunch.
Ideally situated close to Highbury and Islington station, this corner of where Upper Street meets St. Paul's road seems set to become a destination of sorts for cafe lovers - with Maison D'etre, Sawyer and Gray and a Turkish Tea House reputed to be on the way.
This ought to keep footfall satiated and entice others to the area, establishing a pocket of that so sought cafe culture I've been dreaming of - if only the road weren't so busy, I'd like to see these places spilling out on the pavement.
For me and for now, it's the perfect spot to pick up coffee before heading to Daylight Music at the Union Chapel on Saturdays.
If the food is as good as the service and the coffee, it's another win as a top recommendation on my Islington list, along with Ez & Moss.
You can find Sawyer and Gray at 290 St. Paul's Road, Islington, N12LH
Delicious food and really friendly staff. They have lots of different options for brunch, including for people who are vegetarian/DF/GF. Coffee is good too and the decoration is lovely. The only thing I did not like about this place was the strong smell of mould in the toilet, it's hard to breath and the landlord should definitely get this problem sorted out, since is bad for everyone's health.
Delightful spot for coffee and brunch. Perfect coffee in artfully designed cups, delicious breakfast options, warm rustic interiors, and friendly and welcoming staff.
Had a flat white and the avocado and feta on toast and it was a delight. The owner was incredibly welcoming and treated us first timers just as well as the regulars next to us.
A wonderful spot to discover!
Absolutely fantastic food. Fresh and tasty very nice decor amazing hospitality. This is a nice spot for a brunch when you in the area
Cute little place to have a proper brunch.
Dishes was a bit simple but it gets the jobs done!
I should come back during winter, I spotted a little fire place in the basement.
Honestly, the best breakfast I’ve ever had. I can’t stop thinking about it! It was so fresh. (Shakshuka & quesadillas) Coffee is incredible as well — the best cappuccino ever. Loved the beans they used and milk was perfectly frothed. Their pastries are outstanding too😍!!!
Really nice cosy cafe with friendly owner and staff. The food was delicious although vegans will have to have to order a veggie option and omit the halloumi and egg etc. But the seasoning and sauces were nice. A shame there were no vegan cakes. Great coffee and juices.
Small and cozy is the description I would give this brunch spot. There are 2 levels (street level and basement) and both are pretty tight, but not that you feel crampe in it. Decoration is rustic, with visible brick and fireplace at the basement. The food was really good, a decent portion, and a price is on par with other spots... 10 quid average per brunch plate.
Lovely place with a very friendly team. Great homemade cakes and the french toast breakfast is my favourite.
Cheerful service, nice rustic interior and very accessible venue, just by a bus stop.
Very good coffee served on a very nice cup and saucer. Ricotta cheesecake is highly recommended to accompany your cup of joe!
Best brunch in Highbury. I highly recommend
One of my favourite brunch spots in London. Cozy, high quality ingredients, and the best cappuccino. Can’t ask for more.
Came here for Saturday breakfast. Everything was delicious. Would highly recommend. Place is very cute, staff very friendly and the menu is amazing.
Great brunch spot with good service and more seating downstairs.
Priced moderately. With excellent service.
Would recommend!
One of my absolute faves. Marco and the rest of the gang are so friendly and welcoming. And the food is great too - I'm a big fan of the French toast, breakfast sandwich and the Sawyer's brunch. It's usually packed at the weekend but opens early so a top tip is to go for breakfast before work on a weekday.
Love coming here for brunch. Located in few minutes walk from the station. Nice atmosphere and interior, tasty french toast.
Amazing cake, incredible coffee and super friendly staff! Loved coming in today and will definitely come back
Great cute little place for brunch. The place is cosy and the service is excellent . There are good options on the brunch menu, and the homemade scones were probably the best i had ever tried!
One of the best places in north London to go for brunch… I am very picky with my eggs and their Eggs Florentine never disappoints… I order the same every week :)
Love their capuccino too, very nice coffees.
The place is very chilled, privately owned and run and the owner, Marco, always goes the extra mile to make you feel welcomed.
It has definitely become a regular spot for me and my friends, highly recommend!
Giovanni our waiter brought out the best experience. Utterly honest in what we should get, and he was NOT wrong, cannot to come back again for brunch
