I used to work right by Charlotte Street, and that made lunchtimes incredibly dangerous for my bank balance. It’s gotten even better since I stopped working around there – I love The Ninth, and you are spoilt for choice in that neighbourhood (Pied a Terre is another fantastic restaurant).

Extremely good food.

A 4 hour American pop-up in London had me craving burgers, but not enough to stand in line for them. So I headed to the new branch of a local burger & chicken chain, which had a 50% off on food and hence also had a queue of about 40 waiting to be seated.

This was when I realised, Fitzrovia is not a great place to be hunting for a quick sit down lunch on a weekday afternoon. There are plenty of options, but they are all overflowing.

I quickly scrolled through my bookmarks & saw that Herman Ze German was around the corner and had larger seating space (2 floors) This was a great call as a lot of people also were taking their hot dogs away. So there was a queue, but it was moving very quickly and there was seating space.

When I saw the burger schnitzel on the menu, I knew I had to have it, but I also wanted to try their famed wurst.

The menu has changed a bit from some of the pictures here on yelp. You don't get a form to fill up. You order and pay at the counter from an overhead menu and if you want to eat in, they give you a number and deliver the food to your table. Food combinations have also changed.

The pork / chicken schnitzel burger came with fries or salad, so fries it was. (If indulging in carbs, go the whole hog). I chose the pork and bacon option and it was absolutely amazing.

I also chose the chilli wurst with the hottest curry sauce on the side and that was so good, I can go back just for that curry sauce. It's good and spicy, not one of those cop-out spicy.

Staff are constantly checking on you and have a natural smile on their faces. So even if you have a bit of a wait (10-15 minutes since I ordered schnitzel, hot dog orders were coming out much faster), it isn't a frustrating one (as I was seated at a proper table, within 5 minutes of entering, having ordered and paid) I'd rather be seated at a table waiting for my food, than standing in line outside a   Food joint.

They have a range of drinks in unusual combinations, the cola orange lemonade was quite refreshing. And they also have beer.

Would be happy to go back any time I feel a craving for burgers/schnitzel or hot dogs.

To celebrate National Hotdog day, we purchased the deal from Timeout for £7 and get the hotdog in Chilli Wurst, chips and a fizzy drink.

The hotdog comes with complimentary crispy onions and we quite like our chilli wurst with little hint of heat instead of hot chilli spicy. The double fried chips were crispy but slightly over seasoned. It's overall decent meal for lunch but definitely need a coffee to keep up the rest of day.

“Our wurst is ze best” the Herman Ze German website says. My fond memories of German sausages are, me trying to devour them carefully with my head tilt to the side at fair grounds like Winter Wonderland. I visited 2 of the shops already but the Fritzrovia one. The shop exterior is a lot classier than the other two with actual spaces to sit down and eat instead of the hole in the wall truck shop. Usually, at the other spots, I have to fight for a spot by the window.

All the goodness only less crowded and noisy, it's pure bliss. I decided to complete my "pilgrimage" to Herman's sites on a saturday evening and I've been pleasantly surprised by finding the place busy but not crammed giving the chance to me and my friend to enjoy our wurst and schnitzel with plenty of calm and indulging on the beer. I already am a fan, but this spot has become my favourite now. The staff is super friendly, as with all the guys and girls working for them, and if there are problems, they are great at solving everything efficiently.

I don’t think I’ve ever visited Herman ze German sober. The Villiers Street branch is in staggering distance of Charing Cross station and certainly beats a McDonald’s on the way home. Now they have a new and much more grown up home on Charlotte Street, plus one on Old Compton Street. What I’d only known as a pit-stop place is actually nice to hang around in, especially the basement bar where some pretty decent music was playing. There were no drunks in sight (not even my friend Keith by the time he’d finished his maß of Paulaner Oktoberfest beer £10).

Herman have a good array of German beer stocked – draft and bottled plus a good variety of soft drinks. I opted for a Fritz-limo lemonade £2.25 before I moved onto the Paulaner Weissbier wheat beer £2.95 for half a pint. I do love a surprise toilet. I expected the loos here to just be regular toilets but instead I felt like I’d just stepped back into my secondary school, apart from the toilets back then certainly weren’t unisex, imagine the trouble that would have caused.

Visually the menu’s a little scraggy and studenty (although I do always appreciate a menu with photos) but don’t let that put you off, the wurst here is actually very good, we tried them all just to be sure. From the traditional – a juicy veal and pork, to the ‘special sausage’ – a firm pork and beef with cumin, who doesn’t love a special sausage? Herman import their wurst from a butcher called Fritz in the Black Forest, Germany, they’re gluten-free and they even do a veggie one, not that you’d know it as it’s invisible on the menu.

Ze Wilde Bock £5.75 – was a firm and juicy bockwurst drizzled in curry sauce with a scattering of crispy onions and mayo, all wrapped up in a warm toasted roll alongside a handful of fries. Really very good and great value for money, however the chips aren’t the greatest on earth, dry with just a thin strand of fluffy potato in the centre.

The Currywurst £5.95 came chopped with several options of sausage – brat (pork and veal), bock (smoked pork) or chilli (pork, beef and chilli), drenched in a tomatoey curry sauce with chips. The sauce varies in heat (just like Nando’s) from ‘mild’ for wimps to ‘ringer’ for hardcore chilli fans. Be warned though, we attempted the tiniest dab of this hot sauce and it blew our heads off. Anyone who enjoys this level of heat is a lunatic.

There’s schnitzel and salad on the menu too, personally I find schnitzel a pretty dull thing to eat, but the punters must love it as HZG sell tonnes of the stuff, I’ll stick with a hot weiner in a bun thanks. There’s no desserts, not that we could have managed them, however we did spot a Yog frozen yoghurt shop next door on the way back to Goodge Street. Herman ze German really is great value and fun with friendly service. They made the sausage in their logo resemble a p***s, so they get top marks from me.

Herman ze German has the best sausages in London. And if that isn't an advertising tagline, I don't know what is.

Order your gluten- free sausage at the bar and enjoy with yummy, yummy chips. For the more health conscious, there's a bun-free option, but WHERE'S THE FUN IN THAT?!

They do great lunchtime deals making it the perfect place to break away from the office. Good job, Herman!!

First time to this place and will be coming back. Very cosy surroundings and quiet romantic. The walls are decorated with pictures, I think famous Germans over the years. Service very friendly and very bubbly. Was explained everything on the menu and the beers where very nice.

Delicious lunch food. Great with beer. Space a little on the limited side. Chains in Soho and Charing Cross. Currywurst is always a good idea.

Food is great, though both occasions I've been the guy serving on the counter seemed a little disinterested and struggled to take the order, but that aside, really nice restaurant and the fritz kola is banging!! Didn't realise they had a bar downstairs and the unisex toilets are a really nice touch!!

Great spot for a decent meal at reasonable cost. Excellent service. A group of us came here just before the closing time on a Friday & they still happily served us and waited until we finished our meal. Generous portions & no fuss if you want to share a meal with a friend. Good beers. Great wurst (including vegan options)! Toilets were downstairs, so won’t be suitable for those with accessibility needs. Take-away option is also available.
