Cool bar, nice cocktails. I like their gin tonics!

Good for a drink out on Saturday and closes quite late in comparison with other places.

To try!

Imagine a cozy romantic date over desserts and cocktails, seems like a fairy tail😍 to me. But at Soho it's a reality at "Basement Sate", which is a "dessert cocktail bar"-an interesting delicious concept❤️.
The concept is cute and the venue is cozy for a date 😍.
This place is kind of dark with dim lighting, loud music which is cool and tapping.
Words can't explain, guys you gotta go there to get the feel.
Must try place for late nite romantic desserts n cocktails ❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️

Cozy spot for a nightcap. Dim lighting, moderately loud music, and mahogany surroundings. Surprisingly good desserts served until late as well.

Hidden gem in Soho! very easy to walk past but if you find it you will really enjoy your time there. The staff is friendly and create a low key atmosphere. Cocktails and desserts were amazing. What I love the most about this place is the music... Incredible! For true music lovers. I highly recommend this place

Dessert with cocktails at late night? The concept is cute and the venue is cozy for dating. But the cocktails really need some improvements.

I would class myself as a bit of a slap-dash, taste and tweak as you go kind of cook. My parents are exceptionally good cooks so I guess I picked up basic skills by diffusion as I never made a meal until I moved out of home at the start of university. Our family home has shelves of cookbooks but I doubt my parents meticulously follow the recipes, only really using them to get ideas for dishes and flavour combinations. In most cases when I ask my mother how much of this or that she puts into a certain dish of hers I’m trying to recreate, she unhelpfully tells me it’s ‘angga-angga’, which is her Malay version of saying ‘approximately’. Like I said, unhelpful!

When someone said dessert and cocktail bar my first though was girls' night! Some people would have plucked straight for a romantic night but cocktails and chocolate screams date night with Kirsty for me!. On the hottest day of the  year we headed down to Basement Sate, a cool safe haven in Soho, to escape from the blistering heat and treat ourselves.

Basement Sate is an underground dessert and cocktail bar in Soho, and it's so hidden that you've got to be looking for it to find it. You can only find it by a very simple, understated sign on the wall beside the stairs leading down to the basement.

I must have gone on one of the hottest evenings of the year, so unfortunately, it was lacking any atmosphere and meant that even though we were having the cocktail and dessert pairing, we were in and out within 40 minutes. It was however a nice place to escape the heat.

Obviously, it's a rather romantic idea - but I'd taken one of my best friends with me - so we had to ask for the cocktails in separate glasses and two spoons instead of one (though even if I had been with my boyfriend I think I would still have wanted two glasses and two spoons).

The desserts themselves were gorgeous - really, really wonderful. We had a pistachio based cake, a blackberry macaron and a chocolate fondant - all of which were excellent.

The accompanying cocktails were a little mixed for our tastes, with one in particular (made with American whiskey) being far too strong.

I'm sure it would be a great venue for a date - in the winter - but perhaps not on such a hot night!

It's worth noting that we were told that the menu would be changing for the dessert pairing within the next month.

“I DON’T LIKE DESSERTS”…SAID NO ONE EVER!

WALKING THROUGH SOHO YOU’RE BOMBARDED WITH PLACES TO EAT, DRINK, CHILL OR DO ALL OF IT. BUT THERE’S ALWAYS ROOM FOR SOMETHING NEW AND THAT’S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT LONDON!

Lo and behold- Basement Sate. A cocktails and desserts bar! They opened last year in September and since then have garnered a quiet following of people with an insatiable sweet tooth. For once desserts have taken the centre stage in the menu and I LOVE IT! Leave your guilt at the door and step right in. The cozy sofas are inviting and you could lounge here for a few hours quite easily. A lazy evening spent eating and giggling away with your friends. They also have DJs who get you lightly tapping your feet to the beats while you eat and drink. A perfect “chill out” zone.

They don’t have a sign at the door so like us you may find yourself approaching a lone man standing at the door looking at you. And you wonder to yourself- am I going to get in some kind of trouble? But then you find out this is the entrance to Basement Sate and you joke about it pretending you knew exactly what it was the whole time! Ha…nope, didn’t happen to me… Anyway! I sent in our specialist drinks guy, J, to check the place out and try out their new menu they launched in March 2015 which features some innovative mix of cocktails. They have added in some nibbles for people who prefer a little savoury something with their drinks.

Quite a cool atmosphere, helped by the dark décor, minimal lighting and underground location. They’ve chosen a theme and stuck to it well. On to the new menu!

Kinder surprise: Brownie, milk chocolate and tonka whipper cream, caramelised hazelnuts, praline foam, caramelia pearls. Served kinder egg, although a lot harder to break into than the classic childrens treat (and unfortunately no toy in the middle). Each part of this desert was delicious, I just wish there was more of it! Only two small pieces of brownie and a couple of hazelnuts.

Green Forest: pistachio jaconde, black cherry amarena cremeux, pistachio whipped cream and strawberries.

Don’t expect massive portions of desserts- this isn’t an American diner ;) petite desserts, great flavours and just one dessert won’t be enough!

Ordered a Mai Scotch: Scotch, Almond syrup, triple sec, peat. The drink was fruitier than expected, but had a strong smoky aftertaste courtesy of the peat.

And a Her cocktail: Irish whiskey, dry vermouth, amontillado sherry, luxardo maraschino. Strong, dry, and hard hitting.

The single waiter seemed a bit rushed off his feet, so it would have been nice to get a more detailed explanation of the different deserts and cocktails on offer (important for a place that is really trying to pride itself on cool cocktails and deserts). However, understandably it can get quite challenging when serving a busy bar!

Another selling point of Basement Sate is they like to share the love of cocktails and desserts too! What does that mean? They offer pastry and cocktail making classes! So if you’re looking for something fun to do one afternoon or evening, then this is the place to be. Their head chef Kelly Nadjarian heads up the pastry making class. She is very passionate about desserts and loves talking about them! A bit of background about Kelly. “Hailing from Paris, Kelly’s career was kick started by working in numerous prestigious establishments including luxurious Parisian hotels, such as Le Majestic and Le Royal Monceau.

Whilst Kelly was honing her skills working with Pierre Herme at Le Royal Monceau, a five star hotel situated near the Champs Elysées, she was head-hunted by the Mandarin Oriental in London, and went on to work underneath patisserie expert Rudolphe Tronc. From there Kelly then went on to work at exclusive private members club Morton’s before perfecting her patisserie skills at the renowned French pastry shop, Belle Epoque. Kelly is now bringing her passion of pastry and impressive culinary skills to Basement Sate.” SO! A group of bloggers descended upon their kitchen (luckily fits 6 people!) and we went on making our lemon meringue pie- a first for me! I don’t make desserts at home- I prefer my savoury meals and leave the dessert making to the experts. Therefore, this afternoon was a fun way to pair up and try to attempt something I didn’t think I could accomplish.

We got our stations ready and started working on the step by step process of making a lemon meringue pie. If you’re good at measuring, organising and following instructions then you can make a fine dessert. I, however, follow my instinct while cooking and like a true Asian never use a measuring utensil! This was quite challenging but luckily my partner was doing the main work..ha ha

Kelly showing us some tricks of the trade!

We decided to grate in some lemon zest for an extra zingy flavour- yum!! A perfect summer dessert.

I had a fantastic evening learning something new. Kelly makes the whole experience fun and always on-hand to help. This is a great way to try something different with your friends, partner or even a team day away from the office! These classes are only available on Wednesday from 1-4PM.

Basement Sate is the brainchild of Cathleen McGarry, the co-owner of the world-renowned Sherry Butt cocktail bar in Paris. Cocktails (prices range from £7-12) include Thunder Cloud – tequila, aperol, blueberry vinegar, lemonade. Desserts (prices range from £6-8) like Purple Rain – blackcurrant & yoghurt mousse macaroon, meringue, yoghurt mousse

A brand new bar has landed in Soho. Instead of savoury snacks from the bar it’s swapped with beautifully made desserts. Cocktails and desserts! Yes please! Basement Sate is one of a kind in London. Brought to you by co-owner Cathleen McGarry of Sherry Butt Paris. The selection of desserts is priced from £8-£13 opening until the hours of 1am. Walking downstairs towards the basement bar, it’s dimly lit with dark oak colours and furnishings.

As the name would imply, this nightspot is located in a warm and stylish basement room in Soho.
Brought to London by the same young entrpreneur that launched the Sherry Butt in Paris, Basement Sate serves up the very best of cocktails and dessert. The menus boast unique and ecclectic mixes that must be sipped from one of the rich leather chairs. If, like me, your idea of a great night out includes sugary desserts and tasty beverages then this is the place!

Walking downstairs towards the basement bar, it’s dimly lit with dark oak colours and furnishings. Once the music drops a beat you want to start dancing, blasting dance/trip hop, nu jazz/deep house from the speakers. I didn’t quite get the secluded area at the back but if you need the privacy it’s there.

Attending the opening night I was treated to confectionary bite size masterpieces. Superbly done, the mini mille-feuille chocolat was velvety smooth chocolate, with a mouse texture, with plenty of the cocoa concentration. The desserts are designed to compliment the house cocktail creations.

The cocktails conjured by the masters suited the desserts very well, arboricultursit is my match made in heaven. I found myself chewing on the sweet cinnamon barks, floating on top of my drink.

We made our way over to Broadwick Street for the launch of Basement Sate, a cocktail and dessert bar (that's a thing now) in the space that Soho institution The Player used to inhabit.

It's a good-looking bar - all dark wood, red brick and low lighting (to the extreme), plus a very funky back bar arrangement with spirits on small stepladders.

The booze and pudding idea is down to Dublin born Cathleen McGarry, co-owner of the excellent Sherry Butt in Paris. The 12 strong cocktail list has been devised by Byly Tran (Prescription Club), and Dorian Picard (Club Gascon) is the pastry chef behind the puddings. Enough name dropping for you? Expectations were understandably high.

After a bit of a scrum at the busy bar, I started with a moreish Arboriculturist (Calvados, Cinnamon & Pear Syrup, Sherry - £10) - boozy fruit with more than a hint of Christmas. My bottle of Calvados is normally reserved solely for making many a Sidecarriage, but I might just have to branch out if someone divulges the specifics.

Next up was Eagle in the Tub (Gin, White Port, Fernet Branca, Ginger Ale - £11) which didn't stick in the memory, but long drinks aren't really my thing.

The unlikely winner for me was Beet Me Up (£11), a fiery mix of vodka, beetroot, ginger and Moscato d'Asti. My vodka bottles rarely get an outing from the drinks cabinet (mostly when Big Lebowski is on) but now I have a new excuse. Another recipe needed please.

There's plenty more fun to be had on the short menu including Patrick the Wombat (Rosemary-infused Tequila, Aperol, Umeshu, Grapefruit - £10), Prairie Meuh Meuh (Cognac, Suze, Punt e Mes - £11) and Salty Granny (Japanese Whisky, Wakame-infused Vermouth, Granny Smith syrup - £13).

On the dessert front, we tasted three miniature versions, but below are some photos of the real deal for you to gawp at. London - Brest (black sesame choux, praline cream, "hidden" hazelnut, tonka creme anglaise) was the mini winner on the night, but I'd have to have the £10 full version before I could really pass judgement. It will be interesting to see whether the desserts get as much attention as the cocktails over the next few weeks.

Others of particular interest on the menu:

Bulle - spiced blood orange sphere, Visitandine biscuit, passion fruit gel, Granny Smith foam £9

Mille Feuille Fromage & Truffle - filo pastry, truffled cream cheese, honey&rosemary, pine nut pesto £11

Raviole - cocoa ravioli, raspberry ginger cream, cassis chocolate truffle, gin & citrus gel £12

It's a bizarre concept, though similar projects such as After Hours Dessert and The Pudding Bar have proved to be very popular, and the bartending is strong enough without the additional sweet course, so I'm sure Basement Sate will do well. I will probably avoid returning on the weekend when a "high-octane party atmosphere" is promised - a chilled out jazz vibe midweek sounds more up my street. Take your pick.

Underground bar that you'd probably miss since there's not a huge sign. There's a tiny gold plaque outside a door that leads to a stairway downwards. It feels like you're going into someone else's home, but you're just heading to the bar. We discovered this after dinner. We were looking for a drink and a dessert - and we got exactly that! It was really quiet on a Sunday night, so service was quick and they were friendly! I loved the Fluff. We also got a small chocolate dessert, which was a good size if you only want a nibble.

Lovely atmosphere, cozy seatings, and very friendly staffs. Easy to talk on most nights, great for a date, besties catch-up or even group parties. Cocktails from classics to their specialty, all pretty much up to standards! Been going to this place for quite some time/years and always loved their beautifully presented desserts. Just hoping the dessert chefs 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳 will be back soon!

Great place to have drinks! We had not booked, but it is better to. The vibe is really relaxed, and the staff was cordial and quick to respond. The drink itself was amazing, incredible taste, but too much ice maybe. Not easy to spot but worth a visit, super central.

I had had my eye on this place for about two years but there had been some issues with dessert availability so I only got around to visiting last night. I must say that it was worth the wait, it’s a great establishment. The ambience is calm and intimate and the concept of a cocktail and dessert bar is just brilliant. I found the waiter very warm and friendly, and the drinks and desserts were very creative. Great experience and I will definitely be back. Great date night spot.

The staff are really nice. The vibes are amazing. It’s like a basement, dark and little lighting. Candles. Gives me a proper James Bonds vibe haha. Drinks and cocktails are really good. Quite expensive but it’s London. Would recommend for a cheeky cocktail night out with the partner. May have to book as we just walked in and there were no seats. Overall, good experience, the staff are all nice and the drinks are 10/10.

Cool spot. I (at 41 years of age) felt like I was not their target demo, which is totally fine. I joked to my wife that if your eyes aren’t good enough to read the menu in the dim lighting there, you’re probably too old to be in the place. It was a cool/hip vibe. Different interesting seating options, staff was run off their feet and still very attentive, helpful and competent. My only gripes are ‘old man’ things like 1: it was very loud and 2: dimly lit. Again, these were choices clearly made to appeal to their target demo, but sometimes helpful to know when picking a spot!

Amazing cocktails! I have been a regular customer for years now and I always recommend the place to my friends. The vibe? Think grown and sexy. Dimmed lights, leather sofas, and the hospitality by Steven especially was the star of the night. He recommended cocktails based on my taste and he got it right every time. I love coming here and you will too.

Drinks are amazing and of great value. Service is top notch, our waitress entertained all four of our requests for cocktail recommendations and every single one of them exceeded expectations. Even coming from New York, I have never been to a cocktail bar where every single drink impressed me. The only slight letdown was the decor of the place, which was slightly simple. All that said, if you are looking for a venue with excellent drinks, you cannot give this a pass. P.S. The Young Cuban is a must-have but honestly any drink on the menu would be good.

An absolute gem of a cocktail bar in Soho. Think Speak Easy vibes and gorgeous cocktails in a basement with low-lit settings. Comfy looking leather sofas are dotted around the bar. There are intimate boots to fit a private group and bartenders are pleasantly chatty. Highly recommended for a team night out or just with friends... or even with a date!

Basement Sate desserts are back!!! We were lucky enough to be Basement Sate’s first customers to order desserts last week since their new chef joined them and they didn’t disappoint! Very imaginative creations, each delicious, and paired with one of their signature cocktails (which are obviously also incredible!) The whole environment is very classy and the staff super friendly. I can’t wait to go back and try some more!!!
