The Garden Gate is a 19th-century gastropub with a beautiful beer garden and a quaint wood-panelled period interior in the heart of Hampstead. It’s no more than a minute’s walk from the Hampstead Heath Rail Station, and the same to (or from) the Royal Free. My family and I love this rustic looking pub and have at least one extended family gathering here every year (this year included). The garden is heavenly when the weather permits, and the whole establishment is dog-friendly.
I wanted to go to the Garden Gate for ages - I've walked past several times, seen the beautiful looking beer garden, smelled the delicious BBQ and told myself I'll be back. A much needed catchup with James gave us the perfect excuse to get a Sunday Roast, and his suggestion of meeting at the Garden Gate was much appreciated.
A tomato juice (no bloody mary for this hungover little zoman) preceded an epic looking beef roast while we enjoyed the surroundings and the sunshine. The roast was a really decent size with all that you'd want from a Sunday lunch, but it's not the best I've ever had. The yorkshire pudding was a little on the oily side and beef on the dry side, but I still finished my plate off and ordered a cheesecake to finish me off. Hangover be gone!
Fabulous ambience - warm and friendly staff. Didn't care too much for the wild salmon fish cakes - more potato than fish. However, the chicken and ham hock pie is homely and hearty. And the sticky toffee pudding is to die for!
Best atmosphere you could ever ask for. Super cozy and beautifully decorated outside area with heaters. Go here for casual hang-outs with your friends. Price is reasonable
The highlight: This pub has beautiful and spacious outdoor seating, which is usually very busy on a nice day!
I recommend booking a table in advance via their website.
The food needs to be ordered and paid via a QR code and gets served to the table. The drinks need to be ordered at the bar.
We visited for Sunday roast - the roast to share had loads of meat. ⛰️
The vegan roast was nice to try, but lacked some flavour and was quite dry even though we used all of the provided gravy. I wouldn't necessarily have it again.
I recommend the spiced chickpea salad 👍

We had some fish and chips and halloumi fries for dinner and the food was great! Good portions for the price paid. Service was fine and we found a table outside but not completely outdoors, which was good because it rained shortly after! The place was full of people and they all seemed to be having a great time.
Bought Grilled goats cheese 🧀 £7.50, shredded duck salad 🥗 £15.50, plant based burger 🍔 £15.00. Drinks were pricey Aspall cyder £6.15, and £6.10 for a Guinness.
The garden has a great atmosphere, but unfortunately the garden shuts at 22:30 due to complaining neighbours that has forced this pub to shut early. Great shame that you can not enjoy the lovely evenings. I think people who purchase a house near a pub, should expect noise, especially that has a beer garden, like the one I live near. It’s a place where people come to enjoy a evening after a hard days work.
The place was super vibrant, with loads of young people. The whole place and garden was busy and there was a lot going on. A great vibe for a Sunday afternoon!
I stayed for one drink while I did some work editing on my laptop. Would come back again for a more social vibe with some friends!
The food options looked great but I had just eaten!
Very nice Sunday Roast and fish and chips. Lovely atmosphere. A bit of a hit and miss in terms of service - we initially got given a table next to a door that kept getting opened / closed and asked to be moved, but one of the waitresses refused, despite other tables being available. We then spoke with a different waiter and he was really kind and accomodating and moved us to a much better table.

Popped to the pub for a meal and a cheeky pint after spending the afternoon at the park. Great environment, gorgeous garden, efficient and friendly staff and the food was delicious. I had the sausages and mash and was so very pleased with my choice, it was cooked beautifully. Definitely recommend and will be back.
The food is superb, and it came out of the kitchen very quickly. I loved every bite of it - well done to kitchen staff. The atmosphere was busy and very enjoyable. Our floor waitress was very friendly, but seemed very busy, which slowed our order being taken. But no fault of theirs, it was a busy night. Will come back again. Recommend 👌🏻
Best pub in London. We hosted our wedding reception at the Garden Gate Hampstead and would recommend it to anyone and everyone - whether you're looking for private hire or just popping in for a drink. The ambiance is stunning with a beautiful wall of lush greenery and pub lights strung through the garden, tons of comfortable seating, and lots of fantastic food and drink on the menu. They also have a new outdoor BBQ that we used for late night burgers during our wedding, but would serve as a perfect spot for lunch any day of the week. All of this is made possible by an absolutely stellar team, led by Lucy, who have equal measures of heart and skill for creating memorable hospitality. Will always have love for this place thanks to this team.
Friendly service, cozy and warm outdoor area that isn’t too loud, and the seafood linguine was straight up one of the best pastas I’ve had in my life — great value for money too. Will return for sure
Had to wait for starters for way too long but it was a quiz night so kinda understandable. Otherwise lovely staff, super dog friendly and amazing atmosphere.
Lovely pub with a beautiful beer garden. The fish and chips was delicious and there was a good selection of beer!
Amazing experience at this lovely pub after moving into the area. Food was brilliant but the highlight was the staff - all super accommodating and made me and my family feel at home. Despite the long queue, Rosie gave us water and seated us as quickly as she could. My daughter loved her! We’ll be back soon!
We had an amazing Sunday roast here for our friends birthday! It’s such a cute pub and the food was delicious. Mathilda was amazing at looking after us 😊
Went in for an after work drink and meal and was greeted by a lovely girl who helped me on what is best to drink and eat. Think her name was Ella but either way she was so lovely and because of her I had such a good experience there. The atmosphere was just right so I will definitely be back again. Thanks Ella!
Louise and colleagues looked after us amazingly. Always so helpful and friendly. Delicious food and quick service and good atmosphere with the Mercy Zone jazz band. No nicer way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
Lovely outside seating area. Very relaxed atmosphere on a lovely sunny day. Menu had a fair selection of food for lunch, and you ordered from the bar. Food came quickly and we both enjoyed our individual dishes. Would recommend and go back again myself
