A slightly delayed review. Took a trip out to Brixton (from Honor Oak) especially for a visit to Federation and well worth it it was too. A filter, served in a proper mug! was superb.
The simple food wares (blue cheese toasties) were also a welcome and tasty late afternoon lunch replacement.
If you're in Brixton, just go and try it.
If you're not, well, go there and try it as well...the nearby fish stalls come as an added bonus.
Good coffee, good food, nothing missing for me!
Best in Brixton!!!! Came here for holiday to visit one of my mates and came here every day practically. The pressed croissant and flat white. Gonna miss it. I'm in Paris now and get back to Brixton Friday. Then Monaco to Miami Saturday afternoon. So you can be sure I'm getting my last fix.
Love this place...great coffee and super friendly staff!
Great coffee, great food, great service, great people.
If I lived closer, I'd swing by much more often!
You meet the funkiest people at Federation!
Our Easter lunch was accomplished by an an amazing carrot cake and coffee, reccomended by very friendly and attentive staff member Enjoyed it so much! Thank u!! Happy Easter!
Im in your store and the taste of it compels me to say that your coffee is the best I've tasted in Europe!
Well done!

The place has been on my list for quite a long time but haven’t got the chance to give it a tick because my place is quite far from Brixton. But finally tried the coffee and it was very good. Wasn’t hesitate to try after I saw the perfectly neat latte art. The location itself is unique and the surrounding is one of a kind. Gave me a nice impression of Brixton!
Cute hipster cafe within the Brixton village! Read a lot of good things about this place and Definitely a good cup of coffee! My piccolo was perfect! Service was good, ambience really chilled. They also had good background music.
I did not have food this round, but from looking at what people ordered, it looked really delicious.
Rolled up in my turn ups for a flat white and smashed avocado. Flicked through my cross processed film photos. My hipster wet dream. Couldn't get my words out because of the distractingly beautiful girl behind the till. Everything arrived with speed. 4.5 too much of a coward to ask for her number.
Federation Coffee is a really nice venue where you will find a relax place perfect for a cup of coffee or some bites in the middle of Brixton Village.
This cafe stands out compared to the ones in the area. Tried it out this morning and the food was good. The staff very polite and friendly too. Unfortunately the coffee was average, but please note that I am comparing coffees to Melbourne standards.
Really good coffee, really good staff, really good banana bread and Anzac biccies. They do get busy but worth the wait. Definitely a good idea post Sunday brunch somewhere around Brixton market!
Serving great coffees for several years and one of the Brixton market pioneers, this is an excellent choice for your weekend flat white to sit in the market alleyway watch the crowd and read the papers. Good Anzac biccies.
I don't usually use the word delightful, it makes me sound like my 78 year old granny, but it perfectly describes Federation Coffee. Situated within the bustling Brixton market, this little gem serves lovely coffee, beautiful food and, crucially, is staffed by a really sound group people. My latte was excellent, I am by no means a connoisseur, but this seemed about as good a coffee as I've ever had. In addition, I had some kale fritters which were great - perfectly cooked, filling and flavoursome. Definitely worth a visit if you're ever in the area, as these guys seem to get everything right!
Great coffee, friendly service and a real sense of care is taken when it comes to the coffee experience here. Best coffee in Brixton.
One of the best Coffee's on London. Their flat white is a real treat. Friendly staff too!
Great coffee. In itself a good reason to make the trip from Nunhead.
Had a lovely flat white this afternoon followed by an "agogo" from the areopress which was exactly as described on the blackboard; a great cup with a hint of berries. The coffee comes from the square mile folk with some interesting choices on the filter front.
The baristas know their stuff and are very skilful in preparing the cups. Thank you guys, it's much appreciated.
As with everywhere in Brixton Village it's a pretty small but friendly space. Today 4 of us perched happily by the door. There are few tables inside and a couple outside but that was only for the brave or foolhardy in this weather.
If you like coffee you will love this place.
Very Good Coffee. Lovely flat white served with a smile
...enjoyed flat whites at Federation Coffee... The cakes here also looked delicious, but there was definitely no room ;) I will have to return for another flat white and a cake.
if you want a caffeine fix in brixton village go to federation coffee. there is much to love about federation coffee. the brightly stenciled sign board, the menu that is constructed in a colourful scrabble tile fashion and the flat whites and mocha's themselves.
My trip to check out Federation Coffee today reminded me of my early days living in London in 1999 when I shared a house in Streatham Hill with three really good friends, Beth, Steph and Paul. I had forgotten how fast the Victoria Line tube trains go between Vauxhall and Stockwell (seriously folks, it's like a roller coaster), then as the escalator took me up towards the rowdy reality of Brixton, I was suddenly a wide-eyed 29 year old Aussie again (please don't calculate how old that makes me now - it's just cruel). Turning left on to Brixton Road and then left again on to Coldharbour Lane, I gave a friendly nod to the good old Ritzy Cinema and as I walked I remembered late night adventures on this very thoroughfare, trying to look cool and "street" and then ending up with a cling film wrapped piece of tree bark, or a baggie of chamomile tea. It has really changed very little in 12 years (although no-one offered me spliff today) and my old haunts, Club 414 and the Dogstar are still the
So I stumbled upon Federation Coffee. A great little place serving good coffee in Brixton Village Market. You can tell these guys love their job. The barista made my flat white with care and attention. A rare thing these days. T’was a damn good flat white
Having not quite gained our caffeine fix at Wild Caper and wanting to explore Brixton's roastery options further, we trotted across the road to Brixton Village, a slighter airier and more structured version of the Market. Rows of delicious restaurants, independents mostly with only a sprinkling of chains, lie in wait. Our pick of the bunch: Federation Coffee.
Quite simply one of the best cups of coffee I've ever tasted, in very cute, rustic and creative surroundings.
this coffee shop is so cute that I want to snuggle in everytime I visit the market- smiling baristas, selections of some tarts, muffins and bana bread. ( Try it toasted, it really becomes a guilty pleasure for cold days!) the coffee roasts are quite exquisite, and I like the friendly and warm indoors here- not like the highstreet coffee places where everyone has the same expression, staring at the phone and looking out for a quick grab.
London being the tropical hothouse that it is, a typical summer's day never tips over 15 degrees, and always promises to be overcast and raining. As I am Photo Monkey's brother and Word Monkey's soon to be brother-in-law, it's my turn to have a crack at this blogging lark and provide a guest post for the site.
You needn't be reminded that that London is a destination for all food lovers all over the world as you can find every type of cuisine within its many boroughs only a short tube stop away. My first post takes you to Brixton Village, formerly Granville Arcade. Literally a multicultural location like no other in the city of London.
Brixton Village has a dozen or so 'pop up' restaurants all with their own flavours and style all selling high quality fresh foods at half the price of most places you find around the city. It is also where restaurateurs and chefs come to test their idea of 'the next big thing' for London and see if it captures the imagination of the food-loving public. The great thing about all the restaurants here is that owners use all of the tiny space available to them, with people fighting for tables or sitting crammed up against one another only to the lively atmosphere. As you can see from this extensive list from Hot Dinners, there are a slew of new restaurants ready to open up to test the waters before they find a permanent residence in central London. Most have open kitchens, fun-loving staff always up for a laugh - they need to be to deal with the hungry punters - and you have the added bonus of being able to have a superb meal for under 10 Squids (around $15 of your Australian dollars). It was an ideal place to spend a rainy day "Plate Hopping" around London's up and coming bright young things. As it says on the packet, I popped into a few different places during lunch or dinner, order only the staff member's personal recommendation and then move. By the end of the adventure I would finish up having a three-course meal in three different places.
Before I took on my first sitting I made a beeline and grabbed a coffee while I wondered around choosing my first food stop around Brixton Village. I stopped off at Federation Coffee, which I last visited when Photo Monkey was visiting in January.
It's a cosy place at the centre of the market that is always packed with a loyal customer base due to their top quality roast - "Contraband", which I am told is an ever changing combination of coffees from Brazil, Ethiopia, El Salvador, and Sumatra. I have also noticed there is always a strong possibility of a perfect coffee when the barista has either a Kiwi or Aussie accent.
Not the best curated place but amazing coffee in vibrant Brixton Village Market some more attention to the interior decor would help ...not many seats inside and only few table outside if you lucky to grab a spot is a very enjoyable place to suck in all the energy of the village market while sipping your coffee and people watching !
They also have some pastry I love their cinnamon ban with moka w/soy as combo!
I tried Federation out because I was passing through Brixton.
I’m glad I did.
This is a proper coffee shop with baristas who are knowledgeable about coffee and can give good advice.
I enquired about purchasing beans to take away and had a chat about the flavour profile of the coffee and the best grind for my Bialetti. The barista then let me try an espresso to ensure I was happy before buying.
The espresso was seriously good. The beans that were ground for me were only roasted a week ago and filled my vehicle with the most beautiful aroma all the way home.
I bought a flat white with Bonsoy and was very impressed. Balanced flavour and creamy texture all the way to the last drop.
My only gripe is that they didn’t have Oat milk (odd for a hipster coffee shop in 2018) and no vegan cake options either.
I’ll be back for the great coffee though.
Keep it up guys.
Baristas were super friendly and dedicated to their work. Seemed to really enjoy working there. Love the vibe, outdoor seating is really cool, they give you blankets to use while you're out there!
Small coffee shop in Brixton Village but good ambience and good coffee. As a digital nomad, the only thing I feel disappointed is no power outlets. I cannot stay longer. 😂
The coffee is always amazing (ask what they have on batch brew), the tunes are always banging, the food is simple but very high-quality and the staff are a delight.
One of the best places in Brixton for quality coffee - Pastries/cakes aren't too shabby either.
Sign at the door says F amazing coffee, and it really is! One of the best ones I've had in my life
I'm not a fan of drinking coffee outside my home, the culture of coffee drinking became crazy with all these hipster sub-cafe's that charge you a small mortgage for a cup of semi decent brew
Well.... This place is a bit different, the service is excellent, coffee is to die for and even in spite of being in the midst of the most redeveloped part of Brixton (sadly) it still stands strong. I will be coming back as they literally serve drinkable gorgeousness.
Very nice place to have breakfast. Banana bread is excellent toast with some butter.
I like to visit this beautiful coffee shop after met my close friend there. You must try it at least once. Everything make me satisfied and more than that.
Lovely staff and great coffee. Even though some of the staff have endured 10 days in a row they are still smiley. Amazing
Cracking coffee, we had the lotus biscoff waffle which was fabulous! Highly recommend!
Wonderful cafe and highly recommended! Our lunch was made with care and attention (even after we’d requested slight tweaks to the listed ingredients). Lattes and teas delicious. Service was prompt and attentive; the staff friendly and efficient. Seating is a mix of indoor and outdoor (under the covered market). Free local area WiFi. We would definitely eat here again.
The staff are so friendly but they all keep leaving. I blame the arsey customers who leave one star reviews complaining the staff are too friendly to customers and talk to them, thus keep them waiting in the queue. F them.
So happy to have my latte today always the best place waiting for my pain au chocolat 😋
