Reviews The Understudy

The understudy is a truly individual bar in a sea of chain stores along the south bank. The beer selection is always vast and all from local business. The staff are always friendly and a delight to talk to. The atmosphere is very relaxed and if you get in before rush hour you might even grab one of the comfy sofas. Great for a first date as it's casual but you have the south bank for a romantic stroll afterwards if all is going well ;). Highly recommend to anyone.

Great beer, nice staff, cool building and slightly hidden away so not overrun with tourists. Good outside space when the weather is nice. Also....really good toilets!

What a brilliant venue. Also drinks quite reasonable bearing in mind where it is.

Great spot for summer evening drinks. Can get quite busy so recommend booking in advance or going early. Plenty of seats around and you can always take a walk. I recommend their vegan pizza which is one of the best non-cheese pizzas I’ve tried. I prefer the normal fries over the masala ones. Drinks are relatively cheap too given london. Staff are super pleasant. Limited toilets

I love the Understudy and have been coming for a while now. But recently I’ve felt it’s lost the individualistic feeling that it used to have. I loved how it felt like a real assortment of people working there, all able to express themselves in their own style- a real artist and theatre vibe! But now they must of had a change of owners or something and they are all wearing the same black tops. Just feels like they’ve been made to look more uniform but that takes away expression and makes it feel more of a chain or something! Bit sad and I imagine they would want it to be back to the way it was too.

First time going here this week and was such a positive experience. The staff were lovely, one staff member with an afro (sorry I could not get your name) and the manager, in particular had excellent customer service. I had to change my food order and they were so understanding and so helpful. (Thank you again) Food was great and I would go back again in a heartbeat.

Great little bar part of the National Theatre. We sat outside enjoying the live music from the Riverside stage. All the bars had long queues but the staff were polite and helpful and we got served quickly. We ordered some great food...chicken strips and Bahjia Potatoes...a timer was given to notify when ready ..all delicious.

An excellent spot for a drink set back from the river and away from the busiest areas of town. The team have a great selection (especially beers on tap) and friendly staff. As well as the bar there are seats, sofas, tables and benches inside or out, in the sunshine(if you are lucky!) or shade to suit all preferences. Decor is low key with subtle lighting but big windows. A few bar snacks (eg crisps) and food options. Would definitely recommend.

Selection of 3 different fast/street food eateries in the same location. Food very good quality and great value, good ranch of drinks from the bars too. Option to sit inside or by the boardwalk next to the river.

Cheeky drink by the Thames before heading home via Waterloo. It was lovely weather so we loved the outside seating overlooking the River Thames.

Great location but it's become a little shabby round the edges over the years, the toilets are always flooded, the bar floor is somewhat sticky and it's so expensive. Cheapest pint now an eye watering £6.70.

Nice bar in central London! They ran out of a lot of the on tap drinks by about 7pm which wasn’t great however. Staff were friendly.

Amazing place to hang out and chat with friends! Better to do the chatting outside though, the music can get a bit loud inside. Their beers are nice, and you get a guy who looks like Russell Brand serve you which is pretty cool I guess
