You might recall I visited a fish and chip restaurant called Sutton & Sons at Boxpark in Shoreditch over the Summer. It didn’t blow me away. The food was great, but the venue just didn’t do it for me – it felt like a lot to pay (and a long time to wait) for a fish and chips takeaway experience. When I saw that they had a restaurant in Stoke Newington (where their fishmongers are based), I was keen to try it out to see how the experience would differ. And then a couple of weeks ago, I was invited to try out their brand new restaurant on Essex Road in Islington. On a Sunday lunchtime, Tim and I headed up there to see what it was all about. I can tell you right now, we were very impressed! And having grown up in Cyprus with beautiful fresh fish available all year round, we had high expectations.

What is it? Stoke Newington’s finest fish and chip offering has expanded with a third site opening on the emerging Essex Road in Islington. Their freshly caught, handpicked fish direct from Sutton & Sons Fishmongers in N16 is coated with their own special batter and served with hand-cut chunky chips.

Sutton & Sons’ (S&S) fishmongers was established in Stoke Newington High Street back in 1998 by Danny Sutton and, with wife Hana, opened their first restaurant across the road in 2010 with a reputation for serving the freshest fish and chips in London while remaining sustainably responsible.
Previously I'd written about S&S after I visited their Boxpark location. After this, I lauded over how great they were, even proclaiming them to be serving the best fish and chips in town. So when I caught wind that they were opening up a third location in Islington and was invited down for a taster, you can imagine I was rather enthusiastic.

Like its predecessors, the Islington menu reads like a fish and chip lover's Christmas list with a vast variety of deep-fried fish all coated with their own special batter and served with fresh hand-cut chunky chips. For the calorie counters, there is also the option to grill the fish. For those looking for something different however, breaded whitebait, tempura prawns and chip shop classics such as pies and battered sausages are also on offer with specials such as the tuna burger, lobster sub, grilled oysters and moules marinière sitting alongside.

Having already tried the S&S fish and chips, I went for something a bit different tonight with orders of the fresh tuna burger and the lobster sub. It was hard to turn down the fish and chips (they were soooo good) but I was not disappointed.

The tuna burger was beautiful and so fresh it tasted like the fish had just jumped onto my plate from the ocean. In truth, this wasn't far from reality given that the fish delivery to S&S had likely happened that morning and next thing, Matthew (site manager, chef and all round top guy) was slicing me off a massive steak from a huge slab of tuna ready for my grubby hands. That's quite alright with me thanks.

The lobster roll, filled with mayonnaise dressed lobster topped with a Cajun sprinkle, was equally delicious and was so rich, I couldn't help but just inhale it.

Our night finished with one of Mrs Sutton's tasty homemade desserts which tonight was a sticky toffee pudding topped with vanilla ice cream and sitting in a pool of caramel sauce. Oh my days this was a triumph! A template sticky toffee pudding of there ever was one and a definite recommendation from me.

So another location, another winner for S&S who are fast starting to become THE place to get quality seafood in London. There is now less and less reason not to find out for yourself. Get there.

I was really excited to try out the banana blossom fish, battered veggie sausage, and chips. My partner got the cod and chips. We both thought they were just okay and didn't live up to the built up hype - mainly the chips underwhelmed and there were A LOT of chips. The mushy peas were my least favorite in London but were okay. At least the staff was kind. Would maybe return and try either the Omni fish or veggie calamari.

Vegan Review - Went to try the vegan options and we got the Battered Banana Blossom, Battered Scampi and chips. The banana blossom tasted great, the batter was on point and the blossom mimicked cod really well. Same can be said about the vegan scampi. The service was first class and we were o to sit on the high chairs to eat, unfortunately the seated area was closed when we went. Also they need to provide tomato ketchup free of charge as opposed to charging for a small sachet. I don't see difficult it is to have a big bottle of ketchup with the salt and vinegar tray.

Unfortunately the vegan fish and chips were tasteless, or at least the vegan fish. Since everyone was talking about the vegan fish on the internet, I expected more. The regular fish was fine I was told (I haven't tried it). The staff was very friendly. The prices ok.

We visited here after reading about the awards they got for their vegan fish and chips not so long ago and since we were in London on holiday we had to make the trip. We were delighted to see so many options and we're absolutely delighted with the vegan banana blossom option which was full of flavour and had a really great texture. Well worth the visit and we are just sorry we can't go every week 😅

Came here after seeing it on the insider because they offer vegan fish and chips which sounded interesting so I thought I'd try. The fish was delicious and really tasty I couldn't fault it, the chips tasted really good and the helping was generous but I appreciated that. The service was excellent there were no problems at all, the cook at the front and the 2 servers did a great job. Highly recommend Sutton and Sons Fish and Chips

I've read good things about this place. Paid about £11 for this cod with chips, which at first seemed a lot (I'm from poor country 😄) for a lunch, but the portion is so BIG, that I wasn't able to finish it even as a dinner 😭😭 (probably because of how hot these days are). 100% recommended

Stumbled upon this place by accident and decided to drop in for a quick lunch. They apparently have many vegan options, I did not try those and went for the classic, plus the curry sauce and a beer. I am not an expert when it comes to fish and chips, but what I had was decent, the sauce was a nice addition to the fish. The chips are big and chunky, some people don't like them that way, but they were good. They do not have a toilet, if they did, I would have given 5 stars. I mean, after the beer, you need a toilet, right? :-)

Amazing fish and chips. Sutton and Sons is definitely one of the best fish and chip shops I’ve eaten at in London. The cod was of high quality and the chips were cooked to perfection. They also offer very reasonable lunch time deals! Would definitely recommend. Would be 5 stars if they took card.

It was my mother's first time in London and the UK and I knew I had to take her to Sutton & Sons for some vegan fish and chips. She's not vegan, but I am and she was keen to try for herself the fish and chips I had spoken so highly of. The battered banana blossom blew her away, and the battered OMNI was an enjoyable alternative. Both of us don't really care for processed meat alternatives, so the concept of using a natural flower as a fish substitute is genius. Definitely give them a try, and say hi to Angie for me!

A fish store is out this shop. The fish cooked after receiving an order is fresh and tasty! I think this restaurant is the only restaurant in London where you can eat fish and chips of this high level.

Very good cod fish: crispy and juicy! Normal portion of fries is huge, fries itself ok.

We order this every couple of weeks on deliveroo and it is fantastic every time. We usually go with cod or haddock. Both equally good. This was the first time we ordered fries instead of chips and they did not disappoint. The mushy peas are always good as well. My only complaint is that there have been a few times they have forgotten the lemon. There’s a button you can tick for lemon included that’s free. Not the end of the world! Definitely recommend this place! Always arrives hot!
