Great place to start our date night! Awesome cocktails at a decent price compared to some other cocktail bars I have been to and the staff were chatty, friendly and happy to recommend places move on to.
Very, very good. Incredible drinks, great food. Was a busy Saturday night and staff were on point. Being in the industry I completely respect what they are doing. Will be back.
Finally had the pleasure of attending The Shrub and Shutter on Friday evening. The service was fantastic, the cocktails amazing and the food!!! The pork chop with apple ketchup is LITERALLY the best thing I have ever eaten!! It was incredible!
A truely unique hidden gem, imaginative food and cocktails, passionate staff, I've been twice an love it!
Delicious and interesting food, very tasty cocktails and super service. Highly recommend.
Amazing cocktails, very clever food, great service from Dave and the team. A very deceptive place, it looks nothing from the outside, but once you're inside it opens up at the back with contemporary decor.
Dave is a beautiful beast:) great vibes, drinks and food xxx
Sshh. Don’t tell people about this place. We want it all to ourselves!
Seriously though, always a great night here. Dave is an incredible host, innovative cocktails and great food......there is nothing not to LOVE about S&S.
Brilliant! Had an alcohol free drink for great price! Super customer service and environment! Totally recommended ;)
Totally brilliant place. Cocktails are an amazing piece of food theatre. Staff super friendly and efficient too. Thanks for a great night out!
Attended the hectic fantastic Disney event and was blown away by the innovation and effort behind all the cocktails and the menu. Fantastic service and a drink that came in a glass slipper?! Perfection. Think the boys I was with all releases their inner princesses, and not only due to the drinks!
Best cocktails in south london, perhaps all of London?
Fantastic food. Fantastic cocktails. Go ang have a happy face.
Insanely tasty and inventive food and drink. Super friendly staff❤️
We went for the food rather than the cocktails, although the cocktails all looked pretty good and very elaborate! The food was great. Squid and Kimchi cakes were fresh tasty and spicy. The beetroot barrisia was heavenly, as we're the potatoes with anchovies. We shared buttermilk chicken with chickpea chips, the sea bass and mackerel! All in all a more than surprisingly good local restaurant. Booking is definitely necessary. I loved it.
Great spot. Cocktails are delicious, particularly the sublime pistachio cupcake.
Staff were super friendly and Jay Z was blasting, nothing wrong with that : )

They say Brixton is gentrified, but I have my doubts. Located on the Southern end of the Victoria line, 15 minutes or so from Oxford Circus, it is a world away from central London proper. Emerging from Brixton station I’m instantly hit with noises and smells, freshly popped corn from a street seller mingling with the clinking of steel drums, and through this I’m buffeted by the insistent thrum of undulating bodies. Whilst there is heaps of character and a fervour of life that cannot be denied, Brixton still has the general feel of being bit tatty and downtrodden, and the path leading to our cocktail bar this afternoon is littered with neglected carpet shops, poundlands, and butchers. It may be unfair to compare the area to the West End, but even a side-by-side comparison to Clapham doesn’t do this little pocket of Lambeth many favours, a state of affairs that is poles apart to the bar itself.
With the high street and central areas of Brixton becoming increasingly off limits to independent businesses because of rent hikes and high business rates, sole traders have to look for premises in ‘secondary’ areas that may initially be less appealing. It’s interesting to speculate what Brixton may look like in five or ten years time; currently the railway arch traders are under threat of eviction due to redevelopment – will they ever come back to their original locations? Will Brixton become yet another ‘clone-town’ full of the chains which dominate our high streets?
Promoting itself as a cocktail bar, we were more impressed by the food, with in our view dishes standing out well against the vast majority of local restaurant competition by the quality ingredients, expert cooking and professional presentation. Well done, keep it up and we are definitely returning soon.
The Vibe
Every so often a venue will come along that simply blows your socks off. The Shrub and Shutter has done just that and I’d even go so far as to crown it my best new bar of 2014. Tea lights flicker invitingly ushering you in from the early evening darkness and an unassuming shop front belies the wondrousness of what lies within. Part botanical workshop, part bookish hipster cafe, Chris Edwards and Dave Tregenza have furnished this place expertly with a keen eye for detail that doesn’t go unappreciated and the result is akin to the Danish concept of ‘hygge’, roughly translating as ‘cosy’ meaning you feel welcome to spend hours here. Perfect place to bring a date then.
The Order
Food and drink geeks, behold! There is a new altar in town. The Shrub and Shutter offer so much variety, weekly changing specials and just about a tonne of passion. For him, try the ‘deer hunter’ cocktail (tincup bourbon, orange, SotE smoking pipe bitters, capovilla tabacco amarone and birch sap), it comes served with a mouthful of venison. For her, how about the ‘harler vin’ (tito’s handmade vodka, the crusher pinot noir, fresh lemon, vanilla sugar and plum bitters) served with frozen grapes. Both are perfection, much like everything we tried on the menu. The ‘owl and the pussycat’ comes served with a teeny tiny cheeseboard which is delectable and the perfect accompaniment. There is also a great list of bar snacks including a sumptuous chicken liver parfait served with sauternes jelly and toast.
The Game
Brixton is the perfect date location given its eclecticism and bold personality. The Shrub and Shutter is the newest addition to the scene but may find itself featuring in any number of future Brixton date permutations. You could visit the latest exhibition at the Black Cultural Archives and afterwards head down Coldharbour lane for a sneaky cocktail and some exceedingly delicious bar snackettes. Or, why not make early evening reservations and have supper and a few cocktails before catching a movie at the Ritzy cinema for some romantic back row action, popcorn-stuck-to-your-top notwithstanding. Alternatively, dine elsewhere, maybe in Market Row or Brixton village, but bring your date to Shrub to impress them with the cocktail of their lives. A nice time to visit would be an evening midweek or even a Saturday afternoon, when you are likely to have the bar all to yourselves, and the friendly staff can really lavish their attention on you. It’s a great spot and you will certainly win all kind of cool points for bringing your date here so what are you waiting for?
The Faults
All I will say is good things come in small packages.
Sex Factor.
4.
First look at the soft opening:
We were warmly welcomed with a Nuclear Daiquiri of sorts (with an apple sour ice cube / sweet at the bottom) and an impressive plate of snacks, a hint of small plates to come once fully open.
After a quick skim of the menu, we ordered our first round.
Bandage of Brothers (snow queen vodka, poppy liqueur, wolfschmidt kummel, sherbert, sweetener, gunpowder) came with a little army man attached via a plaster, and a banger to throw on the floor at any time - the element of surprise and all that. All good fun, though I'm not entirely sure how the super sweet drink connects to the title.
The Shrub & Shutter intrigued Luke with blowtorched fennel & chlorophyll bitters garnishing a glass of gin, green chartreuse, maraschino, cucumber shrub and toasted fennel sugar.
Lauren opted for a No Stone Left Unturned - effectively a sour with a choice of spirits and rotating flavour based on the stone fruit of the day (cherry in this case).
However, I feel I made the best choice with Does A Bear Shit in the Woods? - St George's Terroir Gin (made with pine), Akvavit (distilled Scandinavian spirit), pine bitters and mancino ambrato vermouth served with smoked salmon on the side. I can't resist a "spirits-focused" drink and this Scandi gin martini twist was right up my street, and the salmon (working well with the pine) was an added bonus.
For round two, Caroline ordered pudding in the form of Wonka Bar - gin, vanilla ice cream, chocolate soil, truffle, gold leaf and truffle bitters. The finer ingredients seemed to get lost in the mix but it was a very drinkable boozy milkshake.
Luke's Little Miss Sunshine was one of the more conventional drinks on the menu - an attractive sunny Bloody Mary with Beluga Vodka, Isle of Wight yellow tomato, tomato water, roasted balsamic shrub, celery, spice & seasoning - very tasty at all times of the day.
Vegetarians should steer clear of The Deer Hunter - woodford bourbon, orange, romeo y julieta bitters and birch sap, with a hunk of venison on the side for good measure. Boozy and delicious.
Dare I say it, I think I won round two as well. You Can't Handle Chartreuse arrived in a wonderful bath-shaped glass (don't go stealing them now!), with chilled gummy bears and neat squares of green chartreuse jelly on top. If only bathtime always involved Portobello Road gin, Del Maguey mezcal, yellow chartreuse, pineapple, lemon & elderflower.
All the while we were serenaded by a jazz trio who squeezed themselves into the corner of the relatively small back room. Live music will be a regular occurrence, think ragtime / blues piano.
Only half the cocktails were available on our visit, so I'm sure they have plenty more surprises up their sleeves, including some wacky sharing cocktails. A return visit is in order for more research, but on this showing Shrub & Shutter will be a popular addition to the Brixton bar scene. Well done lads.
Great atmosphere and even better drinks. The Pisco Sour was one of the best I've had outside of Chile! My new favourite venue.
Was introduced to the place a week ago and gotta say - very impressed! The place has this cosy, intimate vibe with a few small tables in the front, which is great for dates, but there’s also some bigger space for bigger get togethers in the back. We tried marinated olives (delicious product), empanadillas (perfect crispiness), croquettas de manchego (sooo nice and creamy inside), bavette steak (fire!), roasted fennel (liked the nutty finishing A LOT) and finished it all off with some really hot oxtail nuggets. Especially the latter were something to write home about. Actually, everything was, including delicious cocktails and very professional yet friendly staff <3 (thank you so much Alfie and Claudia!). I hope I’ll be able to drop by again sooner than later!
This is the cutest little place. Awesome cocktails, and great small plates. The old fashioned, amazing! Loved the the DJ in the back room too. Perfect for a date night. Will visit again.
Amazing night here! Brilliantly curated food and drink menu which changes often. Service was top drawer and the soundtrack was great too! One of the best bars in London IMO
Understated cocktail bar which has a huge space at the back for more tables and people. It's a really welcoming venue with lots of little touches like pictures, drinks and bottles. The cocktail bar is right in front of you and looks like a workshop! Good value for cocktails at £10 ish each. Great for dates or catching up in general. Does do food and also wine but we didn't indulge.
Our favourite bar in south London! A lovely hidden spot with fabulous drinks and wonderful, welcoming staff. The drinks really are spectacular and original. We keep coming back to try the new specials. They always have flavours and combinations you couldn't find anywhere else.
I've been there 4 or 5 times since the new management took over, and I've gotta say that it's becoming my new favourite spot in Brixton. Super cosy vibe, great music, attentive and knowledgeable staff, fantastic fresh food, and very good, balanced cocktails that are on point! A must visit in South London.
Probably, almost definitely, the best cocktails I've had in London. The cocktails have a kick, a lasting memory which has made Shrub and Shutter my go to cocktail bar in London! The food is great too, full of flavour!
But to top it off are the staff who make you feel at home with their great hospitality and personable vibes - in particular Liam, with the good energy and jokes!
