We enjoyed our sushi train experience at this unassuming restaurant. Decor is bare but we didn't mind - the place was mostly full but it was still remarkably quiet, which made a great contrast to so many places in London where you have to shout to be heard by your friends. The selections from the sushi train were on the whole excellent - the fish was fresh, the sushi rolls tasty. The only two that weren't quite up to scratch were the seaweed (not the freshest) and eggplant (the skin was a bit tough). Overall we loved it and are planning to come back - especially as it's very good value (around £25 for the two of us).
So, my foodie travelling got me quite hungry for the day and I seem to always end up in Covent Garden for some reason. Thinking that I should avoid the piazza area, I tried to walk streets surrounding the area to find something new to eat at. As I just followed my feet, I suddenly found myself staring at a sushi place tucked into one small alleyway. Kulu Kulu Sushi seems unassuming and quaint and does not exactly scream Sushi and Sashimi from the get-go. But again, I fell into the trap of judging a place by its outside appearance. Boy was I in for a treat.
Since we got here last November, I've always told one of my friends I would get up and try to eat in Yo! Sushi, a well-known revolving sushi bar in Downtown Kingston. Little did i know, Kulu Kulu Sushi was a revolving sushi place! Yeah, somehow my feet brought me to a place I've been craving for since i got here.
The biggest trap that I noticed conveyor belt sushi places seems to have is the tendency to go overboard in both eating and costs. Sadly, this seems to be the case here as well. They have these small plates with the prices on the wall above but if your eyes are enamored by the gigantic cuts of salmon, you'd look past the 4.90 quid price tag on it. And the same goes for the slices of stir fried eggplant in teriyaki glaze that cost 2.90. Was the food good? Yes. Were the slices of fish fresh? Damn straight they were. Is this a place I would go to when I am so hungry that this will serve as my brunch? Not really. It's never a good idea to come here with a completely empty stomach as you will also leave with a burning hole in your pocket but, if you can stomach the price, the food, portions, and freshness of the dishes are second to none. The place is quite quaint as well, opting to go with functionality over aesthetics, with the long segment of the conveyor belt situated in the middle of everything. Guests are seated, bar style, with the chefs in the middle, ready and willing to serve dishes that don't generally appear on the belt.
I would recommend Kulu Kulu Sushi as a quick night cap to an otherwise filled day, just as a night ender meal to someone who doesn't necessarily need to have a heavy meal. The lunch rush would be better served in another place with the price providing you with a heavy feeling after your meal. But would I come back? Absolutely. The thick fresh salmon slices really got to me. And don't get me started with the vegetables they served, one of which was spinach with a preserved peanut glaze. It is great to see these places get their props because they seem to be few and far in between. But definitely, I am putting this on my list of top Japanese restos in London.
Sincerely,
Your Neighborhood Hungry FatSpiderMan
I was craving sushi really badly but I didn’t want to go to wasabi and get something average. After doing some research, I stumbled across Kulu Kulu. Truthfully, the name caught my attention more than anything. Since it was close to uni, my friend and I decided to go for a quick lunch. From the outside it’s not the prettiest, the inside is also quite small. Luckily for us, we avoided the lunch time crowd (we got there around 1.30pm) so we were able to get a seat straight away. The people were really friendly and the sushi looked soooo good. There were quite a few options on the conveyor belt and they all looked delicious so I was definitely excited. The sushi pieces were huge! Most of them were 2 pieces so if you’re sharing it’s perfect. The thing I liked about Kulu Kulu is that it has a very home-y feel to it. The wasabi and ginger are provided in plastic containers and the tissues are still in their tesco-value type tissue boxes. It was really cosy. The only complaints I have is that, you have no clue how much the plates are or what the sushi/ dumplings are! Since I’m a pescetarian, I had to be careful of the dumpling plate because I wasn’t sure what the filling was made of! Also, despite there being a lot on the belt, it was mostly the same dish rotating two or three times so it would have been nice to see more of the menu going around on the belt.
This restaurant is actually my go-to sushi dive. Kulu Kulu Sushi is a chain, they have another location in South Ken and one more somewhere else but I'd like to draw particular attention to the Covent Garden location as it is really special, unassuming and is definitely overlooked.
Here's the scoop. Kulu Kulu is a 'conveyor-belt' Japanese restaurant. It is always crowded, always just a bit messy and always tasty as hell. If you are in Covent garden and want to have a really tasty lunch, go here. You'll probably have to wait a few minutes for the waitstaff to find you a spot on the belt, but it is well worth it.
Alternatively, (and this is what I do) get take-out at lunch time. All take-out is 10% off and the portions you will get are huge. Hands down the best hidden gem and perfect for cheap but really excellent quality sushi meal.
Conveyor belt sushi. Good sushi restaurant on the edge of Covent Garden. A bit off the beaten track, so generally full of regulars and people in the know. Very informal - just turn up and find a seat. The food is excellent, and there are daily specials. Collect food off the convenor belt, then pay by taking your empty plates up at the end.
For me, Kulu Kulu stand out from the crowd for their fabulous temaki, which are always made fresh to order, and filled very generously with an assortment of options, including tempura prawn and soft shell crab. They also offer good quality, fresh sashimi at very reasonable prices.
Cosy, friendly and lovely sushi on the belt! One of the covent gardens best kept secret. Does get pretty busy during lunch times mind you...so get in a bit early if you can :)
You have to be picky about sushi and Kulu Kulu is one of my favorite hidden spots that has a sushi train. The maki is delicious, the sashimi fresh and the prices are low.
I always think you can tell good sushi when the seaweed on the temaki is still crisp - let's you know it hasn't been sitting on the conveyer belt too long. Kulu Kulu doesn't disappoint on any level.
I first came here with a Japanese friend and really can't recommend it enough. The sushi bar is fantastic, the food of a high quality and the prices incredibly reasonable. It never fails to amaze me how low the bill is when they count the plates! They give you generous cups of green tea (which you can keep refilling). Can sometimes be hard to find a seat (or two together on the bar) during peak times.
No frills, good quality and reasonably priced.
We sat down for a quick bite before a show and were not disappointed. Most of the sushi was really fresh and tasty (bar one chicken dish that had gone a little cold on the train).
We spent £20 between us and had 7 plates, which filled us up nicely.
California roll was the clear winner!
I really love this little sushi place. Great, fresh food. Fairly traditional but still a wide range of dishes. Salmon sashimi is extremely good plus they do a lovely mashed potato dish with pickled cucumber and carrot. Always easy to get a seat at the counter. It's a good, quick option for lunch with discounts often being applied to your bill.
They say they are no frills and they mean it but the sushi is just amazing!
Great food, it is my go-to sushi place if I want some solid quality sushi. Never fails to deliver, and the sushis are quite big in size! Although not quite authentic, it still adheres to the cuisine’s standards. The architecture itself also adds to the whole Japanese style theme. Created with a Japanese style layout in mind. As of now, it’s prolly the most authentic Japanese sushi place I’ve been to in London to which you don’t need to pay a ridiculous price for
I've been coming to this branch for years. The conveyor belt sushi is quick, tasty, and affordable. I try to sit nearer to where the conveyor comes out of the kitchen for the best selection. If you want something that isn't on the conveyor, there is also a menu that you can order from. I like the self serve green tea.
Good sushi, for a decent prices and free refills on green tea. I don't know what more you want really. It is a no frills place that just lets you sit and eat. Whether alone or with a group of mates it is a place to go when you want good sushi but not pay the prices of Sticks n Sushi around the corner (which is incredible but pricey)
They also do 10% off your bill some nights!
I love this place. I go there for lunch most days and the staff are friendly and always bring my my regular without me even asking. They pay attention to detail and the fish is always fresh. Plate sizes are huge and good value for money. On Wednesday they have special prices :D yum yum
This is an absolute no FUSS and inexpensive sushi joint! Yes, it's not your typical sushi restaurant that decorates your plate with unnecessary things. You go there just for the food and nothing else. This is not a place where you would find different types of sushi rolls but rather simple rolls, of course you can request the sushi chef to make something for you too. It's not fancy, it's meant to be quick, fresh and good. I'd choose this over Itsu any day. Order their sashmi, spice tuna handroll and avacado tempura salmon hand roll (my fav). Enjoy!
I visit Kulu Kulu on a regular basis. It's my source of reasonably priced and tasty sushi.
Yes, there is a bit too much rice in the rolls and yes, the sashimi is not quite Nobu level but Kulu Kulu always meets my expectations / needs.
I know conveyor belt sushi is often perceived to being a tourist gimmick but I like the ability to eat as much / little as I feel like at the time.
Reasonably priced sushi made with fresh fish. The rolls were too big for my taste (and mouth!), but good. Not a big variety, but more than enough for a meal.
My fav sushi place in london, this place is a great place to grab some quick , tasty, great value Sushi. its a conveyor belt style sushi restaurant serving great sashimi, hand rolls, tempura, sushi rolls etc you can grab food straight off the belt or get food made to order. i highly recommend the salmon sashimi which is always really fresh and tasty and also the fried aubergine dish. Free green tea, really relaxed laid baid atmosphere great for a pre theatre bite to eat.
Reasonably priced & tasty dishes. Service can be a bit slow if there's a rush and only one member of staff to provide drinks. Perfect for a quick, light dinner before heading to the theatre.
Uncomplicated sushi joint just off the beaten path but close to Covent Garden. Decent quality food without any frills. Reasonable value for money considering the location. Will return if passing by.
Delicious sushi in central London - good value for money and you get free green tea and unlimited refills.
Sushi made right in front of you - I have always enjoyed it every time I come here.
My fav sushi place for lunch in London. Try the special spicy salmon/tempura prawn hand roll and the soft shell crab hand roll, worth travelling for miles for.
I love this chain, the sushi is always nice, better if you order than the conveyer belt, its simple and totally lacking in pretension. There is probably better sushi in London but this place is definitely a good stable.
