Steak + chips + salad + red wine = simple formula that works. If you like the look of this sum then you can do a whole lot worse than the Popeseye in Kensington.  Just writing this blog is making my mouth water and I've just eaten lunch.

The dining room is simply set out, and in the corner of the room, there's a minute kitchen where the steak is griddled.

No bread, no first courses and no vegetables beyond chips and salads.  Simple, great cuts of meat which will give any steak house in town a run-for-its-money.   Popeseye is, in fact, the Scottish name for rump steak.  No surprise then the beef is sourced from the Highlands and is 100% grass fed.

And you can taste the quality.  The steaks are not just good, they are incredible.  Seared from the griddle, falling off the plate.  There are three cuts of steak on the menu - rump, sirloin and fillet - in sizes ranging from 6oz to 30oz.  You don't come to the Popeseye if you don't want steak and you don't order anything more than the 6oz if you're not in it for the long haul.  The largest steak falls just short of 2lbs and that is a lot of meat.

Steak is delivered with a tray of sauces - four types of mustard, mayonnaise, and ketchup, Béarnaise but to be honest don't spoil it.

Pace yourself mind, the puddings are homemade and I dare you to try and leave without trying the mouth-watering melting middle brownies - even if you are ready to give birth to a food baby.

The wine list is well priced and features wine from pretty much most of the wine producing countries.

One other thing you should know, they don't accept credit cards, it's cash only so visit the cashpoint before you go - there's not a hole-in-the-wall anywhere near.

They've another branch in Putney but I can't vouch for that.

It seems rather mundane, and really, it is. The steaks are fine and the prices are good, but it's so basic I couldn't escape the feeling I could have done the same thing in my house. If you can't cook a decent steak though, I'd give it a go. Just don't expect much else.

Very quaint neighbourhood steak house that serves fuss-free steaks which are grilled by the solo-steak maestro 10 feet away from you. Had the 30 ounce T-bone which was amazing but could have used a bit more seasoning; likely done this way to allow you to utilise the sauces but am a purist so unable to give full points for this reason. Biggest surprise was the best damn sticky toffee pudding I’ve ever had in my life for dessert.

Very decent steak! Super simple concept: steak & chips. Nothing else, but well done! The chips were actually incredible, super thick and chunky but fluffy. The steak was very nicely charred and crisp, but in my opinion the meat itself lacked flavour. From 100% grass fed Scottish beef I would have expected more of that characteristic grass fed taste but that wasn’t really there. Still good though!

Had a really special birthday dinner here. Absolutely delicious food and an excellent wine list. The meat was cooked to perfection and the chips - OMG. Insanely yummy! Service was also faultless. I’m definitely going to make this my regular. I noticed that another table was set and ready with wine decanted for a regular. What a service!

Every single dish is spot on here. Chips and cheesecake went down too quickly and missed opportunity to take photos. Ate Highland fillet which was on special and followed by another ribeye steak. I wish my stomach can take in more. Total satisfaction.

One of the best steaks I have ever had. Take the round cut, or what they call the Pope's Eye, it is perfection. So tender and full of flavor it is a work of culinary art. The French fries are also the absolute best, true British fries you just cannot have anyplace else in the world. Service is friendly and efficient.

Popeseye is a "pure" steakhouse, unlike the fancy ones that have been around lately. Focusing only on delivering quality meat cuts accompanying them with a good selection of wines. Lovely people are running the restaurant; if you are looking for a trendy place, look elsewhere; if you are a meat lover, you must visit the site. A hidden gem at Hammersmith.

This is *the* place to go if you want some beef and have the money for it. It's small and charming, staff is warm and welcoming, and they have a challenge. The place is great, but none of that will matter once you try the fillet and the fries it comes with. SO GOOD.

If ever you needed to be reminded that London has hidden culinary gems around every corner this is it! The simplest of menus, the highest level of service and probably one of the best steaks I've eaten in a very long time. If you want great food without the pretentiousness of so many 'high end' steak houses then this is the place for you!

Great meat and service. We are coming here every year while we are in London for a tradeshow. It’s a tradition and will not change! Small, so you need a reservation.
