Best place ever with best drink menu. The stuff is cool and they’re all professional. It’s worth a visit for a tourist and for whoever likes to drink good stuff. Never a disappointment.

Had the opportunity to experience this place on my trip to London last year. It was like no place else that I had or have experienced. The drinks are one of a kind and the bartenders artisans of their trade. The food and setting take you into the past. A one of a kind, there is no doubt how The Sun Tavern won one of the best new pubs of 2015.

A bit small, full of personality. Great customer service from genuinely friendly and smily people. Good drinks, plenty of choices, unfortunately I haven't tried the food... yet.

The Sun Tavern, formerly the Sun Tavern (a pub of that name has been there since 1851), is the second establishment from the guys behind the Discount Suit Co. and I'm happy to report that it is just as likeable as their first place.

From the outside it doesn't look open, but have faith and push open those doors. Inside is, indeed, what I would describe as a tavern - cosy and low-lit with blinds covering the windows giving it the darkened look from outside.

I went at about 5pm on a Sunday afternoon for my first visit and there it was populated but there were still a few tables available. I went back again the other night - a Saturday night - and we again managed to get a seat, but only just.

Discount Suit is an underground cocktail den, whereas this place is more pubby so you won't feel like you're missing the point if you have a wine (as I did on Saturday) or one of the local beers and ciders written on a board at the back of the bar. But, of course, they do still know their cocktails and this makes up the focus of the menu. So on that Sunday evening I had to try a couple in the time I was there.

First up the Peach Fuzz. Gin, sherry, creme de peche, served in a metal tankard with a pile of ice like a julep. Their menu is divided into Tankard Drinks and Mixed Drinks. So I went for the 12 Mile Limit off the Mixed Drinks to try one of each. White rum, cognac, rye mixed with some grenadine and lime. This was my kind of drink. Strong and punchy and prettily garnished with flowers. And all the cocktails are either £7.50 or £8.00. My kind of prices. Well, sort of. Wine comes in choices of red, white or fizz and a very small glass (125ml) is £4.50. Expensive for unlabelled wine. Better to go for a bottle which is a very reasonable £16.

Bethnal Green is turning into the place to be if it isn't already and The Sun Tavern makes it even more of a worthy destination.

From one beautiful bar to another, the folks from Discount Suit Company have moved above ground with The Sun Tavern, an atmospheric neighbourhood bar on Bethnal Green Road.

"Steeped in history, the site formerly known as The Sun Inn was built in 1851 and has been a local favourite in the heart of East London ever since. Notable regulars have included the Kray twins and the pub was also used as a meeting place for the local boxing fraternity for many years."

Cocktails were flying out from behind the bar, some in eye-catching tankards (£8) and others in more conventional glassware (£7.50). But what's this, effort going into cocktails AND beer in the same bar? Did I miss something? Are we in New York? We Londoners aren't very good at multitasking, so it's nice to see somewhere try to provide exciting drinks for more than one group. That said, those in search of some fine wines only get to choose between house red, white or fizz. Sorry.

But yes, the beer. There are 10 taps of "Local Heroes" (e.g. Beavertown, Redchurch, Five Points) that rotate regularly, and some top bottles in the fridge too. Pints (that's right, not 2/3) are served in pleasing thick-rimmed glasses that feel like steins. They look a little silly next to some of the cocktails, but who cares?

The tankard cocktails are drinkable but a little sweet for my tastes. Jacques De Sores (Rhum Agricole, Cuban Rum, Velvet Falernum, Lime, Honey Water, Angostura Bitters, Topped with Prosecco) fared the best. Ask your bartender about their sharing punch for £25 that serves 4.

Mixed drinks were more successful. Two Irish Men (Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey, Cocchi Americano, Benedictine and Peychaud's Bitters) and 2nd Avenue (Teelings Irish Whiskey, Calvados, Lemon, Fresh Grenadine, Passion Fruit Syrup & Orange Blossom Water) were my kind-of boozy, or spirits-forward as I learned to ask for in the States. They also handled requests for classics well with some fine Negronis, Sazeracs and Old Fashioneds.

The Sun Tavern is a lively boozer that is bound to be a huge hit. Prices are affordable and there should be something for everyone on the menu. And if you are looking for more exciting wine options in the same evening, you don't have to go far to reach Sager & Wilde's Mission.

What's more, it opens up as early as 9am for local coffee and pastries, and thereafter provides scotch eggs, pork pies, grilled sandwiches etc to soak up all of those drinks.

Yet another reason to move to Bethnal Green...

We enjoyed a Sunday evening cocktail here; I particularly recommend the Bonnie Margarita made with scotch bonnet chillies if you like your drink with a kick! Also a good range of local beers and an incredible range of Irish Whiskeys which we will definitely try next time. Bar staff were friendly & knowledgeable and it was a warm and friendly place.

🚇 Bethnal Green 🍺 £5.50 London Pilsner ❤️ A stylish Bethnal Green watering hole. . The Sun Tavern is nestled on a corner on Bethnal Green Road and is just a stones throw away from Bethnal Green Tube. . Originally opened in 1851 as The Sun Inn. Refurbished in the Seventies, some of its original decor lost, this place faced closure for many years. In 2014 The Sun Tavern was born. . This is a compact place with a distinct cocktail bar feel. The decor consists of exposed brickwork, weathered timbers and a stunning contemporary servery. The seating is a mix of stools around the bar and ledges, at the front and back of the bar are comfy banquettes and low level stools around tables. . I had a slight faux pas when trying to order a beer, I noticed there were no pumps on the bar so I asked if they sold beer? I then noticed the ten pumps behind on the back bar which were so obvious just after I asked the question 🤓. I ordered a pint of London Pilsner, my pint was tickerty boo and under six quid. There is a good selection of cocktails and spirits to go at, most cocktails cost around £9. No food as such but you can order Mediterranean style nibbles to soak up the sauce. . I turned up mid afternoon on a Saturday and there were a dozen or so punters in attendance. The crowd was predominantly hipster with only two looking like Meg from Family Guy. The atmosphere was very welcoming and the service was spot on, the gentleman who served me after my faux pas was gracious and personable. Not long after I settled in some musicians came in to set up for the evening’s entertainment, we exchanged a bit of banter on the amount of gear they had, a nice bunch of fellas. One side note, the Khazi plays whale music which makes for a unique toilet experience. . @thesuntavernbg is more bar/cocktail-bar with a hint of pub. Ten years ago someone saved this place and turned it in to a popular destination for a younger upcoming crowd which is commendable. I enjoyed my visit here but maybe not one for pub traditionalists, this is a great place to bring your better half. . ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 04.02.23

My girlfriend and I love coming here! The staff are friendly and the cocktails are well balanced and interesting, the best I’ve had in a pub by a mile and better than most cocktail bars. The atmosphere is always warm and homely, and Darcy the host always does a great job looking after us

A place where they want you to notice the music, ‘cause it’s good! Stripped back decor, heavy-handled beer mugs, laid-back cool. If they keep the place afloat selling the odd £100 shot of poitin to the tourists, no problem. Keeps it going for the rest of us #15 #45

The sun tavern is the best bar in Bethnal green. I've been going to this bar for years and it's a totally unique atmosphere. Words can't describe how amazing this bar is. You have to experience it for yourself. The staff are always friendly, they're so attentive. You can ask questions, they don't get annoyed or frustrated with you. It gets really busy so if you want a seat get there before 7pm, otherwise you'll struggle to get a seat 🙂

This lovely small pub is located at the 441 of Bethnal Green Rd, London E20AN The Sun Tavern is a cozy and very intimate place where you'll gonna enjoy your staying, especially during the evening when you will be delighted by the candle light. To the best of my experience is one of the pub with the greatest with whiskeys selection. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. Prices are in accordance to what you will choose to have, if you're in for a treat you could end up by paying 30 pounds for a double Bushmills 21 Years Old, so choose wisely! The prices for a beer or a Jameson are absolutely in line with other places around here. They accept both: cash and cards! Still an amazing place!

Amazing little boozer focusing on beers and cocktails. Despite having the appearance of a classic pub, the cocktails do not disappoint in the slightest and the craftsmanship on display is outstanding. Friendly staff. Highly recommended that you give this place a try if you're in the area.

To put it simply… this place is incredible. I had my birthday of 20 guests at this place on a Saturday night 5pm-1am and WOW was I impressed!! I’ve never been so well looked after by the staff at a bar like I was at The Sun Tavern. Firstly, as we were a large group, all staff constantly made sure that we had enough space for all guests to sit. Even at a time when there wasn’t, they moved chairs and candles without prompt to set us up a makeshift sitting area just so everyone could be comfortable. The staff were incredibly lovely to each and every single one of us offering the best table service EVER. It made the night so much more enjoyable as no one had to hover over a crowded bar at any point of the night. It also was a great atmosphere, great music and the music volume + overall volume of the place was not extremely loud which meant that you were never screaming to have a conversation which I feel is always a problem in bars on a Saturday night - it really did add to the night being GREAT. If you’re ever considering having your birthday here - just do it. You honestly won’t regret it!! Thank you to everyone who worked on the 2nd of April and made this night absolutely perfect. You were all amazing!!!

Cosy and intimate bar in Bethnal Green. It's not very big but it goes quite far down, more than first appears when you walk in. The lighting is low and warm which adds to the cosy feeling you get here. The staff here are always very friendly and helpful. It's a sister bar of Discount Suit Company, both are equally great bars and two of my favourites. Listen out for the 'music' in the toilets...
