Happened upon The Heron during a recent Vacation. I'm glad I didn't miss out! The atmosphere was inviting and cozy, with friendly staff and prompt service. I was a bit surprised to find that the menu offered Thai food, however it was excellent and the presentation was lovely. Really, the only gripe I have is that the wine was slightly on the pricey side, but that one negative doesn't out-way the many positive things about this place. I wish we had something here at home that compares, but alas I'll have to hope for a future vacation and another visit.
Nice place, lovely crowd, peaceful customers, but really hot in here..
Was in London recently and happened to visit The Heron...lovely atmosphere, very friendly staff, great selection of beers and spirits and amazing Thai food!!
Amazing pub. Great food, great beers, roaring open fireplace and great company. Not too busy on a Friday night and tucked away from the main drag. Superb!
What's not to like? Cool pub, easy for meeting friends and chatting over (good selection of) drinks.
Lovely pub - very cosy, friendly & full of the character, atmosphere & memorabilia that made The Windsor Castle such a unique & well-loved pub.
Nice quiet location too - just a 5-minute walk from Paddington!
Love it - can't wait to come back :-)
Just to say many many thanks to Bo, Colin & Magda at the Heron for hosting my 50th Birthday on Good Friday ..14th April. I had quite a few friends and family in and the guys catered for us with distinction! Everyone who attended was happy with the service and party food provided! You guys went out of your way to make sure we were all happy which I deeply appreciate! Thanks again for a memorable night! x
Cosy with a real community feel, and unashamedly Monarchist !
Who would have thought that downstairs from a pub, The Heron, that I would come across the best Thai food I have had the opportunity to experience in all of London. The ORANGE curry blew me away.
Ignore the poor service. The food rocks ! The best selection of authentic Thai salads anywhere in London.
Last night I had the best Thai food I have had outside Thailand. That is a big statement I know, but it's true. Tucked underneath a rather shabby looking pub near Edgware Road called the Heron, is a haven of Thai cooking and karaoke!
The brightly coloured dining room / karaoke bar was empty when we arrived... the place had a certain Thai style and I was already starting to warm to it. We ordered a som dtam which is my favourite Thai dish. Fresh, crunchy and warming...
There are many North Eastern salad dishes, which the kitchen here specialises in, many bar nibbles, many soups and sour curries. If you’re familiar with, say, a stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts, a green curry, or even, a pad thai, you won’t find it in this basement!!
I love Thai food: the chillies, the freshness, the wonderful herbs and spices amalgamating in simple but at the same time exceptionally flavoursome dishes. I have been to Thailand on three occasions and have eaten my way back and forth through the Thai menu, in fact I decided then that I could easily live on nothing but Thai food for the rest of my life. Trying to recreate a similar gastronomical experience in London has proved much more difficult than expected. I have tried a plethora of different Thai restaurants in the capital in search for THE one, for my favourite Thai, but even though I found a few cheap Thai places that I quite like, such as Suchard in Bermondsey or Yelo in Hoxton, their food seems rather tuned down and Westernised. I am not even mentioning places like Rosa and Busaba Ethai , which sadly have rather little in common with the cuisine I experienced in Thailand. Another irritating fact is that most Thai places in London have the same generic men
Somewhat foolishly, and prematurely, I decided back in January that 101 Thai Kitchen in Hammersmith was as good as Thai food gets in this country. I don't know what posessed me really - I knew in my heart of hearts that this still wasn't the meal I was looking for, still wasn't anywhere near approaching the fire and flavour of any dish I'd ordered roadside during a month-long trip around Thailand a decade ago. But at the time, 101 was as good as I'd tried and it suited my dwindling prospects of ever finding anything better to use it as an excuse to stop looking. 101 is very good, of course, it's just not quite actual Thai - it's London-friendly Thai, toned-down, lukewarm, safe. The Heron is not any of these things. In fact, the Heron is so unlike any other Thai meal I've ever had in the UK I'm still not entirely convinced the building doesn't conceal some kind of wormhole to Bangkok - I'm distinctly heard the whine of a Tuk Tuk and the swish of a riverboat every time our waitress disap
I was particularly excited to try the sai oua, a smoky Northern Thai pork sausage, as I was looking for a particular sausage I’d had in Chiang Mai. While this one wasn’t exactly the same, it was still delicious with all its chilli and spices and smokiness. Did I mention that chilli? This was probably the hottest dish on the table!
One of my favorite Thai restaurants in London zone1. All dishes tasted authentic. Variety of beers were served. The pub is dog-friendly
As a Thai person, this thai restaurant is one of the most authentic places I could find in London. Highly recommend and its not expensive at all.
Amazing food at a very underated restaurant.
You wouldnt know this place existed browsing online or by recommendation.
Authentic thai cuisine at its best for an affordable price
was really happy to find soft shell crab on the menu :) on Saturday afternoon the pub was not so crowded so could enjoy the meal in a quiet environment. chili flavor might be a bit too spicy, so if you are not confident just go for salt and pepper! and you should add on sticky rice which comes in a cute pot(?). out of the dessert menu, I would recommend pandan pancake cuz the mango was not really ripe as you expect.
Very traditional British looking pub with a Thai restaurant. Very cozy and kind service. The food also was very tasty and at a good price. (My orange curry tasted better than what it looked like)
2020 - Great food and service. The restaurant is in the basement, basic but cozy. The food was fairly authentic and very flavorful with just the perfect amount of spice levels. We finally tried the place after more than 4 years of living in the neighborhood and glad we did as we plan to go back. 😊
2022 - Finally visited again and was pleasantly surprised that there was seating outside in the beer garden which was amazing in the great weather. The food did not disappoint and was amazing, we ordered a variety of things including the starter platter, noodles, salad, a curry dish as well as a stir fry and each dish was better than the other. Thoroughly enjoyed out meal!
Delicious food and lovely staff. Mix up with the bill and charged almost twice as much as I should have paid. They realized and came running after me with the correct bill and cash refund. I had just thought in was a bit pricey! Just got used to London pricing. Really appreciated their honesty. Will definitely go back again and try more of their interesting menu
Very lovely Thai restaurant in a nice location.
The food was delicious. We ordered aromatic crispy duck, prawns Pad Thai and pineapple and prawns fried rice. The dishes were very tasty.
Good quality, quantity and price are good.
We'll be back soon.
I do not give many five stars but this place is a hidden gem. Excellent kept celler, two casks and a real cyder on. Eccentric decoration and nice locals. Dog friendly. Oh plus the water gardens are out the back
Always nice for the foods, new chef and team are hospitality. Pub staffs are also helpful. Football match tonight Netherlands and Mexico was fun in the pub ⚽️
One of the best pubs in the Paddington area that got a good Thai restaurant in their basement. The Thai food for its price point is one of the nicest I had in a long time with no dish being a disappointment. Every item was cooked to perfection as and seasoned perfectly. The best part is that the prices are hard to beat.
I will always go to Heron and its pub anytime for the great food and drinks if I am in the mood. The pub staff is very friendly as ND they also got great ambience with their quirky decorations that add a lot of character to the establishment. Whether it is to come in for a quick pint and snack or for a whole dinner, Heron is a good place to be.
What a great pub. The very definition of a hidden gem.
Tourists will love it too. Royal memorabilia adorns every spare inch and you could spend an afternoon browsing it all.
An outside garden and conservatory allow a drink or meal when the weather is nice
Good range of lagers but sadly, on my visit, only Greene King ale. That would normally be enough to dock a point but the unique pub atmosphere and friendly staff and locals would make that harsh.
Add in some really good (and great value) Thai food and we have a winner.
The sort of place I'd like to keep hidden, but that's not the point eh?
Can't wait to return.
Phenomenal combination of a traditional English pub with great authentic Thai food (yes, Thai people running the kitchen!). Definitely worth a visit.
Great classic English Pub with Thai food on the menu. A very enjoyable, non-pretentious atmosphere that’s welcoming and laid back. The Thai food is great! If you’re in the Marble Arch area, it’s The Churchill Arms but without the walk! Highly recommend.
A great find,a proper pub that's not been gutted, full of character. The food is Thai and was really tasty and well presented at really great prices, staff were so friendly and had a bit of banter, beer selection was varied and well kept.
Food is tasty wish the portions were bigger though
TV screens are not synched for sound so one side of pub knows what will happen before the other side which keeps me away from watching football there more regularly
One suggestion is just to pause the action on one of the screens for a few seconds and then that problem will be resolved
Saying that it is a really homely pub with friendly staff
A great variety of food, and every dish we ordered there was a top notch.
The service is very good. The only "problem" is that the restaurant and the bar are like two different services, so it is sometimes strange (like having to go up to the bar to order beer), but each service was 5star by itself.
The fried squids and crispy tentacles were amazing appetisers. They were so tasty, and really fun to eat.
Each of the duck dishes we tried was amazing! Shout out for the duck tongues. Fat and tasty.
They have an awesome desset of sweet rice and mango. It might sound a bit boring, but it is actually one of the most fun deserts I had in a while. Simple but tasty <3
