“A great authentic selection of Veg and Non-Veg menu with excellent service”

Date of Visit: 18.01.18
Time: 12.30pm

Review: Upper Street has one restaurant after another so you can easily get confused where to eat and you may not venture from one end to the other but i do recommend you plan and stick to your plan as we did else we would have not walked this far down (towards Highbury from Angle Tube) and would have walked past the small entrance no doubt and missed out on this little treasure. There are also special lunch deals which are very well grouped options and worth looking at. Menu selection is great with many options but not to the point you cant decide and also would then question the quality on offer. A good selection of starters, mains and desserts. Food all arrived promptly and hot and all well presented. I tried all the dishes and each had an authentic and different taste and enjoyed each one from the starters to the main to the dessert. Also having a selection of both veg and non-veg all great with no complaints. This is not supposed to be fine dinning or a fusion resturant but its one i would visit again as you know you and anyone you take with you will be happy and full.

Dress Code: No dress code and a nice place to visit for family meal or with friends.

Booking Process: You are able to book a table on-line very easy process and you get a confirmation email which all worked well.

Location: 119 Upper Street, London N1 1QP

Cuisine type: Thai food

Parking: There is off street parking but no dedicated car park

Decor & Lighting: We sat by the window but there is a rear part to the restaurant also flooded with light from a glass atrium and although the resturant starts narrow it really has considerable space further down. There is also some nice accent lighting and good comfortable seating with various seating options available to meet any size party.

Heating & Cooling: I noted a few AC units which i assume also had heat pumps and we went the temperature was cold outside but comfortable inside.

Ambience & Acoustics: Light background music and simple decor, i would say the walls could do with some work to add some more ambience but overall a nice place and clean. Acoustics seemed to be good but as we went when it was empty it would be unfair to really comment too much about noise levels.

DB Level: I did not take a reading as we were the only people in the restaurant at the time so would not be relevant

Drinks: There was a good selection of drinks with various teas and other fresh juices and a couple of cocktails on offer but no non-alcoholic selection but all you would expect and a little more available so there was no real issue.

We had the following:

Starters

Corn fritters with sweet chilli dressing - Comes with two good sized fritters, a bit on the sticky side for the teeth but great taste and not overly spicy and a great starter with the sweet chilli dressing also a good complimentary sauce.

Spicy chicken and dill soup - A great fresh and spicy tasting broth with good amount of chicken.A big bowl for a starter.

Vegetable spring roll - Mini spring rolls and little on the greasy side but all forgiven for the great taste and i could have eaten so many more of these.

Vegetable thom yum - A great soup with plenty of vegatibiles and spicy slightly sweet broth. A big bowl for a starter.

Main Course

Vegetable green curry with Thai aubergine, tofu, bamboo shoot and sweet basil - A good sized portion again a nice spicy tasting broth with good consistency of sauce and serve with rice. We asked for this without tofu.

Chicken stir fry with cashew nut - Served in a large bowl with plenty of spicy crispy chicken pieces so if you love crispy spicy chicken you will love this but not served with any noddles or rice so worth maybe ordering something to accompany this dish.

Phad mee, egg noodle with chicken, prawn, shiitake and beansprout - A good sized portion of egg noodles and chicken, which is similar to the stir fry but not as crispy. Very nice dish with plenty of flavour but a milder option than the others.

Desert

Warm raspberry and chocolate pudding with vanilla ice cream - Small but very hot raspberry and chocolate pudding but still a good size for dessert and not overly rich in taste with light raspberry taste so not overpowering. A nice vanilla ice cream that complimented the dessert well. A great end to the meal .

Lemon cheesecake with strawberry ice cream - A light refreshing lemon cheesecake and fresh strawberry ice cream. Portion is not too big or too small and you can order two dishes and easily share each as i would recommend.

Bill / Cost: Around £50-60 for three people which i found extremely reasonable given the portion size and quality of food.

Conclusion: Menu selection and service was excellent with great friendly staff who were also very attentive. Given we went at a day and time it was empty so i cannot comment on a day with more covers but i would still highly recommend a visit for both people who are vegetarian and non-vegetarian. If you are heading to Islington Upper Street is a wave of one restaurant after another but please do venture down and pop into this place as you won’t be disappointed. All the dishes went back empty and we only needed one meal for the entire day as filled us all up for the rest of the day ahead.

Really on point restaurant: great design, lovely customer treatment and of course excellent Thai food. Had the lunchbox which I found quite original and perfect for a quick business lunch.
Do recommend it!

Ordered a watermelon juice which tasted really old, considering it was the hottest day of the year we can give them some space. Waiter JJ who was excellent, immediately changed it for some Orange juice which tasted nice, normal orange juice nothing wow or different.

Went straight for main course,

Ordered Prawn red curry, fried red snapper fish in a chilli sauce, coconut sticky rice.

Fried red snapper was not impressive at all. A 1/5 rating, not impressed.

The prawn red curry was great, a 4/5. Flavour was awesome, thick gravy and delicious prawns. Could have had some vegetables in the dish though and perhaps more gravy.

Coconut rice was nice, average...nothing wow. 4/5

Gave us 2 portions of prawn crackers which was great! Normally £2 per portion.

After a nice dinner, more than enough for 2. We had desert

A scoop of coconut ice cream which was a great 4/5! Amazingly creamy and delicious. Savoured each moment, could have been a little bigger portion to get 5/5.

Bill for 2 including drinks, deserts and main course was £35,00. £17.50pp is pretty decent.

So,

Drinks: 1/5
Main course: 3/5
Desert: 4/5
Service: 5/5
Price: 4/5

Overall: 4/5

Went here especially as they did not do a valentines menu, food was good. Maybe a bit too many fresh chillies scattered about. The swordfish was great, the dessert fritters were too oily. So mixed, would try different things next time as the venue was great

The SuperfoodieUK NEEDED Thai food at 5pm on a Sunday in not so familiar territory so draw a circle on Zomato, filter for Thai cuisine and off we go to the top hit.  Super efficient!  We'd been to Isarn a long while ago in fact so looking forward to coming back.  In order for SuperfoodieUK to not make any complicated decisions such as Vegetable Green Curry OR Pad Thai Jay we ordered both and I sneaked in a bit of duck in my starter!  On asking the the curry was spicy, the waitress responded "yes it's very spicy and it needs to be! We can make it a little less spicy if you'd like though... ".  My eyes had light up in the background and secretly I was hoping the SuperfoodieUK would say "no just serve it as it comes"!

However my sneaky order of Crispy Duck on Betel Leaves didn't actually get me much duck or betel leaf for that matter.  They seemed to have transformed into gem lettuce by the time they reached my plate.  Tasted ok if rather on the sweet side.  The Green Curry was the star for me though.  It was aromatic, rich and had a proper kick to it (I'm guessing they forgot to tone it down... hehe).  Pad Thai Jay was equally good and they were happy to serve us some extra limes and Pik Nam Pla (without me having to explain what it was or why I can't say it correctly! bonus!).

Highly recommended is also the sticky coconut rice.  It's fantastic, you can almost eat it on its own and it doesn't fall into the trap of being served on the sweet side.  Look forward to coming back here.  Miso sneaky!

The ambiance was pretty cool (although I don't get the cowhide chairs in a Thai restaurant). But kudos for trying. The food was delicious from beginning to end ... Loved the crispy fried chicken with sour green mango and hot chilis. The crispy snap peas with baby corn covered in a brown gravy was yummy and balanced the spicy chicken dish.

Isarn is curiously located on a rather uncharted part of Upper Street, a little further north than the clustering of restaurants towards Angel and a little further south than the clustering around the Almeida Theatre, resulting in a rather quiet dinner service despite having read great reviews. Well, it’s your loss, more food for me!

A local favourite. However, over the past months, both food and service have slightly diminished in quality. Still certainly worth a visit and we sincerely hope that they pull up their socks a little. Used to be one of the best Thai restaurants in London.

I love Isarn! Part of the family Yau's businesses, the atmosphere, food, drinks are all great. A bit pricey and service can be inconsistent sadly.

Just waiting for the train home after a meal at isarn. Tiny venue with trendy decor, the place appeared a little flustered and disorganized to start with. We had the rasberry and strawberry bellinis to open and were very pleased with the drink. To start we had the mixed starter of satay, fish cakes, duck shreadded on betel leaf and papaya spring rolls. They were fragrent, delicious, fresh as daisies and beautifully presented. Great start. We then had a soup, firey, flavoursome and fantastic. However, the main course dissapointed, average Thai curries despite choosing the monk fish green and duck red. Tasty, yes, but not much to rave about. Would go again on a grazing night for the starters and soup but would not rush back for main. Would describe the place as cramped rather than cozy. Staff friendly, attentive but manic. Liked it but NOT the best restaurant in Islington.

I love your rich massaman curry and your eye-wateringly spicy seafood soup and your tender chicken satay with the amazing peanut sauce that I have to resist spooning directly into my mouth. I love your tangy lime juice soda with the pretty magenta flower and your light-filled dining room and the fact that you serve brown jasmine rice heaped in ornate silver bowls.

After researching a few options for dinner in Angel, I decided to go with Isarn, a trendy-looking Thai place on Upper Street. The menu has quite few options, and many of these are under £13 for a main course plus rice. Mussel yellow curry with mangosteen

Issarn has a nice ambiance, it's a more elegant option for Thai food in this area. The restaurant is not that big but it is rectangular and stretches out in the back. This works for this place because it makes you feel like you have a little more privacy and you're not looking at too many other tables but just the one next to you.

The food was good but the portions were quite small. The small portions are nice because that way you can try a bunch of things out but at the same time the portions here were a bit pricey.

Unassuming from the outside, this Thai restaurant on Upper Street in Angel is a real gem inside. With a smart, mood lit interior and even an outside space at the back, this is perfect for an intimate meal and the food doesn't disappoint either. The curry and soup had the perfect balance of coconut and cream, flavour and consistency. The portions aren't the biggest, but the quality makes up for it and at about £12 per main dish its great value. For any Thai fans, this is the best I've had in London so far. Highly recommended.

Having spent a long time in Thailand I've been finding it very hard to find good Thai food here in London. The staff members were all Thai and service was great. I recommend the mix starter for two, it was fantastic! The food was lovely, I'll definitely go again.

Amazing Thai food with a great range of dishes at a very reasonable price. The pan fried silken tofu steak is brilliant.
Whilst it seems an unlikely place, this restaurant makes the best chocolate pudding I've ever tasted! True gem

In a few words, one of the best Thai restaurants I have been to in London. It's not as cheap as Kaosarn in Brixton, but given the location Isarn is definitely one of the best options when it comes to Thai food.

The ambiance is nothing amazing, a long narrow room with tables on both sides, although the white-and-wood decor was ultimately pleasant. Service is attentive as in most good Asian restaurants and they were happy to serve us even if the kitchen was about to close, although they came to ask if we enjoyed our curries one too many times.

Speaking of curries, food is the star here. We started with a classic Tom Yum soup and a rather more exotic crispy duck in betel leaf, and they both lived up to the expectations. The soup was deeply flavoured and fiercely spiced, with a few juicy prawns swimming in it, and the duck with pomelo and betel leaf was a new but interesting flavour.

As main we ordered a beautiful yellow chicken curry and a chilli and lime grilled pork, accompanied by sticky coconut rice. The curry was amazing, creamy and flavoursome with nice chunks of tender chicken in it, and the sticky rice was, well, sticky, but proved itself to be the perfect match. The pork was delicious as well, although I'd have rather had a second serving of curry after having tried it. We finished the meal with a refreshing mango sorbet.

Costing around £20 per person with a starter and a main each, and a beer to share, Isarn is just marginally more expensive than popular choices such as Busaba, and definitely worth the extra few pounds.

Easy to miss, this place! Gotta remember it's opposite St. Mary's Church. You enter into a long corridor like room with nice lighting & decor. Food is great and very reasonably priced. A very relaxed place. Went there with my girl friends recently and we sat there for a good two hours talking and even if it was a late booking, we did not feel rushed. The staff let us be which was nice.

Amazing starter thai calamari and curries. The mango sticky rice was not that great though. The coconut milk sauce was too salty, overwhelming the taste of the desert.

Slightly over-priced, not very authentic l, but nothing wrong with adapting to Western taste. Really liked this chicken with house special dressing, and sticker rice mango pudding. But if you want authentic Thai curry, I’d advise to go somewhere else. Average cost is about £30 - £35 per person.

The place next door and this are linked lovely exposed outdoor indoor area got some Greek starters and then the vegetable curry and some spring rolls , considering it was a starter side and mean and wondering I found it a bit pricey but I can understand with that atmosphere, be warned this is not the place for a quiet date night

Fantastic! Our host was friendly and really accommodating, thank you very much for making us feel relaxed and welcome. Especially concerning our food allergies. Food was amazing. I’m from Thailand and can say that this was a great modern take on traditional Thai dishes. Wide range of dishes and nice atmosphere. 👍

The starters are amazing. The chicken mango was also delicious and I highly recommend the rice with coconut. However, I was disappointed because the member of the staff who served us did not know the menu. I wanted something with a lot of vegetables but ended up with a lot of fried noodles with a few vegetables (although it was very good).

Food was reasonably priced. Had to mixed entree, enjoyable. Had the duck curry was nice but very heavy on the coconut milk, would have been nice to have some greens in the curry. Thai ice tea was extremely sweet, don't bother unless u like it very sweet.
