Friendly, welcoming staff - fresh, tasteful food. Simple and effective!
As always was very good. This time popped in for brunch, food and service were excellent. Lucky to have this as a neighbourhood restaurant.
Dining al fresco under the heaters, it was not a case of out of sight out of mind, as staff very attentive and friendly. Food excellent, so looking forward to repeating the experience.
Superb service; delicious food; exquisite ambience; excellent pricing - perfect recipe for a memorable evening.
Service was fantastic, relaxed dining and the chicken for two was perfect
My favourite local restaurant - great food & service - very friendly - highly recommend.
Went for Sunday Lunch and what a pleasant experience it was. Warm atmosphere, lovely staff who clearly care about the restaurant and its customers and great food. Will definitely go there again.
A lovely meal - interesting menu but also uncomplicated. Well executed. The service was friendly and helpful. No complaints whatsoever - we will definitely be back!
Delightfully presented cute modern bistro. Came for brunch and had the English fry up which I can certainly recommend. Coffee was beautiful which is a rarity in London. Only thing is the price - £22 per person for brunch is a bit steep considering the portion sizes.
Four days in and a gratefully received invitation to review led me to Bistro Union. And what a lovely neighbourhood restaurant this is, located on the beautiful Abbeville Road serving good quality British food. This Bistro was created by Adam Byatt and the team behind The Trinity, another Clapham based restaurant. I’ve not visited Trinity but from what I’ve read Bistro Union seems to be the laid back relation in atmosphere and price whilst the quality and seasonality of ingredients are values they both share.
...the dishes are simple and let the ingredients speak for themselves. We started with brown shrimp, monk’s beard and boiled potatoes (£7) – the shrimps were meaty, and were complemented by the fresh, crunchy monk’s beard. The cooking of the potatoes was good and they added bulk to the dish. Our second starter was pheasant, blood orange and watercress (£7) – this was light and summery, the bittersweet blood orange paired well with the soft, beautifully pink pheasant. Feeling both hungry and brave, for main course we chose the whole beef rib (£44 for two to share) which came with Bearnaise sauce and thick cut chips. As you can see from the photograph below this was an impressive piece of meat (easily over a kilo). The rib had been cooked on the bone so the meat was very moist, the fat was crispy and melt in the mouth; the cooking was consistently medium-rare across the whole rib. The quality of the beef was very good and I think on par with my recent steak at Hawksmoor – the chips were double or triple cooked, so nicely crispy, and the Bearnaise had a good consistency. My only gripe was that we would have liked a few more chips to complement our hunk of meat.
... the latest restaurant from Saturday Kitchen regular Adam Byatt. A relaxed Bistro environment, the restaurant is quite small and busy providing it with a good atmosphere without feeling overcrowded...Bistro Union was a really good example of 'modern British' cooking. It wasn't like pub grub but then the classics also hadn't been messed with so much that they're unrecognisable. Every dish was a really good up to date and fresh example of good British classics, fresh enough to elevate it above the 'same old' but recognisable enough to relish in the comfort food factor...One of the stand out points of the evening was the service.
The other half and I had a lovely dinner with our friends Sian and Jason at current foodies' favourite Bistro Union in Clapham last weekend. The buzz around this place has been considerable and the reviews good, so my expectations were high. Abbeville Road is Sian and J's hood and so we have spent quite a bit of time there visiting them - it's a cute local street with some pretty chi-chi shops but up until now I hadn't had an amazing dining experience there. That changed on Saturday night. Adam Byatt will be known to fans of Thyme and more recently Trinity (where he still cooks) and with Bistro Union he has opened another gem. It definitely feels very "now" (as in, there are elements of Russell Norman, Duck Soup etc, there are lots of small sharing plates, it's a little rough 'n ready...) but that's fine with me, as I love the stripped back, focus on the food, small plate, street-foodish vibe. I could have eaten a LOT from this menu. We started by sharing several small plate
My parents and I were mightily impressed by a recent meal at Adam Byatt's Trinity in Clapham Old Town (still dreaming of 14 year fermented sourdough, and the Valrhona chocolate pot). Clapham locals Chris & Guy also rated his more relaxed Bistro Union rather highly, and we only lasted 3 weeks before ticking it off too.
I've mentioned Abbeville Road before after a visit to Kerbisher & Malt, but I must stress again what a hidden gem it is. Abbeville Kitchen, Bottle Apostle & Brew Testament, and Ginger Pig are just some of the delights this tiny stretch of road has to offer. And Bistro Union is my favourite stop so far...
Turning down outside tables and counter service at the bar, we settled in the colourful and well-lit dining area, within sight of the eye-catching snacks board, which rolls down the wall like a hand towel.
Bistro Union's "snacks" double as small starters, though there was nothing down-sized about our Broccoli & Stichelton Bake (a steal at £4) or the Salt Cod Fritters with Aioli (£5). Keeping pace with those excellent little plates was Gem, Peashoots, Buttermilk & Toasted Crumb (£4). London's buttermilk obsession shows no sign of slowing down, which doesn't bother me in the slightest.
You could just stick to this menu if you were after a speedy lunch as there's so much variety (including a small dessert option), and the addition of a Daily Sandwich makes it clear that they welcome locals in for no more than a quick bite to eat.
After several snacks, we skipped past the starters (which are in danger of being overlooked), and moved on to the Bistro Union Staples and Weekly Specials a.k.a. mains.
Classy, nostalgic comfort food is the order of the day here with mac'n'cheese, fish pie and toad in the hole on the menu. Dad gave the thumbs up to Smoked Haddock, Creamed Corn and Homemade Sausage (£16) whilst I wolfed down a Salt Beef Hash with Fried Egg and Pickled Cucumbers (£12), which was more of a brunch dish and just what I needed.
To finish, I chose well with Banana Custard (£5) - a banoffee-style pot of gooey goodness without the biscuit base. Dad's Plum and Hazelnut Frangipane Tart (£6) disappeared without a trace.
No frills, no fuss - it was a fabulous filling lunch that didn't break the bank. Service was charming throughout, and there's plenty more on the menu for return visits.
The weekend brunch is apparently pretty special, and Sunday evening supperclubs look fun, with no corkage BYOB and free meals for kids under 10. I also like the sound of private booze lockers behind the bar - once your alcohol is stored away, you can make use of it with free mixers whenever you rock up. If you ask nicely, you might even get a Martini or two shaken for you.
Fingers crossed Adam Byatt gets itchy feet and sets up shop in Battersea next, or I might have to think about moving closer to his restaurants to minimise wasted journey time!
Bistro Union represents something great, something unique to our little isle. Quintessential British; realness and honesty. Pride in simplicity and integrity of food. I refrain from comparing it to canteen food because it is not, it is better than that though I am sure that the managers would welcome the comparison in some senses. High end canteen food, plated, is not quite right but it certainly captures a portion of Bistro Union’s essence. In my opinion it is most spectacular in its Brit Tapas, whoops I meant ‘bar snacks’. They really are great and, at from 2-6 pounds per plate, more than a moderate bargain. I will go to Bistro Union repeatedly and often for carafes of wine and these small plates of moreish, British grub.

We had a fantastic three course meal for a very reasonable price. The wine list was extensive, and the service was outstanding. We will be comming back to try out the new menus.
Bistro Union had a good vegetarian range in their 3 course option.
Andy Lambert take a bow! Fantastic eve at Bistro Union. Exciting menu, delicious food.. excellent service. Well done Adam and Andy.. we will return! P.S the Comte Gougeres are to die for 😮💨
We went to Bistro Union for a birthday celebration and we had an amazing time! Staff was very friendly and even prepared a birthday card for our arrival. It was a lovely overall experience!
We had a lovely lunch. The place and the playlist are really relaxing.
I have a nuts allergy and the staff took a really good care of me. Thank you very much.

Fantastic evening. Fresh delicious food and lovely service too. Couldn't fault it and the duck special was a brilliant idea. I was surprised that this was my first visit here..but I'll definitely be back.
Brilliant wine choices to compliment as well.
Fantastic three course meal from set menu for reasonable price. The waiting staff were very attentive, the food was delicious (especially the white onion soup) and the decor was cosy and warm. Will be returning.
This is a great little place for either breakfast or dinner. The breakfast comes in a frying pan which is a nice touch and you have the option to build your own. We have been here for birthdays and anniversary’s and the most recent for Valentine’s Day. The food was delicious and it’s great to have staff who can recommend wines to go with the meal. We have always enjoyed coming here and will be back again soon!
The moment you walk through the door, it's a warm and pleasant welcome. The staff are smiling and open body language and it's great. When you are seated it's a lovely style with copper and brass fixtures and fittings. The food well that's where it becomes better. The staff make personal options not specials. We had the asparagus and squid to start and it was bursting of flavour. The mains were mother staring the Steak and the crab is what we went for. It melted in your mouth. We then managed to squeeze in some deserts and this was the part I didn't expect. We have desert wine and I choose the gooseberry mess and my friend had the panacotta. The flavours and the wine where like an explosion of flavours and didn't want it to end. The staff are an asset to the establishment. I will be coming back that's for sure. The white wine was also delicious.
Went for a birthday dinner last night and really enjoyed bistro union.
3 courses for £35 was great value for really delicious food. We had the ox cheek for two people for main course which was fantastic. Service was great too.
[Understood to be a sister restaurant to Trinity restaurant] Rustic deco design. Nice quirk on bar having under table draws to stash cutlery. Very attentive service. Tasty crusty bread. Coarse salt on table. Liked the starter squid fried with light batter. Main steak with two eggs on top (perfectly fried). Great lunch place with tables outside.
