Great food & Great service. Was there for brunch and a good choice of dishes to pick. Coffee was really good too would definitely recommend this place
Best flat white coffee I have had for a while ! Delicious lunch - generous portion without overloading- enough room for salted caramel brownie ! Staff were happy and attentive!
Under no circumstances go for the (brilliant) breakfast at Brother Marcus on a Saturday or Sunday morning - you'll be much happier, and feel much more "British" joining the queue at either Brickwood or Milk round the corner
.........and then I won't have to queue at all at Balham's number one breakfast hang out next time either
Brother Marcus is a slice of shoreditch in south London. The good bit, that is. This place is the antitheses of corporate coffee shop consumerism. It has individual charm, character and the staff aint bad too.
A stunning breakfast! I had the sister special... it was like a party in my mouth with everyone invited. The eggs were on point.
Love the staff, service and atmosphere. Food is amazing and coffee on point. My favourite coffee shop!
The coffee here is life affirming. From the tip of my tongue that first sip cascaded downward over my tastebuds in their millions, bathing each one individually in the full majesty of being alive that we so easily forget as we tussle through life's everyday triviality, that we otherwise only glimpse as it recedes from the world, amongst the blurred overlap of golden light flickering on the horizon as the sun sets over a glittering ocean. And I swallowed and then repeated the whole experience all over again and it was even more amazing.
Best staff, best coffee, best food.... in the world
Brother Marcus is a great place to meet up. Coffee and food fantastic and the personnel is second to none. Had the pleasure of attending a private function recently - the perfect venue for such an event. Would recommend you check it out .
Great little cafe a stone throw from Balham station. Great attentive staff and yummy breakfasts! I particularly loved the "miss Robinson" cocktail
Best place in Balham for amazing coffee, food and the nicest staff who make you feel like you are part of the family! Never change guys, you are the best!
Very fortunate to have this place on my doorstep, it's not often a coffee shop ticks all the boxes (quality of coffee, food, service etc) but brother marcus seems to have smashed it. Service is great and we are always made to feel welcome. They obviously did their homework before opening and deserve the all the success they seem to be enjoying.
Delicious Sister Special breakfast. Sourdough toast with avocado, spinach, watercress, crispy maple bacong and topped with poached egg. Mmmm
What a find. Fab place and you must try the Sugar Daddy as it was so yummy. Thank you.
Friendly service, cool simple decor, yummy food and generous sized pot of well blended Earl Grey tea. Really welcome addition to Balham set up by a young, keen team. Oh and they have a sun trap garden out back!
Fantastic food and service. Great place to meet and chill. Highly recomended.
Loved the pork belly sriacha pitta for brunch !! And great vibes
Best brunch in town. No doubt!! If you haven't been yet, you have to go!!
London has plenty of great eateries, so it was a difficult decision to end up in the excellent Brother Marcus. It doesn’t look like much from the street, but once you are inside, this place just looks and feels like somewhere you want to spend a lot of time. I visited for brunch with a friend and we were ready to eat!
Not ones to skimp on the food, my friend and I ordered a few things off the menu that we would share and then waited with baited breath. The first thing we saw on the menu and both pointed at was the Brother Special. This is scrambled eggs, chard, asparagus and beetroot cured salmon and toast with rocket oil. Talk about tasty. And cooked to perfection.
We also both liked the sound of the Step Sister. The combination of sweet potato, courgette and feta fritters, with avocado and spinach, kale, turmeric yogurt topped with a poached egg had us both fighting forks to get the last mouthfuls. This worked really well with the grilled aubergine with chilli, beetroot hummus and sesame seeds and halloumi with sliced orange and crumbled pistachios, which were both brought out (like everything else) with a huge smile from the attentive staff. We threw in a pork belly with Parmesan and tomato relish just to make the meal complete and left really happy people.
The place is just great. Down to earth, but serving amazing food. Brother Marcus is the ideal place to visit if you are ever in London SW12.
Brother Marcus is a small food venue with a relatively small menu. Hold that thought right there and don’t let it progress before I say that size isn’t everything! Bear in mind that this year’s annual Michelin star awards now include street food vendors. The quality of what you produce is really the only important thing for a food establishment to keep top of mind. The guys at Brother Marcus certainly have, and the results are impressive!
Balham has recently garnered our attention due the to the heavily recommended Milk Cafe (full review here). We’ve been back numerous times dragging different people along and all have left promising to be back again soon. I got wind of a new opening – Brother Marcus that just opened its doors the past weekend. Situated in the perfect position right next to the Underground and the Soho House pairing of Dirty Burger and Chicken Shop – this could end up being one street that will be able to feed you decently no matter what time of the day.
I seldom venture down to South London. Yes I hang out in London Bridge but weirdly I don’t consider that to be true South London as its quite central. Anyway, heading down there for some business I decided to go a little earlier, just so I could find a cafe and prep. It was a lovely sunny day without the promise of rain and Balham ended up looking truly gorgeous.

Having come out of the station, I was not struck by lightening, I did not have to go through passport control (lol) or have any prior injections to protect me from southisis. I know, it may sound ridiculous to most, but us North of the river types do have strong opinions on the sarf, from your lack of tube stations to decent shopping meccas. Above the river we have Westfields, well two actually. Then there is Knightsbridge, Oxford Street, Bond Street and Regent Street etc. You have Bluewater or perhaps I am just not educated enough about what is on offer down here. Well on this day, an important reason brought me down to Balham and a fantastic find made it a wee bit worth it.
Now my East London digs affords me the close proximity to all the cool and hipster places in Hoxton, Shoreditch and even Bethnal Green these days. What I did not expect to find is some strong competition from Balham. Over loads of instagram posts from East London hipsters there is poached eggs and avocado galore. The rest of London has either caught up or I just didn’t have a clue. Breakfast is not a boring affair, it hasn’t been for a long time. Gone are the full English choices or lack lustre veggie option. Interesting items like Eggs Benedict were not always a feature, as its quite tricky to make and get that sauce right. Somehow breakfast is now as cool as the coffee movement, the burger fad and kale brigade. Brother Marcus has embraced this within a delightful space which feels unfinished. I don’t mean as in its falling apart, but just in a minimalist, clean, raw way. The interior is basic and practical. Thank you, as that is all that is needed.
Straightaway you know this is a comfortable environment by the number of tables for one. People comfortably sit on their own, watching the world go by or furiously typing on macbooks. I was greeted by a friendly guy and served by a combination of him and other friendly types. The vibe is chilled, but not to the point of feeling unattended to. They watch the room like hawks, even when they are engaged in banter with their colleagues.
I ordered poached eggs with avocado and crispy bacon on sour dough bread. I had English breakfast tea which was fresh leaves as opposed to tea bags. I loved the food, I loved my tea, I loved the staff, I loved the place. I cannot fully commit to being a Sarf London convert yet, but this places shows there is promise. I may have to cast my net wider in future when planning eating spots to review.
We had a main and a coffee for about £20 each which is a bit costly for brunch but the food was nice and locally sourced which is great. The coffee was good but was not very hot when it was served up.
I found the staff to be a little odd. The service was quite slow and it felt a bit like it was an inconvenience for them to serve us.
I enjoyed the atmosphere, they had some lovely plants inside and a charming garden under cover out the back.
I would return as there were a couple of other things on the menu I would like to try but I would recommend other brunch places to people before going here!
A great place for an evening meal in Balham. The food is exceptional and challenges the great Honey and Co for best knafeh-like cheesecake. The outdoor seating is rain proof and there's heaters if it's particularly cold. We had the Marcus Choice option where you let the kitchen decide on what dishes you receive which is fantastic value at 30 pounds. As amazing as the food and atmosphere are a special mention must go to the serving staff who are chatty and enthusiastic about the food and wine (thanks for the Te Mania tip!) and really made our visit stand out. We'll absolutely be going back.
I came here for brunch last Sunday in a small group, I had booked a table in advance, and I would strongly advise doing so if you plan on visiting for weekend brunch as we saw many groups turned away while waiting for our table. We were seated in the covered outside area which was warm and pleasant in spite of the drizzly weather.
The food was, for the most part, very good. I had shakshuka with added bacon while others opted for different options (we also ordered some sides/extras to share). The shakshuka was divine with the eggs rich and perfectly cooked and the sauce packed with flavour, the added bacon was beautifully crisp without being overdone. There was a good amount of bread to dip in the sauce, although it could have been a little softer. The sides I tried were the hash browns which came in a delicious sauce, but were unfortunately burnt, and also the manouri cheese with honey which, while delicious, was a very thin slice of cheese - not worth by the £4 price tag. To drink, I had a coffee which was nice and well presented, as well as a mint tea later on, unfortunately that simply comprised a few mint leaves in a pot of boiling water with no sugar etc. - bit of a rip off for £2.50!
Overall everyone in the group enjoyed the meal and said it was delicious, and I would largely agree - however it doesn't quite get five stars because it was slightly by a few of the smaller items. It is on the pricier side and some items don't quite justify their price (e.g. the manouri cheese slice) but for a special occasion or a treat it's worth it on the whole. I would definitely come here again, but would probably just stick to the main options. Is it the best brunch in Balham as claimed on the website? I don't think it quite beats Milk... but it certainly has the potential to!
Delicious food. Mine was very good. Enjoyed the Mediterranean palette of flavours.
Only comment would be that the server wasn’t wearing their mask properly. As someone who doesn’t need to wear a mask at all (due to exemption) this doesn’t bother me. However other patrons may notice it.
I would say it’s one of the best brunch places south of the river. There’s always a 10-15 minute queue but upon entering this cozy cafe you will be rewarded with exceptional breakfast. Try Step Sister which is their sweet potato fritter with the most perfect poached egg or go for Brother Special which is beetroot cured salmon with delicious and crunchy sesame glazed broccoli. Finally don’t forget to order a Sugar Daddy which is cinnamon french toasted crumpets with caramelised banana. Another plus is the coffee which is also top draw.
Food & Service - Incredible, Price & Atmosphere - Not the best but ok. Overall a lovely local! The taster menu (Marcus’ recommends) was delicious. Highlights were the cauliflower (who knew?) and the belly pork in a white sauce with walnut and honey; the flavours were well balanced and everything was cooked to absolute perfection. Service was polite, professional and genuine, thank you! The music was weird as they kept skipping tracks between Queens greatest hits and other songs songs but was still fun, especially after some wine. The main feature lights were off at night, even though it was getting dark outside so it felt a bit odd, like the power had gone. The last thing I would say is I felt the prices were slightly high, but I’m probably a tight****!

Gorgeous interior, cozy and inviting. Spans all the way back so plenty of seating. The back can get quite loud with conversations though. The food was of high quality, bonus that the suzuk and chicken are halal. The best thing on the menu is the Turkish platter, everything was great. Bit expensive and Bill was on the high side but fresh, top ingredients. Would recommend and definitely plan on coming back. Waiters extremely helpful and friendly too.
I was attracted by their supper club, and was impressive by their funny dish names. Would you like to have Step Sister or Sugar Daddy?

Super cute brunch place tucked behind Balham high street - would highly recommend if around south london and even if not, it is worth the travel. Creative & unique menu, really fantastic flavour and hearty coffee (not too strong). French toast crumpets w/ fried banana ft. vanilla yoghurt was epic!
